Building Emphasis in a Sentence

Serbian builds emphasis by coordinating word order, case, particles, omission, and spoken prominence. The neutral baseline is often subject–verb–object, but a known object can move forward and a newly identified subject can appear late. Reordering does not change grammatical roles: case and agreement still identify the subject, object, and complements.

The right order therefore begins with a discourse question: what is already under discussion, and what is the answer, correction, or contrast?

This page turns the system from Topic, Focus, and Information Structure into a B1 production workflow.

Begin with the Neutral Sentence

Use neutral SVO when the whole event is new:

Мина је јутрос послала уговор клијенту.

Mina sent the contract to the client this morning. (neutral report)

Nominative Мина controls feminine послала; accusative уговор is the direct object; dative клијенту is the recipient. That structure is the reference point. Move a phrase only when context gives the movement a job.

If Mina is already the topic, Serbian can omit her:

Шта је Мина урадила? — Јутрос је послала уговор клијенту.

What did Mina do? — She sent the contract to the client this morning.

The verb form and question make the subject recoverable. Repeating она would be possible only if the speaker wanted contrast or clarification.

💡
First produce a grammatical neutral sentence. Then identify one discourse goal—topic continuity, new information, correction, limitation, or contrast—and change only what serves that goal.

Put the Requested Information Late

Serbian often places narrow focus toward the right edge. If the contract is known and the question is who sent it, put the given object first and the answer subject late:

Ко је послао уговор? — Уговор је клијенту послала Мина.

Who sent the contract? — Mina sent the contract to the client. (Mina is the focused answer)

Accusative уговор remains the object even though it begins the answer. Feminine послала agrees with final nominative Мина. English order cannot be used to identify roles here.

If the sender is known and the object is requested, neutral late-object order already supplies focus:

Шта је Мина послала клијенту? — Послала му је измењени уговор.

What did Mina send the client? — She sent him the revised contract.

The answer omits the known subject. Dative clitic му replaces клијенту, while final измењени уговор fills the missing information slot.

Late position is a strong tendency, not a mechanical rule. Spoken intonation can focus an earlier phrase, and explicit particles can override the usual given-before-new order.

Front a Topic or a Corrective Contrast

A fronted phrase can establish “as for X” or reject an alternative. Case must remain correct.

Овај рачун смо већ платили, а онај ћемо проверити сутра.

We have already paid this invoice, while we will check that one tomorrow.

The two accusative objects form parallel contrastive topics. First-person plural is clear from смо платили and ћемо проверити, so ми is unnecessary.

Марка сам позвала, а не Милоша.

I called Marko, not Miloš. (female speaker; corrective object focus)

Animate masculine accusatives Марка and Милоша prove that neither fronted name is the subject. Auxiliary сам follows the fronted focus in second position.

An explicit subject pronoun is useful when subjects contrast:

Ја ћу разговарати с управником, а ти провери документацију.

I'll speak with the manager, and you check the documentation.

Here ја and ти are not filler. They divide responsibilities. Without contrast, Serbian normally omits them.

Focus Particles Must Touch Their Scope

Particles such as само “only,” баш “precisely/particularly,” управо “exactly,” чак “even,” and тек “only/not until” identify the focused alternative. Their position changes meaning.

Само је Ана прочитала цео предлог.

Only Ana read the entire proposal.

Само limits the subject: nobody else completed the reading.

Ана је прочитала само закључак предлога.

Ana read only the conclusion of the proposal.

Now само limits the object. It does not claim that Ana merely read rather than doing something else.

Баш ту верзију су нам јуче вратили без коментара.

It was that exact version that they returned to us yesterday without comment.

The fronted focused object баш ту верзију provides the first unit; the cluster су нам follows it. Emphasis cannot license баш ту верзију нам су or movement of the clitics to the verb.

Тек после ручка ми је саопштила коначну одлуку.

She did not tell me the final decision until after lunch.

Тек focuses a delayed time boundary. The cluster ми је follows the whole opening phrase тек после ручка.

💡
Place a focus particle immediately before the constituent it limits. Moving само from the subject to the object changes the claim, even if every word remains grammatical.

Emphasis across Coordinated Clauses

Parallel clauses make contrasts explicit and allow repeated material to disappear:

Јелена је припремила текст, а Никола фотографије.

