Седети names the state of being seated; сести names the transition into that state. English sit can express either, but Serbian normally asks whether someone is already seated or takes a seat: седим “I am sitting” versus седнем “I sit down.”
State, transition, and repeated transition
The change-of-state network has a third useful member, седати, for repeated or developing acts of sitting down. It is not a replacement for the state седети.
| Meaning | Present | l-participle | Imperative | Future I |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| седети “be sitting” (impf.) | седим, седиш, седи, седимо, седите, седе | седео, седела, седело; седели, седеле, седела | седи, седимо, седите | седећу, седећеш, седеће, седећемо, седећете, седеће |
| седати “sit down repeatedly” (impf.) | седам, седаш, седа, седамо, седате, седају | седао, седала, седало; седали, седале, седала | седај, седајмо, седајте | седаћу, седаћеш, седаће, седаћемо, седаћете, седаће |
| сести “sit down” (pf.) | седнем, седнеш, седне, седнемо, седнете, седну | сео, села, село; сели, селе, села | седи / седни, седимо / седнимо, седите / седните | сешћу, сешћеш, сешће, сешћемо, сешћете, сешће |
Седим близу прозора јер ми је ту светлије.
I sit near the window because it is brighter there.
Села је на крај клупе и направила ми места.
She sat down at the end of the bench and made room for me.
На овој станици путници стално седају у погрешан аутобус.
At this stop, passengers keep getting onto the wrong bus.
The first example describes a stable posture. The second selects one completed transition. The third presents repeated boarding literally as repeated sitting/settling into a vehicle.
The forms hide several stem changes
The infinitives do not predict седнем or masculine сео. Memorize the perfective chain сести — седнем — сео/села — седни — сешћу.
Кад седнем за рачунар, прво проверим календар.
When I sit down at the computer, I first check my calendar.
Perfective седнем is morphologically present but normally refers to one bounded transition in a future, conditional, or habitual sequence. It does not mean “I am sitting now.”
Commands deserve a nuance. Perfective сести has both the common forms седи, седимо, седите and the unambiguous седни, седнимо, седните. The first set is identical in writing to the imperative of state verb седети, so context decides whether седи means “sit down” or “remain seated.” The forms with -н- make the transition explicit.
Седните, молим вас; доктор ће вас примити за неколико минута.
Please take a seat; the doctor will see you in a few minutes. (polite)
Седи мирно док ти не ставим завој.
Sit still while I put the bandage on you. (informal)
The first invitation uses perfective plural/polite седните. The second maintains an existing posture with imperfective седи.
Location versus destination
The state verb takes location phrases. The transition takes direction phrases.
| Already seated: location | Taking a seat: destination |
|---|---|
| седети на столици (на + locative) | сести на столицу (на + accusative) |
| седети у ауту (у + locative) | сести у ауто (у + accusative) |
| седети за столом (instrumental) | сести за сто (за + accusative) |
Деца седе за столом и цртају честитке за баку.
The children are sitting at the table and drawing cards for Grandma.
Сешћемо за сто чим стигну остали гости.
We will sit down at the table as soon as the other guests arrive.
The case contrast is not decorative: locative/instrumental presents the resulting position, while accusative presents entry toward it. See the broader location–direction contrast.
Поред + genitive does not visibly alternate by direction, so aspect supplies the difference:
Марко је седео поред врата, а ја сам сео поред прозора.
Marko was sitting by the door, and I sat down by the window.
Vehicles and conventional frames
Serbian commonly says сести у ауто / такси / аутобус for getting into a vehicle when the passenger's seating is foregrounded. General boarding can instead use ући у, and a standing passenger can enter without “sitting down.”
Сели смо у такси испред станице и возач је одмах укључио таксиметар.
We got into a taxi in front of the station, and the driver immediately switched on the meter.
Сести за волан means take the driver's seat or start driving; the resulting position is седети за воланом.
Не седај за волан ако си толико уморан.
Don't get behind the wheel if you are that tired.
The imperfective negative imperative warns against undertaking the activity. One factual completed transition would use сео је за волан.
None of these verbs is ordinarily reflexive. Serbian says села је, not села се. An impersonal expression such as не седи ми се код куће “I don't feel like sitting at home” contains constructional се and a dative experiencer; it does not create an ordinary reflexive paradigm.
Micro-dialogue
— Да ли је слободно ово место? — Јесте, седите. Ја ионако силазим на следећој станици.
— Is this seat free? — Yes, have a seat. I'm getting off at the next stop anyway.
Polite седите is the common short invitation and is formally compatible with both paradigms. In an instruction contrasting one change with a later state, седните овде и седите мирно makes the lexical distinction overt.
Common Mistakes
Using the state for one completed transition
❌ Ушла је у чекаоницу и седела на слободну столицу.
Incorrect — на слободну столицу is a destination, so use perfective села је.
✅ Ушла је у чекаоницу и села на слободну столицу.
She entered the waiting room and sat down on a free chair.
Regularizing the perfective present
❌ Кад седим за сто, позваћу конобара.
Incorrect for one future transition — use седнем, not the state седим.
✅ Кад седнем за сто, позваћу конобара.
When I sit down at the table, I'll call the waiter.
Using location case after a transition
❌ Сео је на столици поред мене.
Incorrect — сести expresses direction into a position and takes на plus accusative here.
✅ Сео је на столицу поред мене.
He sat down on the chair next to me.
Adding reflexive се
❌ Седните се овде док донесем уговор.
Incorrect — сести is already intransitive; ordinary Serbian does not add се.
✅ Седните овде док донесем уговор.
Sit here while I bring the contract. (polite/plural)
Practice
Task 1: Build the timeline
Write three connected sentences: someone sits down with сести, remains seated with седети, and then gets up with устати. Use the correct l-participle in each past form.
Task 2: Change case with the event
Contrast на столици / на столицу, у ауту / у ауто, and за столом / за сто. For each pair, write one state and one transition sentence.
Key Takeaways
- Седети — седим is the seated state; сести — седнем is one transition into it.
- Седати — седам presents repeated or developing sitting-down events.
- Memorize irregular сео / села, the imperative variants седи / седни, and Future I сешћу.
- State locations and transition destinations require different case frames; none of the core verbs is reflexive.
