This is an ordered route through the C1 material, not a second explanation of the constructions on the linked pages. Work through the page slugs in sequence, complete each milestone before advancing, and keep the same portfolio texts for the two review loops. The path deliberately moves from phrase-building resources to discourse choices: later work assumes that earlier nominalization, reference, voice, and extraction decisions are already available.
C1 mastery is not measured by sentence length or rare vocabulary. The practical target is processing density with recoverability: a reader should be able to identify agency, scope, reference, and stance even when the prose is compressed. Socially, your wording must also sustain one relationship and one register instead of drifting whenever the sentence becomes difficult.
Cluster 1: build the nominalization network
Read these in order. Formation precedes interpretation, and interpretation precedes decisions about productivity and register.

nominals/nominalization - Event, Process, and Result Nouns —
nominals/event-nouns - peN-: Formation and Allomorphy —

Milestone 1
Write a 180–220-word (academic) project summary in two versions: one with explicit event clauses and one with a controlled set of nominalizations. Highlight every form whose interpretation depends on the surrounding verb or noun. Your second version must remain traceable to actors and events.
Peningkatan kadar penyertaan itu berkait dengan penyediaan pengangkutan awam yang lebih kerap.
The increase in the participation rate is associated with the provision of more frequent public transport. (academic milestone sentence)
Pass when a reader can answer siapa melakukan apa? without consulting the first version and when you can justify each nominal form by reference to pages 1–13.
Cluster 2: extraction, reference, and information flow
The subject and transitivity diagnostics come before relative-clause and extraction work. Information structure follows those structural prerequisites.

syntax-relatives/oblique-relatives - Information Structure and Grammar —
syntax-relatives/information-structure - yang Clefts and Focus Constructions —
clause-linking/clefts - Reference Chains Across a Text —
social-reference/chains
Milestone 2
Record a two-minute (careful spoken) account of a workplace problem, then submit a written transcript. Include two relative clauses and a reference chain across at least five clauses. Mark every place where an overt noun, pronoun, -nya, gap, or omitted argument identifies a participant.
Pegawai yang kami hubungi semalam sudah menghantar laporan yang diminta oleh pengurus itu.
The officer whom we contacted yesterday has sent the report requested by that manager. (careful spoken milestone sentence)
Pass when another learner can reconstruct all participants without inventing a referent and when your analysis cites pages 14–20 rather than an English translation.
Cluster 3: control scope in dense expository prose
- Adverb Scope and Ambiguity —
adverbials/scope - Word-Order Ambiguities —
ordering/ambiguity - Bahasa Melayu Baku in Formal Writing —
registers/formal-written - Academic Argument Signposting —
text-cohesion/academic - Academic Malaysian Malay —
registers/academic - Public Notice: Rules in a Strata Residence —
readings/public-notice - Academic Abstract: Multilingualism in Malaysia —
readings/abstract
Milestone 3
Produce a 250–300-word (academic) abstract and a 180–220-word (formal) administrative notice based on the same set of facts. Underline scope-bearing expressions, circle every actor that remains explicit, and annotate every place where the two genres require different wording.
Hanya peserta yang telah mengesahkan kehadiran akan menerima pautan mesyuarat.
Only participants who have confirmed attendance will receive the meeting link. (formal milestone sentence; verify the scope of hanya)
Berdasarkan dapatan tersebut, kajian ini mencadangkan peluasan tempoh pengumpulan data.
On the basis of those findings, this study proposes extending the data-collection period. (academic milestone sentence)
Pass only if a reader gives the intended interpretation to every hanya, negator, modal, and attachment. Long sentences that require repair do not pass.
Cluster 4: literary compression without lost links
- Ellipsis and Gapping in Complex Sentences —
clause-linking/ellipsis-gapping - Rhetorical Parallelism and Balanced Clauses —
clause-linking/parallelism - Literary Compression and Clause Chaining —
clause-linking/literary-compression - Literary Malay: Voice, Rhythm, and Layering —
registers/literary - Literary Prose: Memory across a Monsoon Evening —
readings/literary
Milestone 4
Write 180–240 words of (literary) prose, then a fully expanded paraphrase in neutral prose. Draw arrows from each omitted or compressed element to its recoverable source.
Hujan reda; jalan masih berkilat, halaman masih menyimpan bau tanah.
The rain subsided; the road still gleamed, the yard still held the smell of earth. (literary milestone sentence)
Dia membuka surat itu, membaca baris pertama, lalu terdiam.
She opened the letter, read the first line, then fell silent. (literary milestone sentence)
Pass when the compressed version has a deliberate rhythm and the expanded version confirms that no participant or temporal link was accidentally lost.
Cluster 5: contact grammar, irony, and register editing

