Serbian usually replaces a familiar direct object with a short, unstressed pronoun: ме, те, га, је, нас, вас, их. These forms correspond broadly to English me, you, him/it, her/it, us, you, them, but they cannot be placed wherever English object pronouns appear. They are clitics: they depend prosodically on another word and normally occupy the sentence's second-position clitic slot.
This page focuses on everyday accusative objects. Full pronouns are used for emphasis and after prepositions; short pronouns are the neutral choice for an uncontrasted object. Unless labeled otherwise, the patterns are neutral contemporary standard Serbian.
Accusative pronoun forms
| Person/gender | Full accusative | Clitic accusative | Typical English value |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st singular | мене | ме | me |
| 2nd singular | тебе | те | you |
| 3rd singular masculine | њега | га | him / it |
| 3rd singular neuter | њега | га | it |
| 3rd singular feminine | њу | је / ју | her / it |
| 1st plural | нас | нас | us |
| 2nd plural / polite | вас | вас | you |
| 3rd plural, all genders | њих | их | them |
| reflexive, all persons | себе | се | myself, yourself, themselves… |
Ordinary spelling does not distinguish stressed full нас, вас from their unstressed clitic counterparts. Position and emphasis do. The third-person clitic agrees with the antecedent's grammatical gender and number, not with its English translation.
Марко је у ходнику; видим га кроз прозор.
Marko is in the hallway; I can see him through the window.
Огледало је стигло, али га још нисмо окачили.
The mirror has arrived, but we haven't hung it up yet.
Both Марко and neuter огледало are replaced by га. Feminine singular takes је, and any third-person plural antecedent takes их:
Где је Ана? Чекам је испред биоскопа.
Where is Ana? I'm waiting for her outside the cinema.
Карте су на столу; понеси их кад кренеш.
The tickets are on the table; take them when you leave.
Neutral placement: the second-position zone
A clitic cannot normally begin an independent sentence. With a one-word subject, it follows that subject; with an initial adverb or phrase, it normally follows the first suitable prosodic unit.
Милан ме зове свако вече после посла.
Milan calls me every evening after work.
Јуче су нас позвали на вечеру.
Yesterday they invited us to dinner.
После састанка ћу те сачекати испред зграде.
After the meeting I'll wait for you in front of the building.
The first “position” can be a whole phrase, such as после састанка. Do not count mechanically to the second written word. Serbian clitics attach after an initial prosodic constituent and remain close to the predicate.
For the complete placement system, including what counts as the first constituent, see the second-position rule.
Present-tense sentences can place a clitic after the finite verb when that verb begins the clause:
Разумем те, али се не слажем с твојим предлогом.
I understand you, but I don't agree with your proposal.
The pronoun remains unstressed. What is excluded in neutral prose is a clitic standing by itself at the very beginning: ме зове cannot start an independent sentence meaning “he calls me.”
Negatives, questions, and commands
Negation does not remove the object clitic. In a simple present-tense negative, the clitic commonly follows the finite verb; in compound forms it remains inside the clitic cluster.
Не чујем те добро због буке.
I can't hear you well because of the noise.
Нисмо их видели од прошлог лета.
We haven't seen them since last summer.
In a да ли question, the auxiliary and object clitic follow ли in their fixed order. A present-tense question without an auxiliary places the object before the lexical verb after да ли.
Да ли си га јуче позвала?
Did you call him yesterday?
Да ли ме разумете?
Do you understand me?
Positive imperatives normally place an object clitic after the imperative verb. Negative commands with немој use the clitic before the following present form.
Позови ме кад стигнеш кући.
Call me when you get home.
Немој га будити пре осам.
Don't wake him before eight.
These positions follow Serbian clitic syntax, not a special accusative ending. Memorizing useful frames—не чујем те, да ли ме разумеш, позови ме, немој га будити—builds correct placement together with the pronoun form.
Everyday verbs and case government
Clitic choice depends on the Serbian verb's government, not on the English translation. Чекати, слушати, питати, звати, видети, and разумети take a direct accusative object:
Чекам те код главног улаза.
I'm waiting for you at the main entrance.
Питаћу га да ли жели да нам се придружи.
I'll ask him whether he wants to join us.
Слушам вас, само наставите.
I'm listening to you; please continue.
