An encyclopedia entry aims to identify, classify, date, and connect facts without sounding like an advertisement. Serbian achieves that through definitional present tense, passive event reporting, apposition, relative clauses, conventional date forms, and cohesive noun phrases that prevent both ambiguity and monotonous repetition.
Text status: The institution below is fictional and was created solely for grammar instruction. The entry is original; none of its dates or names should be treated as real-world reference information.
The complete entry
Центар за локалну историју (ЦЛИ) је јавна установа културе која прикупља, чува и описује грађу о развоју измишљеног града Равнице.
The Center for Local History (CLI) is a public cultural institution that collects, preserves, and catalogs material on the development of the fictional city of Ravnica.
Основан је 12. маја 2014. године, а за јавност је отворен у септембру исте године.
It was founded on May 12, 2014, and opened to the public in September of the same year.
Седиште Центра налази се у некадашњој железничкој станици, згради из 1926. године која је обновљена пре отварања установе.
The Center is housed in a former railway station, a building dating from 1926 that was renovated before the institution opened.
Збирку чине фотографије, мапе, звучни записи и приватна писма која су грађани уступили на чување.
The collection consists of photographs, maps, audio recordings, and private letters that residents have entrusted to the institution for safekeeping.
ЦЛИ је 2021. године покренуо дигитални каталог, помоћу којег корисници могу да претражују описе више од 8.000 јединица.
In 2021, CLI launched a digital catalog through which users can search the descriptions of more than 8,000 items.
Поред сталне поставке, Центар приређује тематске изложбе и објављује часопис „Локална прошлост“, чији је први број (бр. 1) објављен 2018. године.
In addition to its permanent exhibition, the Center organizes thematic exhibitions and publishes the journal Local Past, whose first issue (no. 1) appeared in 2018.
Милица Јовановић, прва управница Центра, уредила је почетну збирку; од 2019. године установом руководи историчар Марко Савић.
Milica Jovanović, the Center's first director, organized the initial collection; since 2019 the institution has been headed by historian Marko Savić.
The translation varies Center, CLI, and institution as English naturally does. Serbian variation is also controlled: the full proper name establishes the referent; Центар, ЦЛИ, and установа then resume it with different degrees of formality and specificity.
Sentence-by-sentence annotation
| Sentence | Grammar | Encyclopedic function |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The full name is followed by abbreviation (ЦЛИ). Neutral copular је supplies the classification. Relative која is nominative feminine because установа performs the three coordinated verbs. | The opening identifies and classifies the subject before giving detail. |
| 2 | Masculine passive participles основан, отворен agree with understood Центар. A specific date uses ordinal numeral plus genitive month: 12. маја 2014. године. | Two foundation milestones are ordered chronologically and linked by а. |
| 3 | Налазити се у + locative gives у ... станици. Apposition згради из 1926. године matches locative станици. Relative која is nominative subject of passive је обновљена. | The site is identified, dated, and connected to the institution's opening. |
| 4 | Marked object-first order puts accusative збирку before чине; the following plural list is the grammatical subject. Relative која is accusative plural because residents donated the letters. | The known topic “collection” precedes the new list of holdings. |
| 5 | Year phrase 2021. године is genitive time. Masculine покренуо agrees with acronym ЦЛИ as the Center. Genitive relative form којег follows помоћу and refers to masculine каталог. | A later development is added without disrupting the entry's chronology. |
| 6 | Поред governs genitive сталне поставке. The journal title takes Serbian quotation marks. Possessive relative чији agrees with masculine број; abbreviation бр. includes a period. | The scope expands from holdings to public and publishing activity. |
| 7 | Apposition прва управница Центра is nominative with Милица Јовановић. Instrumental установом follows руководити; nominative историчар Марко Савић is the present subject. | Leadership history closes the entry with a past-to-present transition. |
Definitions and neutral classification
The first sentence follows name + copula + class + differentiating relative clause. This is more informative than promotional adjectives such as јединствен, изузетан, which require evidence and usually do not belong in a neutral entry.
Архивска јединица јесте документ или група докумената који се описују као целина.
An archival unit is a document or group of documents described as a whole.
Emphatic јесте is useful in a definition or correction; ordinary је would also be grammatical. Do not sprinkle јесте into every sentence to make the prose sound formal.
