Стављати — ставити is the everyday Serbian pair for putting or placing something somewhere. Imperfective стављати presents placement as ongoing, repeated, or customary; perfective ставити presents one placement as completed. A complete construction normally answers two questions: what is moved, in the accusative, and where it ends up, in a destination phrase.
Principal forms
| Form | стављати (imperfective) | ставити (perfective) |
|---|---|---|
| present | стављам, стављаш, ставља, стављамо, стављате, стављају | ставим, ставиш, стави, ставимо, ставите, ставе |
| l-participle | стављао / стављала | ставио / ставила |
| imperative | стављај, стављајмо, стављајте | стави, ставимо, ставите |
| future, 1st singular | стављаћу | ставићу |
The imperfective preserves љ throughout: стављати, стављам, стављао. The perfective uses став- plus -и- forms: ставим, ставе, ставио. Both futures fuse after loss of infinitival -ти.
Свако вече стављам телефон на пуњач поред кревета.
Every evening I put my phone on the charger beside the bed.
Ставила сам супу у фрижидер чим се охладила.
I put the soup in the fridge as soon as it cooled down. (female speaker)
What is put: the accusative object
The moved or applied entity is a direct accusative object: ставити књигу, чашу, крему, потпис, услов. With masculine animate nouns, the accusative follows the animate pattern.
Организатори су ставили новог волонтера на главни улаз.
The organizers stationed the new volunteer at the main entrance.
Стави мало креме на опечено место, али немој да трљаш кожу.
Put a little cream on the burned area, but don't rub the skin.
English put almost always needs a complement specifying location or state. Serbian is similar, although стави овде/тамо can use an adverb when the place is obvious.
Where it goes: destination versus location
With у and на, placement creates directed motion toward a resulting position, so the destination is accusative: у фрижидер, у фиоку, на сто, на полицу.
Стави рачуне у плаву фасциклу, а уговор остави на столу.
Put the bills in the blue folder, and leave the contract on the desk.
The first destination is у + accusative because the papers move into the folder. In остави на столу, locative на столу describes where the contract will remain; оставити packages the caused location differently. With ставити, на сто is the ordinary directed frame.
Кључ сам ставио испод саксије, поред улазних врата.
I put the key under the flowerpot, beside the front door. (male speaker)
Prepositions such as поред + genitive simply locate the endpoint. Do not force accusative after every placement verb: the preposition itself determines the case. The у/на direction guide develops the destination–location contrast.
Process, habit, or one completed placement
Use стављати when observing the action from within, describing repeated placements, or giving a general recipe or procedure. Use ставити when one completed placement advances the event.
Док је стављала књиге на горњу полицу, једна кутија је пала.
While she was putting the books on the top shelf, a box fell.
Кад ставиш колач у рерну, подеси тајмер на тридесет минута.
When you put the cake in the oven, set the timer for thirty minutes.
Perfective present ставиш in the time clause is future-oriented. An ongoing present needs стављаш.
Dative beneficiaries and clitic order
A dative can identify the person for whom, onto whom, or into whose personal sphere something is placed. This dative comes before an accusative clitic.
Стави ми документе на сто; прегледаћу их после ручка.
Put the documents on my desk; I'll review them after lunch.
„Где да ставим пуњач?“ — „Стави ми га у спољни џеп ранца.“
‘Where should I put the charger?’ — ‘Put it in the outer pocket of my backpack.’
In ми га, dative ми precedes accusative га. Imperative стави provides the first-position host, and the clitic cluster follows it naturally. Full noun phrases need not stand in the same place, but the clitic order is fixed.
Instructions with impersonal/passive се
Recipes, labels, and instructions often use стављати се to focus on what is normally applied rather than on the person applying it. The grammatical subject still controls number.
Зачини се стављају тек пред крај кувања.
The spices are added only toward the end of cooking.
Ова крема се ставља два пута дневно на чисту кожу.
This cream is applied to clean skin twice a day.
Plural зачини requires стављају; singular крема requires ставља. These are not commands to put oneself somewhere. The construction suppresses a generic human agent.
Ставити се in fixed reflexive expressions
Ordinary physical placement is transitive and does not add се. Reflexive се appears in lexical expressions where a person adopts a position or makes themselves available.
