Annotated Scholarly Essay | Serbian Grammar

Serbian scholarly prose defines its terms, attributes claims, limits their scope, and guides the reader from an established topic to a narrower research question. Its density comes from nominalization, participial modifiers, impersonal constructions, and carefully staged information—not from ornamental obscurity. The original passage below models that architecture without quoting or paraphrasing a published source.

Text status: This is an original didactic excerpt about digital accessibility. References to “the literature” demonstrate citation framing only; a real article would have to supply exact, verifiable citations.

The complete scholarly passage

Под дигиталном приступачношћу подразумева се могућност да различити корисници, укључујући особе које користе асистивне технологије, самостално приступе садржају и обаве предвиђени задатак.

Digital accessibility is understood as the ability of different users, including people who use assistive technologies, to access content independently and complete the intended task.

У литератури о јавним дигиталним услугама често се истиче да приступачност не зависи само од техничке усклађености већ и од јасноће поступка.

The literature on public digital services often emphasizes that accessibility depends not only on technical compliance but also on the clarity of the process.

Ипак, ту тврдњу треба ограничити: уклањање једне препреке не значи нужно да је услуга у целини постала приступачна.

That claim must nevertheless be qualified: removing one barrier does not necessarily mean that the service as a whole has become accessible.

Полазећи од ужег одређења, у овом раду разматрамо обрасце порука о грешци које корисник добија током пријављивања на систем.

Starting from a narrower definition, we examine patterns in the error messages that users receive while signing in to the system.

Посебна пажња посвећена је начину на који се кориснику саопштава шта треба да исправи, јер се тиме истовремено обликују његово разумевање проблема и могућност да поступак настави без туђе помоћи.

Particular attention is paid to how users are told what they need to correct, because this simultaneously shapes their understanding of the problem and their ability to continue the process without another person's help.

The analysis, therefore, does not measure the service's accessibility in an absolute sense; rather, it examines one linguistic and interactional layer of it.

The translation opens with an English passive, but Serbian под X подразумева се Y literally organizes the definition as “under X, Y is understood.” The fourth sentence deliberately switches to authorial разматрамо because its opening verbal adverb needs a controller. Impersonal wording is characteristic of some academic passages, but it is not a mandatory substitute for every active clause.

5	Passive пажња је посвећена takes dative начину. Dative кориснику marks the recipient of information. Instrumental тиме resumes the whole communication choice as a cause or means.	The sentence motivates the chosen focus by naming two consequences.
6	Connector дакле is parenthetical and comma-delimited. Contrast не... него... corrects an overbroad reading. Possessive њен is nominative masculine singular with слој while referring back to feminine услуге.	The final sentence states the study's boundary and contribution.

Definition before argument

The frame под X подразумева се Y is academic/formal and useful when a term has several possible meanings. It does not claim that the definition is universally accepted; it states the sense adopted in the text.

Под локалном заједницом у овом раду подразумевају се становници који редовно користе посматрану јавну услугу.

In this paper, local community means the residents who regularly use the public service under study.

Plural становници triggers подразумевају се. A more direct authorial version is possible:

In this paper, we use the term local community for residents who regularly use the service under study.

The first suppresses the researcher; the second uses an authorial plural. Neither is intrinsically more scholarly. Choose according to disciplinary convention and the need to identify agency.

Citation framing is not a citation

У литератури се истиче да..., према ранијим истраживањима, and како наводи ауторка... locate a claim relative to prior work. They cannot replace a bibliographic reference.

Према налазима наведеним у прегледној студији, јасна повратна информација смањује број поновљених грешака [навести извор].

According to the findings reported in the review study, clear feedback reduces the number of repeated errors [source required].

The bracketed note is deliberately a drafting flag, not a fabricated citation. Према governs dative налазима; passive participle наведеним agrees with it. A final article must replace the note with a traceable source.

A citation frame answers “whose evidence or position?” A reference answers “where can the reader verify it?” Scholarly Serbian needs both when the claim comes from prior work.

Nominalization packages processes as topics

The passage uses уклањање, пријављивање, разумевање. These verbal nouns allow a process to fill a noun slot, take attributes, and become a stable discourse topic.

