Abbreviations, Initials, and Symbols

Serbian abbreviations belong to several different systems. A period in проф. (prof.) means that a word has been cut short; the absence of a period in др (dr) reflects a conventional contraction; and kg is an international measurement symbol, not an ordinary Serbian abbreviation at all. Treating all three alike produces exactly the errors that English speakers tend to make.

Both Serbian scripts are standard. Ordinary Serbian abbreviations can therefore appear in Cyrillic or Latin, while international symbols often remain Latin even inside Cyrillic text. (formal/technical) Acronyms and unit symbols are especially common in administration, news, science, and signs; (neutral) abbreviations such as нпр. and итд. occur in everyday prose as well. For the surrounding sentence marks, see Punctuation in Serbian.

Common abbreviations in both scripts

The punctuation does not change when the script changes. Each Cyrillic form below converts exactly into the Latin form beside it.

The first group uses a final period because the written form stops before the full word or phrase ends. Conventional contractions such as др, мр, and гђа include the final letter of the full word and are written without a period. This is a spelling convention, not something a learner can always reconstruct by logic; memorize the high-frequency forms as complete units.

Састанак је у петак, тј. 12. маја.

The meeting is on Friday, that is, May 12.

Понесите личну карту, пасош и сл.

Bring an identity card, a passport, and similar documents.

Ординација др Јовановић је на другом спрату.

Dr Jovanović's office is on the second floor.

Here и сл. (i sl., “and similar”) illustrates a multiword abbreviation. Abbreviations are separated internally according to their established form; do not invent an English-style string of capital letters for an ordinary Serbian phrase.

💡
A period belongs to the abbreviation, but it can also serve as the sentence's closing period. Write Купили смо хлеб, млеко итд. with one final period, never итд..

Initialisms and acronyms

Names of organizations are commonly shortened to capital letters without periods. The choice of script follows the surrounding text and the established identity of the organization: Радио-телевизија Србије becomes РТС, and its exact Latin conversion is RTS. Српска академија наука и уметности becomes САНУ / SANU. The two scripts encode the same Serbian name; Latin is not an informal spelling of Cyrillic.

CyrillicLatinExpanded formUsual reading
РТСRTSРадио-телевизија Србијеletter by letter: ер-те-ес
МУПMUPМинистарство унутрашњих пословаas a word: муп
САНУSANUСрпска академија наука и уметностиas a word: сану
ЕУEUЕвропска унијаletter by letter: е-у
НАТОNATOСеверноатлантски савезas a word: нато

Some strings are pronounceable as words, while others are read as letter names. Real usage determines the reading; visual form alone is only a guide.

Вечерас преносе утакмицу на РТС-у.

They're broadcasting the match on RTS tonight.

Документ је предат МУП-у јуче ујутру.

The document was submitted to the Ministry of Internal Affairs yesterday morning.

When an all-capital abbreviation takes a visible case ending, standard spelling normally joins the lowercase ending with a hyphen: РТС-у / RTS-u, МУП-а / MUP-a. The ending makes Serbian case grammar visible without pretending that the abbreviation itself is an ordinary lowercase stem. The grammatical gender comes from usage and often from the head noun in the expanded name.

By contrast, a conventional title such as др is read as the full word. It remains др in writing while the expanded phrase bears the case: са др Петровићем is read as са доктором Петровићем. Do not write an invented form such as др-ом.

Разговарала сам са др Петровићем после прегледа.

I spoke with Dr Petrović after the examination.

Personal initials

Personal initials take periods. In careful (neutral/formal) typography, put a space after each initial: И. А. Андрић / I. A. Andrić. The initial stays unchanged when the name is declined; the surname carries the case ending.

Читамо приповетку И. Андрића за понедељак.

We're reading a short story by I. Andrić for Monday.

Улица Ј. Ј. Змаја је затворена због радова.

J. J. Zmaj Street is closed because of roadworks.

The Latin sequence J. J. Zmaj is not English: Serbian j has the value heard in English yes. Exact conversion gives Ј. Ј. Змај. Russian habits do not apply: Serbian uses ј, not й, for this letter.

