peN-...-an: Meanings and Derivational Network in Malaysian Malay

The circumfix peN-...-an often turns an action into something that discourse can name, classify, measure, regulate, or evaluate. Its derivatives may denote an unfolding process, an organized activity, a conventional result, or a whole institutional domain. The unifying move is event nominalization: an event is packaged as a noun without necessarily erasing the participants conceptually involved in it.

This page maps the semantic network. The formation page handles nasal allomorphy and deletion; the usage page explains participant expression, lexical restrictions, and register. The notation peN-...-an belongs to analysis; actual forms such as pembangunan and pengumuman are written solid.

Four core families

The base supplies an event or property, but the established derivative selects one or more conventional perspectives on it.

FamilyActor-oriented clauseNominal perspectives
bangun → membangunkan → pembangunandevelop something; bring something into developmentdevelopment process, development activity, developed sector
ajar → mengajar → pengajaranteach someone/somethingteaching process, instruction, lesson or moral
teliti → meneliti → penelitianexamine carefullyclose examination, investigation
umum → mengumumkan → pengumumanannounce somethingact of announcing, announcement as communicative result

Kerajaan negeri sedang membangunkan kawasan perindustrian baharu.

The state government is developing a new industrial area. (formal)

Pembangunan kawasan perindustrian itu dijangka siap pada tahun 2030.

Development of the industrial area is expected to be completed in 2030. (formal)

The first sentence asserts an event and gives it tense-aspect context through sedang. The second turns that event into the noun phrase pembangunan kawasan perindustrian itu, which can become the subject of another predicate. English does something similar with development, but Malay nominalizations preserve a more systematic link to the verb family.

💡
When reading a peN-...-an noun, mentally unpack it into a likely clause. The noun pembangunan kawasan itu evokes “someone develops that area,” even when the developer is not named.

Processes viewed over time

The most productive reading profiles an event as a process with duration, stages, progress, or completion. Pembangunan, pembinaan “construction,” pemulihan “recovery/restoration,” and pemprosesan “processing” readily combine with verbs and modifiers that measure their course.

Proses pemulihan sungai itu memerlukan kerjasama penduduk setempat.

The river restoration process requires cooperation from local residents. (formal)

Pemprosesan data belum selesai kerana pelayan utama tergendala.

The data processing has not finished because the main server is down. (formal/technical)

The noun does not simply mean “the fact that an action happened.” It allows the event to be inspected from outside as a bounded or extended entity. This is especially valuable in administrative, technical, and academic prose, where writers discuss phases, methods, costs, and outcomes.

Organized activities and practices

A recurrent process can be conventionalized as an organized activity. Pengajaran can mean the practice or delivery of teaching; penyelidikan means research; pengurusan can mean management as an activity or professional field; pengangkutan names transport as an organized system or activity.

Pengajaran dalam talian memerlukan bahan yang mudah dicapai oleh pelajar.

Online teaching requires materials that students can access easily. (formal/academic)

Pengurusan sisa pepejal menjadi cabaran utama bagi bandar yang pesat membangun.

Solid-waste management is becoming a major challenge for rapidly developing cities. (formal)

These words can be more abstract than one occurrence of the corresponding verb. Pengajaran dalam talian may describe a pedagogical mode across a semester, not a single act by one teacher. English often uses -ing, -tion, or a separate noun; Malay uses a derivational family, but the exact English suffix remains unpredictable.

Results that remain linked to an event

Some derivatives shift from the action to a result produced by it. Pengumuman may mean the act of announcing, but it also means the announcement itself—the message that people can read, hear, repeat, or miss. Pengajaran can denote the lesson or moral extracted from an experience, not only the activity of teaching.

Saya tidak dengar pengumuman terakhir di stesen tadi.

I didn't hear the final announcement at the station just now.

Pengajaran daripada kejadian itu ialah kepentingan menyimpan salinan sandaran.

The lesson from that incident is the importance of keeping a backup copy.

This action-to-result shift is a common path of lexicalization. Context disambiguates it: a pengumuman that berlangsung selama sepuluh minit is an announcing event, while one that ditampal pada pintu is a message or document. Not every peN-...-an noun develops both readings, so the pattern helps explain polysemy but does not predict it without lexical evidence.