Jelena prepared the text, while Nikola prepared the photographs.

The omitted second је припремио is recovered from the first clause and the parallel cases. Nominative Никола contrasts with Јелена; accusative фотографије contrasts with текст.

You can emphasize the correction with не... него/већ:

Састанак није у среду, него у четвртак у десет.

The meeting isn't on Wednesday but on Thursday at ten.

This replaces one time with another. Али would signal an obstacle or contrary expectation, not a corrected value.

Subordinate-clause order also creates emphasis. A condition placed first becomes the frame for the whole assertion:

Ако баш ти преузмеш пројекат, ја ћу ти помоћи око буџета.

If you in particular take over the project, I'll help you with the budget.

The comma closes the fronted condition. Subject pronouns ти and ја are expressed because the speakers' contrasting responsibilities are central.

Clitics Are the Fixed Point

Full phrases move; enclitics remain early in their own clause. Use this workflow:

  1. Choose the opening topic, frame, or focus.
  2. Place the clitic cluster after that first unit.
  3. Keep auxiliary, dative, accusative, and се in their internal order.
  4. Arrange the remaining full phrases so the intended new or corrective information is clear.

О тој промени ми је тек јуче говорила директорка.

It was only yesterday that the director told me about that change.

Prepositional topic о тој промени opens the clause; ми је follows; delayed-time focus тек јуче precedes the predicate; final директорка can remain newly identified. Case and agreement prevent the order from becoming structurally free.

Avoid Routine English Clefts

English frequently says It was Ana who called. Serbian more naturally uses focus order, particles, and an explicit alternative:

Позвала је Ана, а не Ивана.

It was Ana who called, not Ivana.

The postverbal nominative supplies the corrected identity. A copied structure such as То је Ана која је позвала describes or identifies Ana in a different way and is not the neutral focus strategy.

A Short Emphatic Passage

Предлог смо послали још у понедељак, али одговор смо добили тек јутрос. Није нам га послала правна служба, него директорка лично. Управо њено одобрење смо чекали.

We sent the proposal back on Monday, but we did not receive the reply until this morning. It was not the legal department that sent it to us, but the director personally. Her approval was exactly what we were waiting for.

Fronted предлог/одговор create parallel topics; тек јутрос focuses delay; не... него corrects the sender; управо њено одобрење identifies the decisive object. Every cluster still occupies its clause's early position.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Answer three questions

Use one event with Сара / донети / кључеве to answer Шта се догодило?, Ко је донео кључеве?, and Шта је Сара донела? Choose neutral broad focus, late subject focus, and late object focus.

Task 2: Move the scope

Write two sentences with само: one meaning “only Marko called Ana,” the other “Marko called only Ana.” Then front the object in the second sentence and keep the auxiliary in second position.

Common Mistakes

Treating the first noun as the subject

❌ „Петра је позвала Марија“ значи да је Петар позвао Марију.

Incorrect analysis—Петра is animate accusative; nominative Марија and feminine позвала identify the subject.

✅ Петра је позвала Марија, а не Јелена.

It was Marija, not Jelena, who called Petar.

Repeating an uncontrasted pronoun

❌ Ја сам стигла кући и ја сам одмах укључила рачунар.

Incorrect neutral emphasis—the second ја adds no contrast and sounds unnecessarily repetitive.

✅ Стигла сам кући и одмах укључила рачунар.

I got home and immediately turned on the computer. (female speaker)

Moving a clitic with the focused verb

❌ Овај уговор директорка послала нам је јуче.

Incorrect neutral clitic placement—нам је belongs after the fronted object phrase.

✅ Овај уговор нам је директорка послала јуче.

The director sent us this contract yesterday.

Placing само after the intended object

❌ Позвала сам Невену само, а не цео тим.

Incorrect neutral scope placement for ‘only Nevena’—само should precede the object it limits.

✅ Позвала сам само Невену, а не цео тим.

I called only Nevena, not the whole team. (female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Neutral SVO is the baseline; reordering packages topic, new information, and correction.
  • Case and agreement preserve roles when an object moves first or a subject moves last.
  • Subject pronouns are normally omitted unless they contrast participants.
  • Focus particles stand beside their scope, while clitics remain early in the clause.
