A strong Malay academic abstract compresses an entire research argument without losing track of who did what, what evidence supports the claim, or how certain the authors are. The abstract below is wholly constructed for grammatical study: its project, sample, data, and findings are fictional, so it must not be cited as research about Malaysian schools. It models (academic) Standard Malaysian Malay rather than translating an English abstract word for word.

This study examines multilingual language use in small-group discussions involving 48 pupils at two urban secondary schools in Malaysia. (academic)
Data dikumpulkan melalui rakaman audio, pemerhatian bilik darjah dan temu bual separa berstruktur, lalu dianalisis berdasarkan fungsi interaksi setiap pertukaran bahasa.
Data were collected through audio recordings, classroom observation, and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed according to the interactional function of each language alternation. (academic)
Dapatan menunjukkan bahawa pemilihan bahasa Melayu berkait dengan pengurusan tugasan, manakala penggunaan bahasa lain berkemungkinan membantu murid menjelaskan konsep dan membina keakraban dengan rakan sebaya.
The findings show that the choice of Malay is associated with task management, while the use of other languages may help pupils explain concepts and build rapport with their peers. (academic)
Walau bagaimanapun, hubungan tersebut tidak dapat dianggap sebagai hubungan sebab-akibat kerana kajian ini menggunakan reka bentuk pemerhatian.
However, that association cannot be regarded as a causal relationship because this study uses an observational design. (academic)
Kajian ini mencadangkan bahawa penilaian amalan pelbagai bahasa perlu mengambil kira tujuan interaksi, hubungan peserta dan dasar bahasa sekolah.
The study suggests that the evaluation of multilingual practices needs to take account of interactional purpose, participant relationships, and school language policy. (academic)
Penyelidikan lanjutan diperlukan untuk menentukan sama ada pola yang dikenal pasti turut berlaku dalam konteks sekolah yang berbeza.
Further research is required to determine whether the identified pattern also occurs in different school contexts. (academic)
These translations are deliberately more idiomatic than a gloss. For example, penggunaan pelbagai bahasa becomes “multilingual language use,” but its Malay structure is literally “use of multiple languages.” The noun penggunaan comes first; the material being used follows it.
Abstract architecture: purpose, method, result, limit, implication
The six sentences perform different jobs in a conventional order:
| Sentence | Research move | Key grammar |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | purpose and scope | active research verb; dense participant phrase |
| 2 | method | agentless di-passives; sequencing with lalu |
| 3 | finding | bahawa complement; cautious modality |
| 4 | limitation | tidak dapat dianggap; causal qualification |
| 5 | implication | mencadangkan bahawa; perlu |
| 6 | future research | passive obligation; sama ada complement |
This progression matters. A compressed abstract is not merely a collection of long noun phrases: readers must still recover the chain from evidence to interpretation. The grammar signals each move.
peN-...-an and per-...-an nominalizations
Academic Malay frequently turns processes into nouns so that they can become topics, objects of evaluation, or members of coordinated lists. In this abstract, penggunaan is built from guna, pemilihan from pilih, pengurusan from urus, penilaian from nilai, and penyelidikan from selidik. Related forms such as penjelasan from jelas and pembinaan from bina illustrate the same productive academic resource.
Pemilihan bahasa Melayu berkait dengan pengurusan tugasan.
The choice of Malay is associated with task management. (academic)
The two nominalizations package actions as comparable analytical variables. A less nominal spoken version might be Murid memilih bahasa Melayu apabila mereka mengurus tugasan “Pupils choose Malay when they manage the task,” which names actors and time more explicitly. Neither version is inherently more truthful; the nominal style shifts attention from individual events to patterns.
Perbincangan comes from bincang with per-...-an and denotes an activity or event of discussion. Prefix realization is not a matter of simply attaching the visible string pen- to every root. The peN- family changes shape according to the root, producing forms such as pemilihan, penggunaan, and penyelidikan. Learners must verify established nouns rather than manufacture them from an English noun stack; the nominalization overview explains the larger system.
