Serbian coordinates words, phrases, and clauses with connectors such as и “and,” или “or,” and contrastive а. A well-built list keeps its members grammatically parallel: the same preposition or verb must assign the right case to every item, modifiers must agree, and punctuation must reflect the list's structure.
Unlike English, Serbian normally does not add a comma before the final и in an ordinary list. It also permits natural ellipsis when repeated material is obvious.
Two Items: Use a Conjunction, Not a Comma
For two equal nouns, join them directly with и or или:
За доручак смо купили хлеб и јогурт.
We bought bread and yogurt for breakfast.
Можемо да кренемо аутобусом или возом.
We can leave by bus or by train.
There is normally no comma before и or или in these integrated pairs. Accusatives хлеб, јогурт share the verb купити; instrumentals аутобусом, возом share the means relation.
Three or More Items
Separate earlier items with commas and place и before the last item without an additional comma:
За пут су нам потребни пасоши, карте, лекови и пуњачи за телефоне.
For the trip we need passports, tickets, medicines, and phone chargers.
This is the ordinary Serbian list pattern A, B, C и D. The comma before English and in the translation does not license a Serbian comma before и.
A list can consist of adjectives modifying one noun:
Тражимо светао, миран и добро повезан стан.
We are looking for a bright, quiet, and well-connected apartment.
Masculine accusative светао, миран, повезан agrees with стан. Adverb добро modifies повезан and therefore does not itself inflect.
A list can also contain complete predicates:
У суботу ћемо очистити стан, спаковати књиге и однети кутије у нову кућу.
On Saturday we will clean the apartment, pack the books, and take the boxes to the new house.
Future auxiliary ћемо and subject ми are shared by three infinitives. Repeating ћемо before every verb would be grammatical only with special emphasis; neutral Serbian leaves the recoverable material out.
Shared Government and Parallel Case
One preposition can govern an entire coordinated phrase when every member expresses the same relation.
После посла сам разговарала са управником, мајстором и власницом стана.
After work I spoke with the building manager, the tradesman, and the apartment owner. (female speaker)
Са governs instrumental throughout: управником, мајстором, власницом. Mentally expanding са управником, са мајстором и са власницом confirms that sharing is valid.
The same works with a verb-governed list:
Комисија је прегледала пријаву, уговор и све приложене рачуне.
The committee reviewed the application, the contract, and all attached invoices.
All three objects are accusative. A nominative form in the final item would not become acceptable merely because the preposition or verb appeared earlier.
When two governors require different cases, do not force one shared form:
Сећам се нашег првог сусрета и понекад причам о њему.
I remember our first meeting and sometimes talk about it.
Сећати се requires genitive нашег првог сусрета; причати о requires о њему in the locative. The detailed repair strategies are on Case in Coordination.
Correlative Lists: Both, Either, Neither
Repeated connectors make the list exhaustive or emphatic.
| Pattern | Meaning | Case behavior |
|---|---|---|
| и ... и | both X and Y | each member keeps the case required by the clause |
| или ... или | either X or Y | parallel alternatives |
| ни ... ни | neither X nor Y | used with Serbian negative concord |
| не само ... него и | not only X but also Y | parallel emphasized members |
На радионицу су дошли и студенти и њихови професори.
Both students and their professors came to the workshop.
Или ћемо променити датум или ћемо резервисати другу салу.
Either we will change the date or we will book another room.
Није понео ни личну карту ни возачку дозволу.
He brought neither his ID card nor his driver's license.
Serbian keeps the finite verb negative with ни...ни. English neither may make another negative unnecessary; Serbian negative concord requires a negative finite form such as није or нисмо.
Позвали смо не само ауторе него и све преводиоце.
We invited not only the authors but all the translators as well.
The two accusative groups are parallel. Do not mix не само with a full clause and него и with a lone noun unless the intended structures genuinely match.
