Building Cohesion Across Sentences

Cohesion is the network of signals that lets readers recognize who and what remain under discussion and how one claim follows from another. Serbian builds that network through lexical repetition, null subjects, pronouns and demonstratives, ellipsis, aspectual continuity, and connectives. A text is not cohesive merely because every sentence begins with и “and” or repeats the same noun.

For English speakers, the most important adjustment is that Serbian often omits a recoverable subject, but becomes more explicit at a genuine topic change. Good cohesion therefore alternates omission and repetition strategically rather than applying either everywhere.

Introduce a referent, then maintain it economically

A full noun phrase normally introduces or reactivates a participant. Once that participant is the stable subject, Serbian verb agreement can maintain the chain without an overt pronoun.

Нова координаторка је јутрос преузела пројекат. Најпре је прегледала календар, а затим је позвала вође свих тимова.

The new coordinator took over the project this morning. She first reviewed the schedule and then called the leaders of all the teams.

English repeats she; Serbian omits it because feminine прегледала and позвала plus the discourse topic make the referent recoverable. Inserting она in both clauses would add unnecessary contrast.

An overt subject is useful when the chain changes:

Координаторка је прегледала календар. Финансијски директор је, међутим, затражио да се рокови поново израчунају.

The coordinator reviewed the schedule. The finance director, however, requested that the deadlines be recalculated.

The full phrase prevents the reader from carrying the old subject forward. If two same-gender participants are active, repeat a name or role before ambiguity develops:

Милица је обавестила Јелену да је састанак одложен. Јелена је затим позвала остале учеснике.

Milica informed Jelena that the meeting had been postponed. Jelena then called the other participants.

Starting the second sentence only with Затим је позвала... would leave the caller uncertain. Cohesion is not maximal omission; it is recoverable reference.

💡
Omit a Serbian subject while one participant remains the unambiguous center. Repeat or rename it at a topic switch, after competing referents, or when contrast is intended.

Demonstratives can refer to an entity or a proposition

Овај, тај, онај agree with a noun and help distinguish referents in discourse. Their choice also carries distance and discourse perspective, so they are not mechanical equivalents of English this and that.

Добили смо два предлога. Први смањује трошкове, али тај предлог захтева дужи прелазни период.

We received two proposals. The first reduces costs, but that proposal requires a longer transition period.

Demonstrative neuter то can refer to a preceding proposition:

Добављач није доставио сертификат. То значи да поступак још не може бити завршен.

The supplier did not submit the certificate. That means the procedure cannot yet be completed.

Here то does not stand for the masculine noun сертификат. It packages the entire preceding fact. A lexical summary can be even clearer in formal prose:

Добављач није доставио сертификат. Овај пропуст одложио је технички пријем опреме.

The supplier did not submit the certificate. This omission delayed the technical acceptance of the equipment.

Овај пропуст classifies the previous event and makes the causal link explicit. Such “shell nouns” are useful, but vague strings of то, ово, and оно force readers to guess their antecedents.

Ellipsis works only when structure remains parallel

Repeated subjects and predicates may be omitted when their content and grammatical relations are recoverable.

Секретарка је проверила списак учесника и послала га обезбеђењу.

The secretary checked the participant list and sent it to security.

One subject controls both predicates; accusative clitic га clearly refers to списак. Coordination becomes harder when the omitted material would have to change case, polarity, aspect, or actor.

Правна служба је прегледала уговор, а финансијска служба анекс.

The legal department reviewed the contract, while the finance department reviewed the annex.

The contrastive subjects and objects allow the repeated predicate to be reconstructed. This is gapping, treated fully on ellipsis and gapping. In an ordinary explanatory paragraph, repeat the verb whenever omission would create even brief uncertainty.

Правна служба није одобрила уговор, али је финансијска служба прихватила предложени план плаћања.

The legal department did not approve the contract, but the finance department accepted the proposed payment plan.

The second predicate is overt because both polarity and lexical content change. Compression is not a virtue when it hides the relation.

Connectives state the intended relation

Serbian connectives differ in semantics and register. Choosing one means committing to a relation, not merely decorating a new sentence.

RelationCommon devicesRegister and function
additionтакође, осим тогаneutral to formal; adds comparable information
contrast/concessionмеђутим, ипак, с друге странеneutral/formal; marks opposition or an unmet expectation
cause/resultзато, због тога, стогазато neutral; стога formal; introduces a consequence
inferenceдакле, према томеdraws a conclusion, not merely a chronological result
sequenceнајпре, затим, након тога, коначноorders stages
reformulationдругим речима, односноrestates or corrects; односно has additional precise uses

Подаци из две табеле се не подударају. Стога је неопходно поновити прорачун пре објављивања извештаја.