Уклањање нејасних упутстава олакшава довршавање поступка.

Removing unclear instructions makes it easier to complete the process.

The genitive phrases нејасних упутстава and поступка depend on the nominalizations. Dense chains can become opaque:

Поновљено проверавање разумљивости обавештења успорило је објављивање резултата.

Repeated checking of the comprehensibility of the notices delayed publication of the results.

This is grammatical, but three abstract nouns hide who checked and who published. Academic register does not require maximal nominal density.

The wider contrast between verbal nouns and clause-based alternatives is developed in gerundive and nominalization strategies.

Information structure guides the reader

Initial phrases map the argument:

под дигиталном приступачношћу establishes the term;
у литератури... shifts to prior work;
ипак signals qualification;
полазећи од... / у овом раду narrows to the present analysis;
посебна пажња introduces the focal object;
анализа, дакле states the inference.

Moving all new material to the beginning would obscure these links. Serbian word order is flexible, but scholarly variation is conditioned by topic and focus.

У средишту анализе нису појединачне речи, већ редослед корака који корисник мора да прати.

At the center of the analysis are not individual words but the sequence of steps that the user must follow.

The marked initial locative announces the organizing topic; contrastive нису... већ... places the corrected focus later.

Plain-language rewrite

Here is the same argument for a general reader. It is not “less correct”; it redistributes information into shorter clauses, names actions more directly, and reduces nominal chains.

Дигитална услуга је приступачна када различити људи могу самостално да је користе и заврше оно због чега су јој приступили. Није довољно да страница само испуњава техничка правила: корисник мора и да разуме сваки корак. Зато у овом тексту посматрамо поруке које се појављују када неко погреши током пријављивања. Питамо да ли те поруке јасно објашњавају шта треба исправити. Не оцењујемо целу услугу, већ само овај део комуникације са корисником.

A digital service is accessible when different people can use it independently and complete what they came to it to do. It is not enough for a page merely to meet technical rules: users must also understand each step. That is why this text looks at messages that appear when someone makes a mistake while signing in. We ask whether those messages clearly explain what needs to be corrected. We do not evaluate the whole service, only this part of communication with the user.

The rewrite retains the scope limitation and causal logic. It does not merely replace long words with short ones; it restores agents and actions where that helps comprehension.

Register and authorship

The passage is academic. Impersonal and passive constructions are used to manage information, not to manufacture objectivity. When responsibility matters, name it: аутори су одабрали узорак is clearer than узорак је одабран if the selection method is being evaluated.

No form here is literary, archaic, or regionally marked. The spelling is ordinary Ekavian standard Serbian. A real publication may use Serbian Latin instead, depending on journal policy; script choice does not change the syntax.

Reuse the passage

Task 1: Build a definition and limitation

Define медијска писменост with под X подразумева се Y, then qualify one overly broad consequence with ипак and a colon.

Task 2: Attribute without inventing

Write one sentence with према + dative and one with како наводи + named author. Add a visible source placeholder rather than fabricating a bibliographic detail.

Task 3: Decompress nominalizations

Rewrite the sentence about поновљено проверавање разумљивости обавештења as two active clauses that identify who checks and who publishes.

Common Mistakes

Using the wrong case after подразумевати in the defining frame

❌ Под дигитална приступачност подразумева се лако коришћење.

Incorrect—под in this defining frame requires instrumental.

✅ Под дигиталном приступачношћу подразумева се могућност самосталног коришћења услуге.

Digital accessibility means the possibility of using a service independently.

Using a citation frame without an attributable source

❌ Према истраживањима, овај поступак је увек ефикаснији.

Academically inadequate—the absolute claim is attributed only to unspecified 'research.'

✅ Према студији која је наведена у библиографији, овај поступак је био ефикаснији у посматраном узорку.

According to the study listed in the bibliography, this procedure was more effective in the sample examined.

Letting a verbal adverb dangle

❌ Полазећи од ове дефиниције, обрасци су детаљно описани.

Incorrect control—the sentence implies that the patterns themselves started from the definition.