Measurement and other international symbols

International measurement symbols are (technical, standard) forms. They are written without periods, do not take plural endings, and normally remain in Latin script in Cyrillic text. Leave a space between the number and the unit symbol: 5 km, 2 kg, 20 °C. Capitalization is meaningful: m is metre, while M is the SI prefix mega-. Do not “translate” km into Cyrillic lookalikes.

Written formRead aloud in contextMeaning
1 kmједан километарone kilometre
2 kmдва километраtwo kilometres
5 kmпет километараfive kilometres
1,5 lједан и по литарone and a half litres
20 °Cдвадесет степени Целзијусаtwenty degrees Celsius

Село је удаљено 5 km од главног пута.

The village is five kilometres from the main road.

За овај рецепт треба 200 g брашна и 1 l млека.

This recipe calls for 200 grams of flour and one litre of milk.

The written symbol stays fixed, but the spoken unit takes the form required by the number. Serbian numeral grammar is therefore present in speech even when no ending is visible on the page.

💡
Ask what kind of shortened form you are looking at. Ordinary abbreviation: perhaps a period. Contracted title: often no period. Organization name: capitals, usually no periods. International unit: fixed Latin symbol, no period or case ending.

Reading abbreviated forms aloud

There are three main strategies:

  1. Expand ordinary abbreviations: нпр. is read на пример; итд. is read и тако даље.
  2. Read initialisms by Serbian letter names: РТС is ер-те-ес.
  3. Read lexical acronyms as words: НАТО is нато.

In all three cases, read according to Serbian pronunciation, not the names of English letters. (informal) Speakers may occasionally shorten or reshape very familiar institutional names in conversation, but those colloquial pronunciations do not change the standard written form.

У поруци пише „нпр. у петак“, а то читамо „на пример у петак“.

The message says ‘e.g. on Friday,’ and we read that aloud as ‘for example on Friday.’

Common Mistakes

1. Adding a period to a contraction that conventionally has none.

❌ Имам преглед код др. Илића.

Incorrect — the conventional contraction др is written without a period.

✅ Имам преглед код др Илића.

I have an appointment with Dr Ilić.

2. Writing two periods at the end of a sentence.

❌ Треба купити хлеб, сир, јогурт итд..

Incorrect — the abbreviation's period also closes the sentence.

✅ Треба купити хлеб, сир, јогурт итд. То је цео списак.

We need to buy bread, cheese, yogurt, and so on. That's the whole list.

3. Attaching a case ending directly to an all-capital abbreviation.

❌ Гледали смо интервју на РТСу.

Incorrect — the case ending after the all-capital abbreviation needs a hyphen.

✅ Гледали смо интервју на РТС-у.

We watched the interview on RTS.

4. Cyrillicizing international unit symbols.

❌ До центра има још 3 км.

Incorrect in technical notation — the international symbol is Latin km, not Cyrillic км.

✅ До центра има још 3 km.

It's another three kilometres to the centre.

5. Dropping a Serbian Latin diacritic inside a name or title.

❌ Порука је за g. Djordjevića.

Incorrect — mixed script and Dj do not correctly represent Serbian ђ/đ.

✅ Порука је за г. Ђорђевића.

The message is for Mr Đorđević.

Exact conversion would give Latin Poruka je za g. Đorđevića. The mappings ђ/đ, ћ/ć, ч/č, ж/ž, ш/š, љ/lj, њ/nj, and џ/dž must survive even in compact forms.

Key Takeaways

  • Periods mark many clipped abbreviations, but established contractions such as др/dr have none.
  • Initials take periods; organizational abbreviations normally do not.
  • A case ending after an all-capital abbreviation is lowercase and hyphenated: РТС-у / RTS-u.
  • SI symbols stay fixed, period-free, and usually Latin even in Cyrillic text.
  • Full literacy means recognizing how the same abbreviation works in both standard scripts and knowing how it is actually read aloud.
