Academic Serbian is designed to define concepts, delimit claims, present evidence, and make the route from source to conclusion inspectable. Its characteristic tone comes from the whole bundle: controlled terminology, explicit qualification, source attribution, cohesive paragraph structure, disciplined nominalization, and consistent script—not from replacing every ordinary verb with an abstract noun.
Fields and journals differ. A humanities article may use first-person plural показаћемо, while an experimental report may prefer резултати показују or impersonal у раду се анализира. The central requirement is accountable argument, not impersonality for its own sake.
Define the term before arguing with it
An academic definition identifies both the category and the boundary intended in the current study. Productive frames include под X подразумевамо Y, X означава Y, and X се у овом раду односи на Y.
Под диграфијом у овом раду подразумевамо стабилну употребу два писма у оквиру исте језичке заједнице.
In this paper, digraphia means the stable use of two scripts within the same language community. (academic)
Термин корпус овде се односи искључиво на електронски претраживу збирку текстова.
The term corpus here refers exclusively to an electronically searchable collection of texts.
Подразумевати takes an accusative object, while односити се на takes на + accusative. The phrase у овом раду restricts the definition to the author's operational use; it does not claim that every discipline defines the term identically.
Terminology should be stable. If испитаник means a participant in one section, switching casually to субјект may introduce a different technical or ethical framing. Define competing labels and choose one.
Qualify a claim without making it empty
Strong academic prose distinguishes evidence from certainty. Useful qualifiers include у посматраном узорку, у извесној мери, вероватно, може се претпоставити, подаци указују на, and не може се искључити.
У посматраном узорку ова конструкција се јавља чешће у интервјуима него у новинским извештајима.
In the sample examined, this construction occurs more often in interviews than in news reports.
Добијени подаци указују на повезаност две појаве, али не доказују узрочну везу.
The data obtained indicate an association between the two phenomena but do not prove a causal relationship.
The first limits population; the second limits inference. Указивати на + accusative is weaker than доказати + accusative. English suggest cannot always be translated by one verb: data may указивати, an author may предлагати a method, and a reviewer may сугерисати a revision.
На основу расположивих извора може се претпоставити да је промена почела раније, али тачан датум није утврђен.
On the basis of the available sources, it may be assumed that the change began earlier, but the exact date has not been established.
Do not stack hedges until the claim disappears. Можда би се донекле могло претпоставити is justified only if each layer marks a real uncertainty.
Evidence and citation: say who supports what
Source frames include према + dative, на основу + genitive, and reporting verbs such as наводити, показати, истицати, тврдити. Each verb signals a different evidential stance.
Према Петровићу (2022), промена реда речи прати промену информационе структуре.
According to Petrović (2022), the change in word order accompanies a change in information structure.
Јовановић (2020) наводи три изузетка, док Марковић (2023) оспорава њихову анализу.
Jovanović (2020) lists three exceptions, while Marković (2023) challenges their analysis.
Наводи neutrally reports or lists; тврди foregrounds the source's commitment and may imply contestability; доказује should be reserved for an argument that actually establishes the conclusion. Citation grammar is developed under Quoting and Attribution.
Serbian normative quotation marks are „…“. A paraphrase is not placed in quotation marks merely because it comes from a source. Exact wording, translation, and paraphrase must remain visibly distinct.
Cohesion: one relation per connector
Academic connectors commit the writer to a logical relation:
| Relation | Useful markers |
|---|---|
| addition | такође, осим тога |
| contrast/concession | међутим, с друге стране, ипак |
| cause/result | због тога, стога |
| inference | дакле, према томе |
| reformulation | другим речима, односно |
| sequence | најпре, затим, коначно |
Две групе се не разликују по узрасту. Међутим, разлика у претходном образовању статистички је значајна.
The two groups do not differ in age. However, the difference in prior education is statistically significant.
Међутим marks contrast; ипак would add a defeated expectation. Дакле introduces an inference, not the next event in a chronology. A paragraph whose every sentence starts with такође remains structurally weak.
Use lexical chains as well as connectors: истраживање — анализа — резултати — ови налази. Demonstrative ови налази should have a recoverable antecedent, not point vaguely to several pages of material. See Building Cohesion Across Sentences.
Nominalization: useful concept or hidden action?
Academic writing needs stable concepts such as варијабилност, дистрибуција, корелација, усвајање језика. Yet chains of verbal nouns can hide who did what and whether an event was completed.
Анализа одговора показала је да су учесници различито тумачили питање.
The analysis of the responses showed that the participants interpreted the question differently.