English uses wait for and listen to, but Serbian does not insert corresponding prepositions here. Conversely, помагати/помоћи takes dative for the person helped: помажем му, not accusative га. Learning a verb means learning its case frame.
Не могу данас да му помогнем, али могу да га позовем.
I can't help him today, but I can call him.
The two pronouns refer to the same man. Му is dative under помоћи; га is accusative under позвати.
English speakers also tend to repeat a full noun after introducing its clitic equivalent. Neutral Serbian normally chooses one realization: Видим Марка or Видим га. A full pronoun may coexist only in marked structures with contrast or dislocation, which belong beyond the basic A2 pattern.
Full pronouns for contrast and after prepositions
Use the full forms when the object is contrastively emphasized, coordinated, isolated as an answer, or governed by a preposition.
Мене тражиш или њега?
Are you looking for me or him?
Ова порука је за тебе, а пакет је за њу.
This message is for you, and the package is for her.
The preposition за requires a full pronoun. Forms such as за те survive in older or regionally marked material but are not the neutral contemporary standard pattern; use за тебе. A full form can also appear after the verb when contrastive: Позвали су њу, не мене.
Feminine је and ју
The ordinary feminine singular accusative clitic is је: видим је, зовем је. The variant ју prevents a clash with the auxiliary clitic је and is required immediately before it. After negative није, both је and ју occur in standard Serbian; some traditional usage advice prefers ју there.
Милица је стигла, али је још нисам видела.
Milica has arrived, but I still haven't seen her.
Петар ју је позвао чим је чуо вест.
Petar called her as soon as he heard the news.
Није је препознао на старој фотографији.
He didn't recognize her in the old photograph; није ју препознао is also standard.
In ју је, the pronoun comes before the exceptional auxiliary је. Writing је је would create two identical adjacent clitics and is not the standard solution. A dedicated account appears on clitic forms and је/ју.
Clitic clusters
When an unstressed dative and accusative occur together, the dative comes first. Most auxiliary clitics precede the pronouns, but auxiliary је follows them:
Послаћу ти га чим стигнем у канцеларију.
I'll send it to you as soon as I get to the office.
Ана ми га је јуче вратила.
Ana returned it to me yesterday.
Да ли си им их већ показао?
Have you already shown those to them?
The last sentence is grammatical but referentially heavy; speakers often repeat a noun when two third-person plurals could confuse the listener. The fixed ordering is: auxiliary other than је → dative clitic → accusative clitic → се → auxiliary је, with only the slots actually needed.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: choose by antecedent
Replace књигу with a clitic:
Књига ми треба вечерас, зато је немој оставити у колима.
I need the book tonight, so don't leave it in the car.
Answer: feminine singular књига requires accusative clitic је.
Task 2: place two object clitics
Replace “to me” and “it” with short forms after Ана:
Ана ми га је донела после ручка.
Ana brought it to me after lunch.
Answer: dative ми precedes accusative га, and auxiliary је follows the pronominal clitics.
Common Mistakes
1. Starting an independent sentence with a clitic.
❌ Га познајем са факултета.
Incorrect — unstressed га cannot occupy the initial position in a neutral independent sentence.
✅ Познајем га са факултета.
I know him from university.
2. Using a clitic after a preposition.
❌ Ово место је резервисано за те.
Incorrect in contemporary standard Serbian — a preposition requires the full form тебе.
✅ Ово место је резервисано за тебе.
This seat is reserved for you.
3. Choosing the pronoun from English natural gender instead of Serbian grammatical gender.
❌ Где је писмо? Јеси ли је послао?
Incorrect — писмо is neuter, so its singular accusative clitic is га.
✅ Где је писмо? Јеси ли га послао?
Where is the letter? Did you send it?
4. Putting two identical је clitics together.
❌ Ана је рекла да је је Марко позвао.
Incorrect — feminine accusative је changes to ју next to auxiliary је.
✅ Ана је рекла да ју је Марко позвао.
Ana said that Marko had called her.
Key Takeaways
Use ме, те, га, је, нас, вас, and их for neutral, familiar accusative objects. Match third-person forms to the Serbian antecedent, place clitics in the second-position cluster, and use full forms for contrast or after prepositions. Verb government remains decisive: English wait for becomes accusative чекати некога, while Serbian помоћи некоме requires dative. In clusters, dative precedes accusative, and feminine ју resolves contact with auxiliary је.