Coordinated Subjects and Agreement
Two nominative subjects joined by additive и normally form a plural controller:
Маја и Јован су припремили списак гостију.
Maja and Jovan prepared the guest list.
Auxiliary су is plural; mixed-gender human agreement gives masculine plural припремили. With two women, use feminine plural:
Маја и Јелена су припремиле списак гостију.
Maja and Jelena prepared the guest list.
More complex mixed-gender and postverbal patterns show genuine variation. For A2 production, put the coordinated subject before the predicate and use resolved plural agreement; the advanced options belong on Agreement with Coordinated Subjects.
Coordinating Clauses and Omitting Repetition
When subjects differ, а often organizes a parallel contrast:
Милица је наручила храну, а Лука пиће.
Milica ordered the food, while Luka ordered the drinks.
The second је наручио is omitted. Nominative Лука and accusative пиће make the parallel clear. Serbian uses this kind of ellipsis naturally instead of repeating every word.
When the second clause adds an unexpected fact, choose али and preserve its clitic domain:
Поруџбина је стигла, али нам нису донели пиће.
The order arrived, but they did not bring us the drinks.
The comma is required before али, and dative нам follows the connector near the beginning of its clause. Connector semantics are explained on и, а, and али.
A Listing Workflow
- Decide whether the members are words, phrases, predicates, or full clauses.
- Expand each member and verify case, preposition, and agreement.
- For an ordinary list, use A, B и C without a final Serbian “Oxford comma.”
- Use repeated connectors only when “both/either/neither/not only” is intended.
- Omit repeated subjects, auxiliaries, or verbs only when parallel structure makes them recoverable.
- If each clause has clitics, build each clause's early cluster separately.
A Short Connected List
За излет смо спаковали воду, сендвиче и резервну одећу, а Ана је понела мапу и прибор за прву помоћ. Нисмо заборавили ни батеријску лампу ни пуњач.
For the outing we packed water, sandwiches, and spare clothes, while Ana brought a map and a first-aid kit. We forgot neither the flashlight nor the charger.
The first clause lists three accusative objects and omits ми. А changes the subject to Ana. The final sentence uses negative concord with ни...ни.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Build a parallel list
Say that you spoke with Ana, Marko, and their manager. Use one shared са, put every name or noun phrase in the instrumental, and apply Serbian list punctuation.
Task 2: Expand and compress
Expand Ивана ће донети колаче, а Милош сокове into two complete clauses. Then shorten it again and explain which nominative and accusative forms make the ellipsis clear.
Common Mistakes
Adding an English-style final comma
❌ Купили смо јабуке, крушке, и шљиве.
Incorrect ordinary Serbian list punctuation—do not put a comma before final и.
✅ Купили смо јабуке, крушке и шљиве.
We bought apples, pears, and plums.
Leaving the last item outside the shared case
❌ Разговарао сам са Аном, Марком и њихов директор.
Incorrect—shared са requires instrumental in every item, including директором.
✅ Разговарао сам са Аном, Марком и њиховим директором.
I spoke with Ana, Marko, and their director. (male speaker)
Using singular agreement with an additive subject
❌ Јелена и Сања је припремила презентацију.
Incorrect—two subjects joined by и require plural auxiliary and feminine plural participle.
✅ Јелена и Сања су припремиле презентацију.
Jelena and Sanja prepared the presentation.
Copying English negation with ни...ни
❌ Добили смо ни адресу ни број телефона.
Incorrect—Serbian ни...ни requires a negative finite verb.
✅ Нисмо добили ни адресу ни број телефона.
We received neither the address nor the phone number.
Key Takeaways
- Ordinary Serbian lists use A, B и C, normally without a comma before final и.
- All members must satisfy the same case, preposition, and agreement relations unless material is repeated or recast.
- И...и, или...или, ни...ни, не само...него и add meanings beyond simple listing.
- Serbian naturally omits repeated material when parallel structure keeps the sentence unambiguous.