This nominalization is useful: анализа names the research operation and finite показала је asserts its result. Compare an overloaded version:
Извршено је спровођење анализе одговора ради утврђивања постојања разлика.
An analysis of the responses was carried out in order to determine the existence of differences. (bureaucratically overloaded)
A clearer academic revision is:
Анализирали смо одговоре да бисмо утврдили да ли се групе разликују.
We analyzed the responses to determine whether the groups differed.
First-person plural is not inherently informal. If the field permits authorial ми, it can identify responsibility. Otherwise use a justified impersonal or patient-centered form, not several empty process nouns. Clause-to-Noun Nominalization explains what case and argument distinctions disappear.
Unsupported English calques
International terminology is normal when established in the discipline. The problem is not foreign origin but unsupported meaning or syntax.
- English evidence is usually докази, подаци, налази, not евиденција, which commonly means records/registers.
- address a problem is размотрити проблем, бавити се проблемом, решавати проблем, not automatically адресирати проблем.
- based on is often на основу + genitive or заснован на + locative, not a dangling базирано на copied without agreement.
- eventually is на крају, с временом, коначно, not евентуално, which means possibly/if necessary.
На основу ових доказа не може се извести закључак о целој популацији.
On the basis of this evidence, no conclusion can be drawn about the entire population.
У последњем одељку разматрамо ограничења примењене методе.
In the final section, we discuss the limitations of the method used.
Parallel rewrite 1: conversation to academic claim
Чини ми се да људи у разговору чешће изостављају заменицу.
It seems to me that people omit the pronoun more often in conversation. (neutral personal observation)
У анализираном разговорном корпусу субјекатска заменица изостављена је у 68 одсто релевантних примера.
In the conversational corpus analyzed, the subject pronoun was omitted in 68 percent of the relevant examples. (academic result)
The rewrite changes vocabulary (људи to a defined corpus), supplies method and denominator, removes unsupported intuition, and organizes information as domain → variable → result. Address forms are absent because the prose addresses no individual.
Parallel rewrite 2: bureaucratic to academic
Извршена је реализација испитивања ставова испитаника по питању примене мере.
A survey of respondents' attitudes regarding implementation of the measure was carried out. (administrative noun stacking)
Испитали смо ставове учесника о примени мере помоћу упитника од дванаест ставки.
We examined participants' attitudes toward implementation of the measure using a twelve-item questionnaire. (academic method statement)
The academic version names the researcher, participants, object, and instrument. It keeps necessary technical vocabulary but replaces извршена је реализација and vague по питању with finite syntax and о + locative.
Practice
Task 1: Build a bounded claim
State one result, limit it to a sample, identify the evidence with на основу + genitive, and add one conclusion the data do not support.
Task 2: Rewrite and annotate
Rewrite a conversational observation and an administrative noun chain as academic prose. Annotate terminology, syntax, script, address, information density, and paragraph organization.
Common Mistakes
Translating evidence as евиденција
❌ Евиденција доказује да су две појаве повезане.
Incorrect calque for the intended meaning—евиденција is a record or register, not generic research evidence.
✅ Прикупљени подаци указују на повезаност две појаве.
The data collected indicate an association between the two phenomena.
Claiming more than the sample supports
❌ Свих тридесет испитаника из једне школе доказује како говоре сви млади у Србији.
Incorrect inference—a thirty-person sample from one school cannot establish a universal claim about all young people in Serbia.
✅ Резултати се односе на тридесет испитаника из једне школе и не могу се без додатних података уопштити на све младе у Србији.
The results concern thirty participants from one school and cannot be generalized to all young people in Serbia without additional data.
Copying English verb government
❌ Овај одељак адресира на проблем недостатка података.
Incorrect calqued government—use бавити се + instrumental or размотрити + accusative.
✅ Овај одељак се бави проблемом недостатка података.
This section addresses the problem of insufficient data.
Mistaking density for rigor
❌ Извршење спровођења анализирања омогућило је реализацију утврђивања резултата.
Incorrectly inflated and semantically empty noun chain—it obscures the action rather than making it rigorous.
✅ Анализа нам је омогућила да утврдимо разлике међу групама.
The analysis enabled us to identify differences among the groups.
Key Takeaways
- Define terms operationally and keep labels stable.
- Qualify population, evidence, and inference rather than adding vague hedges.
- Attribute sources with verbs that accurately represent their stance and evidential force.
- Use nominalization for stable concepts, but restore finite verbs when actor, time, aspect, or modality matters.
- Academic Serbian is not English syntax with Serbian words and not administrative prose made denser.