Dates: year, month, and exact day
Serbian writes ordinal date numbers with a period. Month names are lowercase and take genitive after the day number.
| Time reference | Form |
|---|---|
| year only |
|
| month and year | у септембру 2014. године |
| exact date |
|
| since a year | од 2019. године |
Дигитална читаоница отворена је 3. фебруара 2022. године.
The digital reading room opened on February 3, 2022.
The passive form highlights the institution and date; an active version should name the responsible body if that matters.
Apposition inherits case
Apposition renames the same referent and normally matches its case. The location sentence has locative у станици, згради, while the director sentence has nominative Милица Јовановић, прва управница.
Изложба је одржана у Павиљону 2, највећем простору комплекса.
The exhibition was held in Pavilion 2, the largest space in the complex.
Both Павиљону 2 and највећем простору are locative after у. English apposition has little visible case marking, so English speakers often leave the Serbian explanation in nominative.
Relative forms follow their clause role
Compare the three relatives in the entry:
- установа која прикупља — nominative subject;
- писма која су грађани уступили — accusative plural object, formally identical to neuter/plural nominative here;
- каталог, помоћу којег... — genitive after compound preposition помоћу.
Истраживачи користе каталог чији су описи јавно доступни.
Researchers use a catalog whose descriptions are publicly available.
Possessive relative чији agrees with plural описи, while its antecedent is singular каталог. The relationship, not simple adjacent-noun copying, controls the form.
Abbreviations and later reference
Introduce an unfamiliar abbreviation after the full name: Центар за локалну историју (ЦЛИ). Later bare ЦЛИ is possible once reference is secure. Conventional shortened forms such as бр. retain their required punctuation.
Центар за урбану екологију (ЦУЕ) објавио је извештај; ЦУЕ ће податке ажурирати једном годишње.
The Center for Urban Ecology (CUE) published a report; CUE will update the data once a year.
Do not invent an acronym if it appears only once. Abbreviation should reduce repetition, not force the reader to decode another label.
For punctuation and case behavior beyond this entry, see abbreviations and symbols.
Formal cohesion without repetition
The entry rotates among Центар, ЦЛИ, and установа, but only after the full name is clear. Исте године, поред..., од 2019. године give temporal and additive connections. Pronouns are used only when their antecedents are secure.
Збирка је проширена 2020. године. Том приликом Центар је преузео више од сто приватних писама.
The collection was expanded in 2020. On that occasion, the Center acquired more than one hundred private letters.
Том приликом avoids a vague “then”: it explicitly links the acquisition to the expansion event.
Register and editorial neutrality
The style is formal/reference. Passive clauses are appropriate when the event and date matter more than the actor. The marked object-first sentence Збирку чине... follows a known-topic-to-new-list pattern and is not “free” word order.
The fictional status matters. In a real entry, every date, institutional label, personal name, and publication fact must be verified. Neutral grammar cannot turn invented content into a reliable reference.
Reuse the passage
Task 1: Build an opening definition
Invent a clearly labeled fictional research center. Give its full name, introduce one abbreviation, classify it, and add a relative clause describing its function.
Task 2: Add a three-date chronology
Use one exact date, one month-and-year phrase, and one од + year phrase. Keep month capitalization and cases correct.
Task 3: Decline an apposition
Write the same building plus apposition in nominative, locative after у, and genitive after из. Make both phrases change case together.
Common Mistakes
Capitalizing the month in a date
❌ Центар је основан 12. Маја 2014. године.
Incorrect—Serbian month names are lowercase.
✅ Центар је основан 12. маја 2014. године.
The Center was founded on May 12, 2014.
Leaving apposition in nominative
❌ Збирка се чува у депоу, посебна просторија без прозора.
Incorrect—the apposition must match locative депоу.
✅ Збирка се чува у депоу, посебној просторији без прозора.
The collection is kept in the repository, a special windowless room.
Choosing a relative form from the antecedent's main-clause case
❌ Говоримо о збирци коју садржи старе мапе.
Incorrect—inside the relative clause, the collection is the subject, so use која.
✅ Говоримо о збирци која садржи старе мапе града.
We are talking about a collection that contains old city maps.
Omitting the period in a conventional abbreviation
❌ Часопис је покренут бр 1 из 2018. године.
Incorrect punctuation and phrasing—бр. takes a period, and the issue label should be integrated clearly.
✅ Први број часописа (бр. 1) објављен је 2018. године.
The first issue of the journal (no. 1) was published in 2018.
