The English verb use hides two common Serbian constructions: transitive користити нешто, with an accusative object, and reflexive користити се нечим, with an instrumental complement. They often describe the same practical act, but they organize the participants differently, so the cases and clitics cannot be mixed freely.
The core contrast
The unmarked everyday pattern treats the tool, service, or resource as a direct object:
За плаћање рачуна користим мобилну апликацију.
I use a mobile app to pay bills.
Here мобилну апликацију is accusative. A masculine animate object would also follow the ordinary direct-object rules, including animacy where relevant.
The reflexive construction instead presents the same item as a means available to the user:
На путовањима се користимо јавним превозом кад год можемо.
When traveling, we use public transportation whenever we can.
Here јавним превозом is instrumental, without са. This construction is neutral in careful prose and common in speech, although the shorter accusative pattern is often more direct in casual instructions.
| Frame | Question | Typical focus |
|---|---|---|
| користити + accusative | Шта користиш? | the thing directly used |
| користити се + instrumental | Чиме се користиш? | the means or resource employed |
Forms you need
Користити is imperfective. Its present stem is користи-, and the same forms serve both constructions; the reflexive frame simply adds clitic се.
| Person | Present | Reflexive present |
|---|---|---|
| ја | користим | користим се |
| ти | користиш | користиш се |
| он / она / оно | користи | користи се |
| ми | користимо | користимо се |
| ви | користите | користите се |
| они / оне / она | користе | користе се |
The complete l-participle is користио, користила, користило; користили, користиле, користила (masculine, feminine, and neuter singular; then plural). The imperative is користи, користимо, користите, and Future I is користићу, користићеш, користиће, користићемо, користићете, користиће.
Раније смо користили папирне карте, а сада их чувамо у телефону.
We used to use paper tickets, but now we keep them on our phones.
Користите заштитне рукавице док чистите рерну.
Use protective gloves while cleaning the oven.
In the affirmative third-person singular perfect, је is omitted next to reflexive се:
Милица се годинама користила истим приручником.
Milica used the same handbook for years.
The order is Милица се користила, not Милица се је користила. See the wider clitic-order system.
Objects, pronouns, and purpose
An accusative object can become a weak object clitic:
Овај стари лаптоп још ради, па га користим за онлајн састанке.
This old laptop still works, so I use it for online meetings.
The clitic га occupies the normal second-position cluster. By contrast, Serbian has no weak instrumental clitic corresponding to English it. The reflexive construction needs a full instrumental pronoun such as њиме.
Програм је бесплатан и цела екипа се њиме користи.
The program is free, and the whole team uses it.
Purpose is commonly expressed by за + accusative after either frame:
Ову просторију користимо за разговоре са клијентима.
We use this room for meetings with clients.
Као plus a noun phrase identifies a role rather than a purpose; in this transitive frame, that phrase normally matches the accusative object:
Празну теглу користим као посуду за оловке.
I use the empty jar as a pencil holder.
Aspect is lexical, not mechanical
There is no single perfective that merely means “the same action, once.” Искористити normally adds the idea of making use of an opportunity or resource, sometimes fully and sometimes opportunistically. With a person it can mean exploit, so context matters.
Искористили смо сунчано јутро да прошетамо поред реке.
We took advantage of the sunny morning to walk by the river.
Употребити means apply or put something to use on a bounded occasion; its imperfective partner is употребљавати. It is frequent in instructions and technical prose (formal/technical).
Ако се мрља не скине водом, употребите благо средство за чишћење.
If the stain does not come off with water, use a mild cleaning product.
Therefore, do not automatically replace imperfective користити with искористити whenever English has simple past. Serbian aspect tracks the viewpoint and lexical result, not English tense. The aspect-pair guide explains why prefixes often change meaning.
A different meaning: “be useful”
Non-reflexive користити can also mean benefit, be useful to. The thing that brings benefit is the grammatical subject, while the beneficiary is dative.
Кратка пауза ће нам користити пре другог дела састанка.
A short break will do us good before the second part of the meeting.
In нам користити, нам does not mean “we use it”; it means “be useful to us.” Word order and case reveal which meaning is intended.
Micro-dialogue
— Користиш ли службени рачунар код куће? — Ретко; углавном се користим својим таблетом.
— Do you use the work computer at home? — Rarely; I mostly use my own tablet.
The first speaker chooses the direct accusative object службени рачунар. The reply shifts to reflexive се plus instrumental својим таблетом. Both are contemporary standard Serbian.
Common Mistakes
Mixing reflexive се with an accusative object
❌ Сваког дана се користим ову апликацију.
Incorrect — the reflexive construction requires instrumental, not accusative.
✅ Сваког дана се користим овом апликацијом.
I use this app every day.
Adding са before the instrumental means
❌ На послу се користимо са новим програмом.
Incorrect — користити се governs a bare instrumental; do not add са.
✅ На послу се користимо новим програмом.
At work we use a new program.
Replacing an instrumental pronoun with an object clitic
❌ Алат је једноставан и сви се га користе.
Incorrect — га is accusative, but користити се requires the full instrumental pronoun њиме.
✅ Алат је једноставан и сви се њиме користе.
The tool is simple, and everyone uses it.
Treating искористити as a neutral one-time version
❌ За пријаву сам искористио плаву хемијску, а не црну.
Awkward here — искористити suggests exploiting or making full use of something; neutral tool choice takes користити or употребити.
✅ За пријаву сам користио плаву хемијску, а не црну.
I used a blue ballpoint pen for the application, not a black one.
Practice
Task 1: Change the frame
Rewrite Користимо овај улаз with користити се, changing the noun to instrumental. Then rewrite Не користим се тим уређајем without се, using an accusative object. Keep the meaning natural.
Task 2: Choose the right verb
For each situation, choose користити, искористити, or употребити: a habitual software tool; taking advantage of a free afternoon; a one-time technical instruction. Add an object or complement showing the correct case.
Key Takeaways
- Користити нешто takes accusative; користити се нечим takes a bare instrumental.
- Се is a second-position clitic, while an instrumental pronoun must be a full form such as њиме.
- Искористити and употребити add their own lexical meanings; they are not automatic perfective replacements.
- In нешто користи некоме, the dative names the person who benefits.
