ter-: Valency, Lexicalization, and Register in Malaysian Malay

Knowing that ter- can mark an accidental event, a state, potential, or a superlative does not yet tell you how a derivative behaves in a clause. Terjatuh is intransitive, terambil can retain an affected object, terbuka often behaves like an adjective, and tertinggi modifies a noun or heads a scale comparison. The lexical base and the selected reading jointly determine valency.

This page treats those argument patterns, lexicalized families, and formal–colloquial choices in Malaysian Malay. Formation belongs on the spelling page, and the conceptual connection among readings on the meaning page. A productive schema is real, but no schema licenses every imaginable derivative.

Intransitive events: terjatuh and the affected subject

Jatuh is intransitive, and terjatuh remains intransitive. Its subject identifies the participant that falls; a source, path, or location appears in a prepositional phrase rather than as a direct object.

Aiman terjatuh dari tangga ketika hendak menukar mentol.

Aiman accidentally fell from the ladder while trying to change the bulb.

Telefon saya terjatuh ke dalam longkang.

My phone accidentally fell into the drain.

The phrases dari tangga and ke dalam longkang locate the fall. Neither is an object. Adding ter- does not create a new patient slot; it presents the event as unintended or unexpectedly realized.

Plain jatuh can report the same physical event without explicitly profiling accidentality. In everyday speech, context often makes the lack of control obvious, so both occur:

Tadi aku jatuh dekat tangga.

I fell near the stairs just now. (informal)

Tadi aku terjatuh dekat tangga.

I took a fall near the stairs just now. (informal; explicitly accidental)

The second is not “more past.” It adds the speaker's construal of the event. In formal incident reporting, terjatuh can likewise make absence of intention relevant: Mangsa terjatuh dari pelantar “The victim fell from the platform” (formal).

Accidental transitives can retain an object

When ter- combines with a compatible transitive base, the accidental reading can preserve both actor and object. Saya terambil payung awak has an actor-like subject saya and object payung awak, but taking the wrong umbrella was unintentional.

Maaf, saya terambil fail awak semasa keluar dari bilik mesyuarat.

Sorry, I accidentally took your file when leaving the meeting room.

Dia tertekan butang kecemasan ketika mengangkat begnya.

She accidentally pressed the emergency button while lifting her bag.

This pattern differs from ordinary deliberate mengambil fail and menekan butang. It also differs from patient-oriented fail itu diambil and butang itu ditekan, which present passive events without themselves saying whether the action was accidental.

💡
Do not label every ter- verb “intransitive.” First check the base: an accidental derivative of a transitive base may keep its object, while terjatuh has no object because jatuh does not.

Terbuka as predicate and noun-phrase modifier

Result-state terbuka behaves much like an adjective. It can be the predicate after a subject, or it can modify a noun inside a noun phrase.

Pintu dewan masih terbuka.

The hall door is still open.

Mereka mencari kawasan terbuka untuk mendirikan khemah.

They are looking for an open area in which to pitch a tent.

The noun phrase kawasan terbuka contains a post-nominal modifier, following the normal Malay noun–modifier order. In institutional uses, terbuka can select a kepada phrase that names those who have access:

Permohonan itu terbuka kepada semua warganegara Malaysia yang layak.

Applications are open to all eligible Malaysian citizens. (formal)

Compare the active and passive event constructions:

Pengawal membuka pintu dewan pada pukul tujuh.

The guard opens the hall door at seven.

Pintu dewan dibuka oleh pengawal pada pukul tujuh.

The hall door is opened by the guard at seven.

Membuka assigns the guard the deliberate actor role. Dibuka retains a passive opening event and permits oleh pengawal. Terbuka normally foregrounds the state or a non-controlled transition, so Pintu terbuka oleh pengawal is not the ordinary way to report the guard's deliberate action.

Terlihat: visibility and register

In formal or descriptive Malaysian writing, terlihat can say that something is visible or comes into view. The visible entity is normally the subject, and the vantage point is expressed with a phrase such as dari sini.

Dari anjung rumah itu, puncak gunung terlihat di sebalik kabus.

From the veranda of that house, the mountain peak could be seen through the mist. (literary)

Retakan halus terlihat pada bahagian tepi skrin.

Fine cracks are visible along the edge of the screen. (formal)

In ordinary Malaysian conversation, nampak, boleh nampak, or kelihatan is often more natural. A conversational paraphrase is Dari sini boleh nampak puncak gunung “You can see the mountain peak from here” (informal). Choosing that paraphrase is a register decision, not a spelling change to terlihat.

Be cautious with agent phrases. A sentence such as Kesan itu terlihat oleh penyiasat can occur in elevated prose, but ordinary Malaysian usage generally prefers Penyiasat terlihat/ternampak kesan itu for an accidental perception, Penyiasat melihat kesan itu for a direct active perception, or Kesan itu dapat dilihat oleh penyiasat for explicit potential/passive meaning. The best construction depends on whose perspective matters.