Покушај да се ставиш у њен положај пре него што одговориш.
Try to put yourself in her position before you respond.
Наш правни тим ће вам се ставити на располагање за сва додатна питања.
Our legal team will make itself available to you for any further questions. (formal)
Ставити се на располагање is (formal) and common in professional correspondence. Everyday speech more often says ту смо ако вам треба помоћ. The се is part of the fixed reflexive expression; it is not added to every use of ставити.
High-value fixed collocations
Several abstract expressions must be learned as units:
| Construction | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ставити некоме до знања + да... | make it clear to someone that... |
| ставити тачку на нешто | put an end to something |
| ставити нешто на располагање | make something available |
| ставити потпис на документ | put/sign one's signature on a document |
Директорка нам је ставила до знања да се рок неће продужавати.
The director made it clear to us that the deadline would not be extended.
Овим споразумом желе да ставе тачку на дугогодишњи спор.
With this agreement, they want to put an end to the years-long dispute.
In the first construction, нам is the person receiving the message, and the да-clause states what is made clear. The second requires на + accusative: на спор.
Ставити, поставити, наместити, оставити
These verbs overlap, but they organize events differently:
- ставити is the broad everyday “put/place.”
- поставити often means set up, install, appoint, pose, or place deliberately: поставити питање, поставити уређај.
- наместити means arrange, adjust, or set into the desired configuration: наместити столицу, наместити аларм.
- оставити means leave something in a place or condition, often with attention on its remaining there.
Поставили су нови рутер, а ја сам га наместио тако да сигнал стиже до терасе.
They installed a new router, and I adjusted it so that the signal reaches the terrace. (male speaker)
English put a question does not map to ставити питање in neutral Serbian; say поставити питање.
Commands and negation
Perfective стави/ставите requests one completed placement. Imperfective не стављај normally prohibits a repeated action or practice. For one specifically feared outcome, немој да ставиш is natural.
Не стављај мокре пешкире на дрвену клупу.
Don't put wet towels on the wooden bench.
Negative imperatives do not obey a mechanical rule that permits only one aspect. The chosen viewpoint still matters.
Micro-dialogue
„Где си ставила карте за воз?“ — „У предњи џеп кофера.“ — „Стави их ипак у торбу; требаће нам пре него што предамо пртљаг.“
‘Where did you put the train tickets?’ — ‘In the front pocket of the suitcase.’ — ‘Put them in the bag instead; we'll need them before we check the luggage.’
Feminine ставила agrees with the addressee; plural их refers to карте; both destinations use у + accusative.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Build the complete placement frame
Translate “Put my keys in the small drawer.” Then replace “my keys” with an affected-person dative plus an accusative clitic, preserving the cluster order after стави.
Task 2: Choose among four verbs
Choose ставити, поставити, наместити, or оставити for: placing milk in the fridge, installing a camera, adjusting an alarm, and leaving papers on a colleague's desk. Explain what each verb foregrounds.
Common Mistakes
❌ Стави чашу на столу.
Incorrect destination case — movement onto the table requires на + accusative.
✅ Стави чашу на сто.
Put the glass on the table.
❌ Сада ставим књиге у кутију.
Incorrect for an action in progress — use imperfective стављам.
✅ Сада стављам књиге у кутију.
I'm putting the books in a box now.
❌ Стави га ми у ранац.
Incorrect clitic order — dative ми precedes accusative га.
✅ Стави ми га у ранац.
Put it in my backpack for me.
❌ Нови запослени је ставио питање о распореду.
Unnatural lexical choice — Serbian uses поставити питање.
✅ Нови запослени је поставио питање о распореду.
The new employee asked a question about the schedule.
❌ Ставила се књигу на полицу.
Incorrect — ordinary transitive placement takes an accusative object without reflexive се.
✅ Ставила је књигу на полицу.
She put the book on the shelf.
Key Takeaways
- Learn стављати — стављам and ставити — ставим — ставе as a pair.
- The moved entity is accusative; у/на + accusative normally marks its destination.
- Dative precedes accusative in a clitic cluster: стави ми га.
- Instructional крема се ставља suppresses a generic agent; fixed reflexive expressions have their own meanings.
- Do not make ставити carry every English put/set meaning: поставити, наместити, and оставити divide the field.
