In the City: Places and Services

Finding a service in a Serbian city requires more than a list of buildings. The place after где је appears in nominative, a destination after у/на normally appears in accusative, and the place where a service happens appears in locative. Learn апотека — у апотеку — у апотеци as one practical set.

This page concentrates on urban places and services. For street-by-street route language, continue with Directions and Travel.

Essential places

Place/serviceDestinationLocation
банкау банкуу банци
апотекау апотекуу апотеци
поштау поштуу пошти
полицијска станицау полицијску станицуу полицијској станици
туристички информативни центару туристички информативни центару туристичком информативном центру
пијацана пијацуна пијаци
главни тргна главни тргна главном тргу

У is common with institutions and enclosed services; на is conventional with places such as пијаца and трг. The choice must be learned with the noun; the у versus на guide gives the larger decision system.

Прво идем у банку, а онда се налазимо на главном тргу.

First I'm going to the bank, and then we're meeting in the main square.

У пошти можете да пошаљете пакет, а маркице се купују на шалтеру.

At the post office you can send a parcel, and stamps are bought at the counter.

The first example has two destinations/locations; the second has locative у пошти and на шалтеру because the actions happen there.

Asking where a service is

The safest neutral opening with a stranger is Извините plus a polite question.

Извините, где је најближа апотека?

Excuse me, where is the nearest pharmacy?

Можете ли да ми кажете где се налази туристички информативни центар?

Could you tell me where the tourist information center is?

After где је, the place is the nominative subject: најближа апотека, not accusative најближу апотеку. Где се налази...? is slightly fuller and works well in polite service encounters.

To ask whether a service exists nearby, use има ли or да ли има with an appropriate quantity/existential phrase:

Да ли у близини има неки банкомат који ради?

Is there a working ATM nearby?

Masculine неки банкомат is a natural indefinite object in this existential frame. For a direct need, треба ми is often simpler:

Треба ми јавни тоалет; знате ли где је?

I need a public restroom; do you know where one is?

💡
Use где је + nominative to identify a place, but како да стигнем до + genitive when you need the route. Those are different questions.

Asking what you can do there

Где могу да + present? asks where a service is available. Могу agrees with the speaker, while the second verb remains present after да.

Где могу да подигнем новац и променим евре у динаре?

Where can I withdraw money and exchange euros for dinars?

Где могу да купим градску мапу и допуним кредит на телефону?

Where can I buy a city map and top up my phone credit?

At the specific institution, say what you need with a direct object or да-clause:

Желим да пошаљем овај пакет препоручено, молим вас.

I'd like to send this parcel by registered mail, please.

Желим is grammatical but can sound firm. In a service encounter, желео/желела бих is softer; concise једну маркицу, молим вас is also polite.

Opening hours and availability

Ask Када ради...? for opening hours or До када радите? directly to staff. Serbian commonly says an institution ради “works/is open.”

До када ради музеј суботом?

Until what time is the museum open on Saturdays?

Извините, да ли данас радите до осам?

Excuse me, are you open until eight today? (polite/plural)

Signs use отворено and затворено as impersonal/predicative forms. Радно време means opening/business hours.

На вратима пише да је радно време од девет до седам, али је шалтер тренутно затворен.

The door says the opening hours are from nine to seven, but the counter is currently closed.

Landmarks without a full route

When someone locates a service, high-frequency landmark phrases include поред + genitive, преко пута + genitive, иза + genitive, and код + genitive.

Банкомат је поред улаза у супермаркет, преко пута банке.

The ATM is beside the supermarket entrance, across from the bank.

Јавни тоалет је иза киоска, код степеништа за гаражу.

The public restroom is behind the kiosk, by the stairs to the garage.

These phrases locate the service. A complete route adds imperatives and path expressions, which belong on the directions page.

Formal and informal interaction

With staff or an unfamiliar adult, use plural/polite можете, знате, радите and извините. With a friend, use можеш, знаш.

Знаш ли где у овом крају има добра пекара?

Do you know where there is a good bakery in this neighborhood? (informal singular)

Do not combine можеш with кажете in one request. The relationship must stay consistent through every verb and pronoun.

Situational dialogue

— Извините, где је најближа пошта? — У следећој улици, поред банке. — Да ли ради поподне? — Ради до седам. — Хвала. А где могу да купим коверту? — У пошти, на првом шалтеру. — Хвала вам много.

— Excuse me, where is the nearest post office? — On the next street, beside the bank. — Is it open in the afternoon? — It's open until seven. — Thank you. And where can I buy an envelope? — At the post office, at the first counter. — Thank you very much.

The dialogue reuses nominative after где је, location phrases, institutional ради, and polite вам.

Practice

Task 1: Build a city-place set

Апотека је поред банке; идем у апотеку; лек купујем у апотеци.

The pharmacy is beside the bank; I'm going to the pharmacy; I buy medicine at the pharmacy. Answer: nominative, accusative destination, locative location.

Task 2: Ask for one service two ways

Где је најближи банкомат? — Где могу да подигнем новац?

Where is the nearest ATM? — Where can I withdraw money? The first asks for a place; the second asks where an action is possible.

Common Mistakes

Using accusative after где је

❌ Где је најближу апотеку?

Incorrect—the place after где је is the nominative subject: најближа апотека.

✅ Где је најближа апотека која ради ноћу?

Where is the nearest pharmacy that is open at night?

Confusing destination and location

❌ Сада сам у банку и чекам ред.

Incorrect—an existing location requires locative у банци.

✅ Сада сам у банци и чекам ред на шалтеру.

I'm at the bank now, waiting in line at the counter.

Choosing на mechanically

❌ После посла идем на банку да подигнем новац.

Incorrect conventional preposition—банка takes у for an ordinary destination.

✅ После посла идем у банку да подигнем новац.

After work, I'm going to the bank to withdraw money.

Mixing ти and ви

❌ Извините, можеш ли да ми кажете радно време?

Incorrect person agreement—можеш is second-person singular, while кажете is second-person plural.

✅ Извините, можете ли да ми кажете радно време музеја?

Excuse me, could you tell me the museum's opening hours?
