Успевати / успети marks the difference between attempting something and actually reaching the result: try does not entail success, but manage to does. The pair is also a useful model of how Serbian aspect interacts with complement clauses and perfective present forms.
One result or a recurring pattern
Perfective успети presents a successful outcome as a whole. Imperfective успевати presents repeated successes, an ongoing ability to manage, or a struggle viewed without selecting one completed result.
После неколико покушаја успели смо да отворимо заглављен прозор.
After several attempts, we managed to open the jammed window.
Последњих недеља ретко успевам да завршим посао пре шест.
In recent weeks, I rarely manage to finish work before six.
The first sentence reports one attained result; the second describes a repeated pattern. Negative imperfective не успевам is especially common for an obstacle that keeps recurring.
High-value forms
The perfective present is different enough from the imperfective to memorize as a set. It uses the base успе- in успем, успеш, успе..., not imperfective успева-.
| Person | успевати (impf.) | успети (pf.) |
|---|---|---|
| ја | успевам | успем |
| ти | успеваш | успеш |
| он / она / оно | успева | успе |
| ми | успевамо | успемо |
| ви | успевате | успете |
| они / оне / она | успевају | успеју |
The complete l-participles are успевао, успевала, успевало; успевали, успевале, успевала and успео, успела, успело; успели, успеле, успела. Future I is успеваћу, успеваћеш, успеваће, успеваћемо, успеваћете, успеваће but успећу, успећеш, успеће, успећемо, успећете, успеће. The imperatives are успевај, успевајмо, успевајте and успеј, успејмо, успејте; both sets are grammatically possible, but ordering someone to succeed is pragmatically unusual. Everyday encouragement prefers Потруди се!, Покушај!, or a future statement.
Држи се плана и успећеш да предаш рад на време.
Stick to the plan and you will manage to submit the paper on time.
Ако успемо да нађемо сто напољу, послаћу ти поруку.
If we manage to find a table outside, I will message you.
A perfective present such as успемо normally appears in a future, conditional, habitual, or subordinate environment. It does not describe an action unfolding “right now.”
Manage to: да-clause and infinitive
The everyday Serbian frame is успети да + present, with the person and number of the embedded verb matching its understood subject.
Јелена је успела да убеди станодавца да поправи грејање.
Jelena managed to persuade the landlord to repair the heating.
Clitics belonging to the embedded verb stay inside the да clause:
Нисам успео да му је пошаљем пре састанка.
I didn't manage to send it to him before the meeting.
Here му and feminine accusative је depend on пошаљем, not on успео. Their order follows the normal clitic cluster.
A same-subject infinitive is also standard Serbian, particularly in concise written style and in areas or speakers that favor it. It must not be labeled universally wrong.
Упркос кашњењу, успела је стићи пре затварања шалтера.
Despite the delay, she managed to arrive before the counter closed.
In neutral conversation many speakers would say успела је да стигне. The choice is a usage preference, not a truth-condition difference; see да versus the infinitive.
Succeed in a domain
For success in an activity, plan, or field, use у + locative.
Успео је у намери да окупи комшије око заједничког пројекта.
He succeeded in his intention to bring the neighbors together around a shared project.
Иако је тек почела, Мина је брзо успела у новом послу.
Although she had only just started, Mina quickly succeeded in her new line of work.
The construction is intransitive: there is no accusative “thing succeeded.” У томе is locative, not у то.
Serbian also has the impersonal result frame успети некоме, with a dative experiencer and neuter agreement:
Коначно ми је успело да подесим штампач без туђе помоћи.
I finally managed to set up the printer without anyone else's help.
Literally, the achievement “worked out for me.” Because the construction is impersonal, the participle is neuter успело, regardless of the speaker's gender.
Aspect and negation
Negated perfective нисам успео denies a particular attained result. Negated imperfective не успевам describes a repeated or current pattern of failure.
Јутрос нисмо успели да добијемо ординацију телефоном.
This morning we did not manage to reach the clinic by phone.
Никако не успевамо да ускладимо слободне дане.
We just can't manage to coordinate our days off.
Neither form is merely a stylistic synonym of моћи. Нисам могао да дођем gives inability or impossibility; нисам успео да дођем implies an intended effort whose result was not reached.
Micro-dialogue
— Јеси ли успела да резервишеш термин? — Јесам, али тек из трећег покушаја; преко сајта никако нисам успевала.
— Did you manage to book an appointment? — Yes, but only on the third try; I kept failing to do it through the website.
Perfective успела answers about one result. Imperfective нисам успевала looks back at the repeated unsuccessful process.
Common Mistakes
Building the perfective present from the wrong stem
❌ Ако успевем да завршим раније, свратићу до тебе.
Incorrect — the perfective present is успем, not a blend of успевати and успети.
✅ Ако успем да завршим раније, свратићу до тебе.
If I manage to finish earlier, I will stop by your place.
Using accusative after у for a domain
❌ Успела је у своју намеру да промени распоред.
Incorrect — succeed in takes у plus locative: у својој намери.
✅ Успела је у својој намери да промени распоред.
She succeeded in her intention to change the schedule.
Making the impersonal participle agree with the experiencer
❌ Ани је успела да сама поправи полицу.
Incorrect in the impersonal frame — the fixed result form is neuter успело, while Ани is dative.
✅ Ани је успело да сама поправи полицу.
Ana managed to repair the shelf by herself.
Equating attempting with succeeding
❌ Покушао сам да откључам врата, зато сам успео.
Incorrect logic — an attempt does not by itself entail a successful result.
✅ Покушао сам да откључам врата, али нисам успео.
I tried to unlock the door, but I didn't manage to.
Practice
Task 1: Select the viewpoint
Use успевати for a repeated problem and успети for one attained result. Write one present sentence with никако, one past sentence with после два покушаја, and one conditional clause beginning with ако.
Task 2: Build the complement
Express “we managed to send it to her” once with да + present and once with a same-subject infinitive. Then write a sentence about succeeding in a plan, using у + locative.
Key Takeaways
- Успевати presents an ongoing or repeated pattern; успети presents one attained result.
- Memorize успем, успеш, успе, успемо, успете, успеју and успео / успела.
- “Manage to” normally takes да + present, while a same-subject infinitive is also standard.
- “Succeed in” takes у + locative; impersonal успело ми је keeps neuter agreement.