The data in the two tables do not match. It is therefore necessary to repeat the calculation before publishing the report. (formal)

Стога marks the second proposition as a consequence of the first. Дакле would more specifically present it as an inference or conclusion reached in the argument.

Рок је био кратак; ипак, сви тимови су доставили извештаје на време.

The deadline was short; nevertheless, all the teams submitted their reports on time.

Ипак encodes a defeated expectation: a short deadline normally makes timely delivery less likely. Plain међутим marks contrast without necessarily encoding the same concession.

Потребан нам је јединствен образац — другим речима, сви одсеци морају слати податке у истом формату.

We need a single form—in other words, all departments must send data in the same format.

Другим речима announces a reformulation. Односно can also refine or correct an expression—“or rather”—and can mean “respectively”; using it as a universal formal synonym for и creates unclear prose.

Punctuation reflects integration and rhythm. Sentence-initial parenthetical connectors commonly take a comma—Међутим, ...; Другим речима, ...—but not every adverb in these semantic groups is automatically detached in every position. Edit the actual construction, not a memorized list of “comma words.”

Tense and aspect help maintain the discourse timeline

Connectives cannot rescue an incoherent event sequence. A narrative normally establishes a reference time and uses aspect to distinguish background from advancing steps.

Док су истраживачи прикупљали узорке, лабораторија је припремала опрему. Након тога су узорци обележени и смештени у хладњачу.

While the researchers were collecting samples, the laboratory was preparing the equipment. After that, the samples were labeled and placed in cold storage.

The imperfectives maintain simultaneous background; након тога plus perfective passives advances the procedure. A sudden present tense could create a historical-present effect, but without a clear stylistic reason it would look like accidental switching.

💡
Use connectives and aspect together: the connective names the logical or temporal relation, while aspect shows whether each event is unfolding, repeated, or bounded.

A cohesive formal paragraph

Комисија је примила три жалбе на прелиминарне резултате. Две су се односиле на бодовање искуства, док је трећа указивала на грешку у збиру поена. Најпре су поново проверени сви обрасци. Том провером потврђена је рачунска грешка, али не и остали наводи. Због тога је један резултат исправљен, а преостале жалбе су одбијене. Одлука је затим достављена свим кандидатима.

The committee received three appeals concerning the preliminary results. Two concerned the scoring of experience, while the third pointed to an error in the point total. First, all forms were checked again. That check confirmed an arithmetic error but not the other claims. As a result, one result was corrected and the remaining appeals were rejected. The decision was then delivered to all candidates. (formal)

The paragraph introduces три жалбе, partitions them with две/трећа, summarizes a preceding action as том провером, marks a consequence with због тога, and closes the sequence with затим. The lexical chain changes form without losing its referents.

Practice

Task 1: Repair a reference chain

Write three sentences about two female colleagues reviewing one proposal. Begin with both full names, then use omission, a repeated name, or a role noun so that every later action has one unambiguous subject. Explain why an English-style repeated она is not the best repair.

Task 2: Choose the relation

Connect the same two claims once with ипак, once with стога, and once with другим речима. Adjust the second claim so that each connective expresses a truthful concession, result, or reformulation.

Common Mistakes

❌ Јелена је отворила извештај. Он је прочитао увод и проверила табеле.

Incorrect—the masculine pronoun and participle break the reference chain, and прочитао fails to agree with Jelena.

✅ Јелена је отворила извештај, прочитала увод и затим проверила табеле.

Jelena opened the report, read the introduction, and then checked the tables.

❌ Ана је разговарала са Милицом о пријави. Затим је послала исправљену верзију.

Ambiguous—two feminine referents are active, so the omitted subject of послала is not safely recoverable.

✅ Ана је разговарала са Милицом о пријави. Затим је Милица послала исправљену верзију.

Ana spoke with Milica about the application. Milica then sent the corrected version.

❌ У девет смо отворили седницу. Дакле, у десет смо направили паузу.

Poor connective for the intended sequence—these are successive scheduled events, not an inference or conclusion.

✅ У девет смо отворили седницу, а у десет смо направили паузу.

We opened the session at nine and took a break at ten.

❌ Тим је прикупио податке, односно написао извештај.

Misleading connective—односно implies reformulation or correction, although collecting data and writing a report are separate actions.

✅ Тим је прикупио податке, а затим је написао извештај.

The team collected the data and then wrote the report.

Key Takeaways

  • Maintain a stable referent with null subjects, but reintroduce it when another plausible referent intervenes.
  • Demonstratives can point to nouns or summarize whole propositions; vague то chains weaken cohesion.
  • Ellipsis requires recoverable, parallel structure and should not hide changes in polarity or predicate meaning.
  • Connectives distinguish addition, concession, result, inference, sequence, and reformulation.
  • Tense and aspect organize the discourse timeline while connectives state the relation between its stages.