💡
Test an ambiguous noun with its surrounding predicates. Duration language favours a process; verbs such as baca, dengar, and tampal favour a communicative result.

Domains, systems, and institutional life

An organized activity can expand metonymically into the domain responsible for it. Pendidikan can denote education as a process, a social system, or an institutional sector. Pentadbiran ranges from administration as an activity to the administrative body or administration in office. Pengangkutan awam names public transport as a system, not merely one act of transporting.

Kementerian sedang mengkaji semula dasar pendidikan negara.

The ministry is reviewing the national education policy. (formal)

Pentadbiran universiti akan mengeluarkan garis panduan baharu.

The university administration will issue new guidelines. (formal)

English may switch from an event noun (administration) to a collective entity (the administration) without changing form. Malay can make the same metonymic shift. The institutional reading is lexical and context-sensitive, not a separate meaning automatically supplied by -an.

Participants remain conceptually active

Nominalization changes category, but it need not destroy the event's participant structure. In pengumuman keputusan oleh pengerusi, keputusan is what was announced and pengerusi is the announcer. In pengajaran bahasa Melayu kepada pelajar dewasa, the language is the content and the adults are recipients or learners.

Pengumuman keputusan oleh pengerusi menamatkan spekulasi selama seminggu.

The chairperson's announcement of the decision ended a week of speculation. (formal)

Pengajaran bahasa Melayu kepada pekerja asing itu dijalankan pada waktu malam.

The teaching of Malay to the foreign workers is conducted at night. (formal)

This makes peN-...-an nouns semantically “verb-like” even while their grammar is nominal. They can take demonstratives, possessors, and prepositional dependents as nouns do, but their meanings invite questions such as who acted, what was affected, and who received the result. English gerunds also retain arguments, yet English allows verbal patterns such as teaching the students Malay more directly. Malay normally reorganizes the participants into a noun phrase.

Lexicalization prevents a one-suffix translation

The four core families already show why there is no fixed gloss. Pembangunan is often development, pengajaran may be teaching, instruction, or lesson, penelitian is careful examination or investigation, and pengumuman may be announcing or announcement. The circumfix contributes a nominalizing perspective, not one English suffix.

There is also a crucial contrast with bare peN- agent nouns. Pengajar is an instructor, the participant who teaches; pengajaran is the teaching, instructional content, or lesson. Pembangun is a developer; pembangunan is development. A final -an changes the semantic centre from participant to event/domain.

Pengajar itu menyesuaikan pengajarannya dengan keperluan peserta.

The instructor adapted the teaching to the participants' needs.

Common Mistakes

1. Translating every peN-...-an noun with English -ing.

❌ Saya membaca pengumuman sebagai ‘announcing’ dalam semua konteks.

Incorrect analysis — pengumuman can denote the resulting announcement.

✅ Saya membaca pengumuman yang ditampal pada pintu.

I read the announcement posted on the door.

2. Confusing the actor with the event.

❌ Pengajaran itu menerangkan latihan kepada kelas.

Incorrect if a person is intended — pengajaran names teaching or a lesson, not the instructor.

✅ Pengajar itu menerangkan latihan kepada kelas.

The instructor explained the exercise to the class.

3. Assuming nominalization removes every participant.

❌ Pengumuman oleh pengerusi keputusan itu dibuat pagi tadi.

Awkward ordering — the announced content should remain adjacent to the event noun.

✅ Pengumuman keputusan itu dibuat oleh pengerusi pagi tadi.

The announcement of the decision was made by the chairperson this morning. (formal)

4. Treating every transparent meaning as fully predictable.

❌ Pengajaran dalam ayat ini semestinya bermaksud proses mengajar.

Incorrect claim — pengajaran can also mean a lesson or moral, depending on context.

✅ Pengajaran daripada kesilapan itu masih saya ingat.

I still remember the lesson from that mistake.

Key Takeaways

  • peN-...-an packages an event as a noun that discourse can measure, classify, or evaluate.
  • Its major readings are process, organized activity, result, system, and institutional domain.
  • Participants remain conceptually available and can be expressed inside the noun phrase.
  • Action-to-result and activity-to-institution shifts explain much of the construction's polysemy.
  • The circumfix supplies a perspective, not one English suffix; each lexical family fixes its conventional readings.
