Налазити — наћи is the everyday pair for finding a person, object, answer, or solution. The two members must be learned as a lexical pair because their principal forms diverge sharply: налазим — налазио, but нађем — нашао. Just as importantly, neither verb means “look for”—searching is тражити, whether or not the search succeeds.
Principal forms
| Form | Imperfective налазити | Perfective наћи |
|---|---|---|
| present | налазим, налазиш, налази, налазимо, налазите, налазе | нађем, нађеш, нађе, нађемо, нађете, нађу |
| l-participle | налазио, налазила, налазили | нашао, нашла, нашли |
| imperative | налази, налазимо, налазите | нађи, нађимо, нађите |
| Future I | налазићу | наћи ћу |
Because наћи ends in -ћи, Future I is written as two words: наћи ћу, not наћићу. The perfective present stem has ђ, while the l-participle has ш and loses the ђ entirely.
У старим свескама често налазим корисне белешке.
I often find useful notes in old notebooks.
Коначно смо нашли стан близу школе.
We finally found an apartment near the school.
The first sentence presents repeated findings; the second presents one attained result. This is one of Serbian’s nonproductively related pairs, discussed further under unrelated-stem aspect pairs.
What is found: accusative
The person or thing found is a direct accusative object: наћи кључ, адресу, Марка, нови посао. Masculine animate forms show the accusative clearly.
Полиција је брзо нашла несталог планинара.
The police quickly found the missing hiker.
Јеси ли нашла пуњач који си јуче тражила?
Did you find the charger you were looking for yesterday? (female addressee)
When the object is already known, an accusative clitic replaces it.
Тражио сам уговор цело јутро, а онда сам га нашао испод фасцикле.
I looked for the contract all morning, and then I found it under the folder. (male speaker)
Here га refers to masculine уговор and follows auxiliary сам in the cluster. The search duration belongs to тражити; нашао marks the successful result.
Finding is not searching
English find sometimes describes a result and sometimes appears in phrases such as try to find. Serbian keeps the search and the result lexically separate:
| Stage | Serbian | What it asserts |
|---|---|---|
| search | тражити | someone is looking; success is open |
| bounded search | потражити | someone undertakes a search |
| result | наћи | the desired person or thing is located |
| repeated findings | налазити | results recur or are viewed imperfectively |
Тражимо мајстора који може да дође данас, али га још нисмо нашли.
We’re looking for a repair technician who can come today, but we haven’t found one yet.
Do not use налазити merely because a search is still in progress. Finding is result-oriented; an extended unsuccessful activity is тражити.
Пронаћи also means find or locate and often foregrounds successful searching or discovery. Its imperfective partner is проналазити. It is a related pair, not a required replacement for basic налазити — наћи.
Common extended objects
The accusative frame extends naturally beyond physical objects: наћи посао, решење, начин, заједнички језик. Serbian also says наћи времена, where genitive времена behaves as an indefinite quantity: find some time.
Морамо да нађемо начин да смањимо трошкове без отпуштања.
We have to find a way to reduce costs without layoffs.
Надам се да ћу наћи времена да посетим баку овог викенда.
I hope I’ll find time to visit Grandma this weekend.
In formal, administrative, and legal prose, налазити да… can mean “consider/find that.” (formal) This is a judgment verb, not the everyday physical finding sense.
Суд налази да достављени доказ није довољан.
The court finds that the submitted evidence is insufficient. (formal/legal)
Reflexive forms are separate lexemes
Налазити се commonly means “be located”: it describes a state, not repeated success at finding oneself. A location complement normally uses у/на + locative.
Архива се налази у подруму главне зграде.
The archive is located in the basement of the main building.
Perfective наћи се can mean find oneself somewhere, end up in a situation, or meet up. It does not mean “finish being located.”
Нашли смо се испред позоришта двадесет минута пре представе.
We met outside the theater twenty minutes before the performance.
После отказаног лета нашли су се у незгодној ситуацији.
After the canceled flight, they found themselves in an awkward situation.
In the third-person singular perfect, је is omitted beside се: Она се нашла, not она се је нашла. The separate pair сналазити се — снаћи се means manage, cope, or find one’s way; do not build that meaning from наћи alone.
Micro-dialogue
— Јеси ли нашао онај мали ресторан? — Јесам. Налази се иза пијаце, у дворишту старе куће.
— Did you find that little restaurant? — Yes. It is behind the market, in the courtyard of an old house. (male addressee)
The answer deliberately contrasts transitive нашао “found” with reflexive налази се “is located.”
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Search or result?
Say that you looked for your glasses for ten minutes and found them in your coat pocket.
Тражила сам наочаре десет минута и нашла их у џепу капута.
I looked for my glasses for ten minutes and found them in my coat pocket. (female speaker)
Task 2: Use the location lexeme
State where the nearest pharmacy is located.
Најближа апотека се налази поред поште.
The nearest pharmacy is located next to the post office.
Common Mistakes
Inventing the perfective present
❌ Ако наћем слободан термин, позваћу вас.
Incorrect—the present of наћи is нађем, with ђ.
✅ Ако нађем слободан термин, позваћу вас.
If I find an available appointment, I’ll call you. (formal or plural addressee)
Building the past from the present stem
❌ Јуче сам нађао изгубљену картицу.
Incorrect—the masculine l-participle is irregular нашао.
✅ Јуче сам нашао изгубљену картицу.
Yesterday I found the lost card. (male speaker)
Using finding for an unsuccessful search
❌ Налазим пасош већ пола сата, али још не знам где је.
Incorrect—an ongoing search with no result requires тражим, not налазим.
✅ Тражим пасош већ пола сата, али још не знам где је.
I’ve been looking for my passport for half an hour, but I still don’t know where it is.
Treating location as ordinary transitive finding
❌ Музеј налази у старом делу града.
Incorrect—the location lexeme requires reflexive се: налази се.
✅ Музеј се налази у старом делу града.
The museum is located in the old part of town.