Penilaian amalan pelbagai bahasa perlu mengambil kira tujuan interaksi.
The evaluation of multilingual practices needs to take interactional purpose into account. (academic)
The head is penilaian, followed by what is evaluated: amalan pelbagai bahasa. English can premodify evaluation with several nouns; Malay normally keeps the head recoverable and adds its dependent phrase afterward.
di-passives in the method and limitation
Data dikumpulkan melalui rakaman audio dan temu bual separa berstruktur.
Data were collected through audio recordings and semi-structured interviews. (academic)
Data itu dianalisis berdasarkan fungsi interaksi setiap pertukaran bahasa.
The data were analyzed on the basis of the interactional function of each language alternation. (academic)
The di- verbs dikumpulkan and dianalisis make data the continuing topic. The researchers are obvious and need not be repeated. This differs from using the passive to conceal a contested agent. If responsibility is important, an explicit phrase can restore it: Data itu dianalisis oleh dua orang penyelidik. See the passive decision guide for contrasts with object voice.
Pola yang dikenal pasti turut berlaku dalam konteks sekolah yang berbeza.
The identified pattern also occurs in different school contexts. (academic)
Yang dikenal pasti is a passive relative clause. The established Malaysian expression is written as two words, dikenal pasti, because its base is kenal pasti. The clause follows pola, whereas English places identified before pattern.
berdasarkan identifies the basis, not the cause
Data dianalisis berdasarkan fungsi interaksi setiap pertukaran bahasa.
The data were analyzed according to the interactional function of each language alternation. (academic)
Berdasarkan introduces the basis, criterion, or source used for a judgment. It does not itself claim that the following noun caused the result. Compare kerana reka bentuk kajian... in the limitation sentence: kerana supplies a reason why a causal conclusion is unavailable.
In careful academic prose, state the basis close to the method it qualifies. A dangling opening such as Berdasarkan data ini, kajian ini... can be acceptable, but the logical subject should be able to perform the following action. English-speaking writers often reproduce the English dangling pattern “Based on the data, it was found...” without making the relation clear.
bahawa complements separate evidence from claim
Dapatan menunjukkan bahawa pemilihan bahasa Melayu berkait dengan pengurusan tugasan.
The findings show that the choice of Malay is associated with task management. (academic)
Kajian ini mencadangkan bahawa penilaian perlu mengambil kira hubungan peserta.
This study suggests that the evaluation should take participant relationships into account. (academic)
Bahawa introduces the proposition selected by menunjukkan or mencadangkan. It helps readers distinguish the evidential frame (“findings show,” “study suggests”) from the content of the claim. In casual speech yang or no overt complementizer may occur in other environments, but careful academic prose favors bahawa here.
The manuscript must still calibrate its reporting verb. Menunjukkan bahawa presents a result supported by the analysis; mencadangkan bahawa is more cautious and inferential. Grammar cannot compensate for weak evidence, so the verb should match the method.
Cautious modality and limits on causation
Penggunaan bahasa lain berkemungkinan membantu murid menjelaskan konsep.
The use of other languages may help pupils explain concepts. (academic, cautious)
Berkemungkinan marks possibility. It prevents an observed association from being phrased as a universal causal fact. Dapat can mark possibility or capacity, while mungkin is a neutral adverb used across registers; the more nominally dense berkemungkinan is characteristic of formal analysis.
Hubungan tersebut tidak dapat dianggap sebagai hubungan sebab-akibat.
That association cannot be regarded as a causal relationship. (academic)
The sequence tidak dapat dianggap combines negation, possibility, and passive evaluation. It explicitly limits inference rather than merely adding a vague hedge. Menggunakan reka bentuk pemerhatian identifies the observational design that motivates the limitation.
Penyelidikan lanjutan diperlukan untuk menentukan sama ada pola itu turut berlaku di sekolah lain.
Further research is required to determine whether the pattern also occurs at other schools. (academic)
Diperlukan states a research need, while sama ada opens an unresolved alternative. The sentence does not promise that replication will produce the same result.