interaction/common-ground - Age, Rank, and Institutional Hierarchy —

Milestone 5
Create a three-part portfolio from one scenario: a 12-turn interaction from one documented Malaysian variety (informal), a neutral written account, and a 150-word (formal) email. Annotate regional, contact-induced, ironic, and common-ground cues; do not merely label all nonformal wording “slang.”
Baguslah—mesyuarat pukul sembilan, pautan dihantar pukul sembilan suku.
Great—the meeting is at nine, and the link gets sent at quarter past nine. (informal; ironic milestone line)
Sehubungan dengan kelewatan tersebut, pihak kami memohon agar pautan mesyuarat diedarkan lebih awal.
In view of that delay, we request that the meeting link be circulated earlier. (formal milestone rewrite)
Pass when the ironic line is interpretable from context, the regional features are attributed rather than generalized to all Malaysians, and the formal version contains no accidental conversational particles.
Review loop 1: recoverability under compression
Return to pages 1, 12–20, 21–22, and 28–30. Re-edit the abstract and literary piece without adding words. For every nominalization, extraction, omission, and scope-bearing item, ask a peer to identify the actor, referent, attachment, and intended scope. Any disagreement triggers a return to the exact prerequisite page, followed by another revision.
Pelaksanaan cadangan itu hanya akan dipertimbangkan selepas kesannya dinilai.
Implementation of the proposal will be considered only after its effects are evaluated. (formal review sentence)
The reviewer must state what hanya scopes over and what -nya refers to. If that cannot be answered consistently, density has outrun recoverability.
Review loop 2: social nuance and stylistic consistency
Return to pages 18–20 and 33–40. Exchange audiences: revise the administrative notice for colleagues in a group chat (informal), then revise the original dialogue for a public incident report (formal). Preserve the facts but change stance, reference, common-ground assumptions, and interactional force.
Saya rasa pautan itu elok dihantar awal sikit, kan?
I think it would be good to send the link a little earlier, right? (informal review version)
Complete the path only when you can justify each retained marked choice for its audience. A sentence is not C1 merely because it is long, and a word is not socially appropriate merely because it is rare.
Common Mistakes
1. Hiding agency to make a sentence look academic
❌ Penilaian telah dibuat dan keputusan telah dipersetujui.
Weak milestone evidence—the relevant evaluators and decision-makers cannot be recovered.
✅ Jawatankuasa penilai telah meneliti permohonan itu dan bersetuju untuk meluluskannya.
The evaluation committee reviewed the application and agreed to approve it. (formal)
2. Measuring proficiency by length rather than scope control
❌ Hanya pihak kami mungkin tidak akan menyemak semula semua permohonan itu.
Unsuccessful milestone sentence—the intended scope of hanya, mungkin, and tidak is not made recoverable.
✅ Pihak kami mungkin tidak akan menyemak semua permohonan itu sekali lagi; hanya kes rayuan akan dinilai semula.
We may not check all those applications again; only appeal cases will be reassessed. (formal)
3. Mixing institutional framing with intimate colloquial wording
❌ Sehubungan itu, korang hantar borang ni cepatlah.
Register clash—the administrative linker, familiar pronoun, reduced demonstrative, and particle do not form one controlled voice.
✅ Sehubungan itu, semua pemohon diminta mengemukakan borang ini dengan segera.
Accordingly, all applicants are requested to submit this form immediately. (formal)
4. Treating an ironic line as context-free vocabulary
❌ Baguslah.
Insufficient milestone evidence—without context or prosody, the line does not establish whether the evaluation is sincere or ironic.
✅ Baguslah—janji pukul dua, pukul tiga baru muncul.
Great—you promised two o'clock and only showed up at three. (informal; ironic)
Completion standard
Your final C1 portfolio contains at least 1,000 polished written words, the two-minute recording and transcript, annotations for every milestone, and both review-loop revisions. It passes when readers recover the intended analysis and social stance—not when the work merely contains the longest sentences or the least familiar vocabulary.
Key Takeaways
- Follow all 40 exact slugs in order and complete each cluster milestone before advancing.
- Meet the minimum production goal, then use both review loops to revisit structural and social prerequisites.
- Judge C1 work by recoverable agency, scope, reference, stance, and register—not length or rarity.