Tertinggi in noun phrases and comparison domains

Superlative tertinggi is adjectival. It normally follows the noun it modifies—bangunan tertinggi, jawatan tertinggi, paras tertinggi—and a phrase with di, dalam, or antara specifies the comparison domain.

Menara itu ialah bangunan tertinggi di daerah ini.

That tower is the tallest building in this district.

Beliau pernah memegang jawatan tertinggi dalam organisasi tersebut.

She once held the highest position in that organisation. (formal)

Bacaan suhu hari ini antara bacaan tertinggi yang pernah direkodkan di kawasan itu.

Today's temperature reading is among the highest ever recorded in that area. (formal)

English puts highest before its noun; Malay retains noun-first order. Antara yang tertinggi means “among the highest,” not uniquely first. When unique maximality matters, state the domain clearly: yang tertinggi di Malaysia.

Paling tinggi is fully standard and often more conversational: Bangunan mana paling tinggi dekat sini? “Which building is tallest around here?” (informal). Compact tertinggi is common in headings, reports, news, rankings, and established noun phrases (neutral/formal).

Productive competition: choose a construction, not just a prefix

The same root family can offer several perspectives:

ConstructionTypical valencyPerspective
Ali membuka pintu.actor + verb + objectdeliberate active event
Pintu dibuka oleh Ali.patient + passive + optional agentpatient-oriented event
Pintu terbuka.theme + state/non-controlled predicateopen endpoint
Ali jatuh.single participantplain fall
Ali terjatuh.single participantunexpected or accidental fall
bangunan paling tingginoun + degree phraseanalytic superlative
bangunan tertingginoun + derived adjectivecompact superlative

These are not freely interchangeable stylistic ornaments. They organize information and participants differently. See the detailed argument guide for complex cases.

Lexicalized forms must be learned as constructions

Several very frequent words begin with ter- but have uses that are not fully compositional. Terdapat introduces existence and is common in formal exposition; termasuk means “included” and also functions like English “including”; terhadap is a preposition meaning “toward, against, concerning”; terpaksa means “be compelled to.”

Terdapat beberapa perbezaan antara kedua-dua versi dokumen itu.

There are several differences between the two versions of the document. (formal)

Semua perbelanjaan, termasuk kos pengangkutan, perlu direkodkan.

All expenses, including transport costs, must be recorded. (formal)

Dia terpaksa membatalkan perjalanan itu kerana demam.

She had to cancel the trip because of a fever.

In conversation, Ada beberapa beza may replace formal Terdapat beberapa perbezaan. But a dictionary listing does not guarantee that the modern meaning can be predicted from the apparent base. Nor should learners coin a new ter- word whenever English has accidentally, -able, or most.

💡
Learn ter- twice: as a productive perspective that helps you interpret new forms, and as a set of lexical families whose complements and registers must be stored.

Common Mistakes

Giving intransitive terjatuh a direct object

❌ Dia terjatuh tangga ketika lampu padam.

Incorrect — tangga needs a source or location preposition; it is not an object of terjatuh.

✅ Dia terjatuh dari tangga ketika lampu padam.

She fell from the stairs when the lights went out.

Using an agent phrase with stative terbuka

❌ Pintu itu terbuka oleh pekerja pada pukul lapan.

Incorrect for a deliberate event — use the di- passive with an agent.

✅ Pintu itu dibuka oleh pekerja pada pukul lapan.

The door was opened by the worker at eight.

Putting a Malay superlative before its noun

❌ Itu tertinggi bangunan di bandar ini.

Incorrect English-style adjective order.

✅ Itu bangunan tertinggi di bandar ini.

That is the tallest building in this city.

Treating formal terlihat as the only Malaysian choice

❌ Dalam semua perbualan, gunakan terlihat dan elakkan nampak.

Incorrect register rule — everyday Malaysian speech commonly uses nampak.

✅ Dari tingkap ni boleh nampak laut.

You can see the sea from this window. (informal)

Coining every logically possible derivative

❌ Tambahkan ter- pada apa-apa kata kerja untuk menyatakan perbuatan tidak sengaja.

Incorrect overgeneralization — not every verb has a conventional accidental ter- derivative.

✅ Gunakan bentuk ter- yang memang mantap dalam bahasa Melayu dan semak keluarga kata yang meragukan.

Use established Malay ter- forms and check unfamiliar word families. (instructional)

Key Takeaways

  • Terjatuh is intransitive, but accidental derivatives of transitive bases can retain an object.
  • Terbuka works as a state predicate or post-nominal modifier; deliberate agentive events normally use membuka/dibuka.
  • Terlihat belongs chiefly to formal or descriptive contexts; nampak and boleh nampak are common conversational alternatives.
  • Tertinggi follows its noun and takes a comparison domain such as di Malaysia or dalam organisasi.
  • Productive grammar and lexicalized constructions coexist; learn both the schema and the established family.