Dense noun phrases without English noun stacks
Consider fungsi interaksi setiap pertukaran bahasa. Its head fungsi comes first; interaksi narrows the type of function, and setiap pertukaran bahasa identifies the unit whose function is coded. A writer can make the relation even more explicit as fungsi setiap pertukaran bahasa dalam interaksi if ambiguity arises.
Likewise, dasar bahasa sekolah means the school's language policy in context, but a particularly dense passage may benefit from dasar bahasa di sekolah. Malay allows compact noun sequences, yet academic expertise is not measured by maximum compression. The test is whether a reader can reconstruct the participant and possessive relations without guessing.
Avoid importing Indonesian-standard academic items unchecked. Many are cognate and some are also valid Malaysian Malay, but institutional preferences differ. For example, Malaysian academic prose commonly uses temu bual for “interview”; an author should not replace it automatically with Indonesian-standard wawancara. Terminology should follow Malaysian dictionaries, disciplinary practice, and the target institution's style sheet.
Plain-language summary
Kajian rekaan ini melihat cara murid menggunakan beberapa bahasa ketika berbincang dalam kumpulan kecil.
This fictional study looks at how pupils use several languages while discussing in small groups. (plain-language summary)
Hasilnya mencadangkan bahawa pilihan bahasa mungkin berubah mengikut tugasan dan hubungan antara murid.
Its results suggest that language choice may change with the task and relationships among pupils. (plain-language summary)
Namun, kajian ini tidak membuktikan bahawa satu pilihan bahasa menyebabkan hasil tertentu.
However, the study does not prove that one language choice causes a particular result. (plain-language summary)
The summary restores human actors (murid) and finite actions (menggunakan, berbincang), but it preserves the abstract's uncertainty. Plain language should unpack structure, not inflate a tentative finding into certainty.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying an English prenominal noun stack
❌ sekolah bahasa dasar penilaian
Incorrect English-like stacking; the head and dependency relations are unclear.
✅ penilaian dasar bahasa sekolah
evaluation of the school's language policy (academic)
2. Treating berdasarkan as a floating English participle
❌ Berdasarkan rakaman, keputusan membuat kesimpulan.
Incorrect—the result cannot perform the act of concluding, and the basis relation dangles.
✅ Berdasarkan rakaman tersebut, penyelidik membuat kesimpulan awal.
On the basis of those recordings, the researchers reached a preliminary conclusion. (academic)
3. Omitting bahawa in a dense formal claim
❌ Dapatan menunjukkan pemilihan bahasa berkait pengurusan tugasan.
Overcompressed for this careful academic claim; the proposition boundary and dengan relation are weakened.
✅ Dapatan menunjukkan bahawa pemilihan bahasa berkait dengan pengurusan tugasan.
The findings show that language choice is associated with task management. (academic)
4. Turning an association into causation
❌ Data pemerhatian membuktikan bahawa penggunaan bahasa lain menyebabkan murid memahami konsep.
Unsupported certainty—the fictional observational design cannot establish this causal claim.
✅ Data pemerhatian mencadangkan bahawa penggunaan bahasa lain berkemungkinan membantu murid menjelaskan konsep.
The observational data suggest that using other languages may help pupils explain concepts. (academic, cautious)
5. Importing neighboring academic terminology automatically
❌ Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara, tanpa menyemak istilah institusi Malaysia.
Poor editing practice—wawancara is strongly associated with Indonesian standard in this context.
✅ Data dikumpulkan melalui temu bual separa berstruktur.
Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. (Malaysian academic usage)
Key Takeaways
Academic Malay uses nominalization to make processes available as analytical participants, di- passives to maintain topic continuity, berdasarkan to state an evidential basis, and bahawa to mark the boundary of a claim. Those resources must preserve, not obscure, who acted and what the evidence licenses. Cautious modality is most effective when it names a precise epistemic limit, and dense noun phrases should be unpacked whenever their relations cease to be recoverable.
