C1 Learner Path

This route sequences existing C1 material so that dense style never outruns the grammar needed to interpret it. It assumes solid B2 performance. Each week represents five focused sessions; additional reading does not replace delayed retrieval.

C1 is less about accumulating rare paradigms than about controlling alternatives. A proficient reader can unpack a five-layer noun phrase; a proficient writer also knows when a finite clause would be clearer. Throughout the route, harmony, case choice, object definiteness, prefix placement, and information structure remain active assessment categories.

Prerequisites assumed from B2

You should already be able to:

• understand the line of argument in standard-Hungarian news, interviews, popular-science texts, and structured debates;
• write a coherent 450–550-word argument with evidence, concession, and controlled paragraph structure;
• use the core case system and common governed cases without systematic English-preposition transfer;
• maintain definite and indefinite conjugation through complement and relative clauses;
• interpret topic, focus, quantifier scope, and verbal-prefix position together;
• use present, past, conditional, imperative, causative, and non-finite forms with familiar verbs;
• expand and reduce common participial modifiers without changing semantic roles;
• shift between (informal) conversation, (formal) public interaction, and (journalistic) exposition;
• write fully accented Hungarian and preserve vowel and consonant length in careful speech.

If these abilities are inconsistent, complete the B2 learner path before beginning. C1 tasks deliberately reduce scaffolding and ask you to justify stylistic choices as well as grammatical ones.

Entry diagnostic: interpret, transform, defend

Choose a 500–700-word Hungarian article on a familiar topic. Without a dictionary on the first pass:

1. give a three-minute oral account of its argument and the source’s degree of certainty;
2. write a 280–320-word summary and evaluation in fully accented Hungarian;
3. underline every nominalization and participial modifier, then expand three into finite clauses;
4. identify two omissions or pronouns whose reference must be recovered from context;
5. record a ninety-second defense of one interpretation, responding to an imagined objection.

Enter Week 1 if the argument is clear but the transformation task exposes unstable suffix chains, antecedents, or register. Return to the relevant B2 checkpoint if you cannot distinguish the author’s claim from reported evidence or if repeated case and definiteness errors obscure participant roles.

A listening and pronunciation protocol for every week

Use two recordings each week: one edited source, such as public radio or a lecture, and one spontaneous interview or conversation. On the first listening, map the argument. On the second, mark focus stress, pauses, self-repair, omitted material, and stance markers. Shadow thirty seconds, then transcribe it in full.

Sentence stress and intonation organize contrast, irony, continuation, and turn completion. Continue to audit ö/ő, ü/ű, all other vowel lengths, doubled consonants, and the integrity of gy, ny, sz, zs, and dzs.

Week 1: stabilize B2 choices under C1 density

Revisit case selection, verb selection, clause selection, and English-to-Hungarian information structure. Do not reread every paradigm. Instead, diagnose one paragraph from the entry task in five passes: harmony, case, definiteness, prefix order, and information structure.

Transform one proposition from neutral report to constituent correction, cautious inference, and compressed written version. State what changes and what remains constant.

Milestone 1

Edit a 250-word B2 text into concise (formal) prose, then restore it to clear (informal-neutral) speech. Neither version may lose an agent, condition, evidential limitation, or referent.

Week 2: establish official and academic register

Study official and academic forms and their usage. Sort features by function: defined terms identify stable referents, impersonal strategies background agents, nominalizations package processes, and explicit connectives reveal argumentative relations.

Use matched rewrites rather than indiscriminate elevation. An abstract, a municipal decision, and a conference question do not use identical density or address conventions.

Milestone 2

Classify twelve sentences as suitable for an email, public notice, administrative decision, abstract, or oral presentation. Rewrite six for a second genre and explain each change.

Week 3: unpack nominalization and dense modification

Study clause-compression forms followed by clause-compression usage. Revisit past and prospective participle contrasts only after identifying the head noun and every participant in the full clause.

Practice “right-edge parsing”: locate the head noun, identify its possessor, read the final case ending, then attach each preceding modifier. Reverse the operation by expanding the phrase into finite clauses. There is no reliable shortcut; disciplined parsing is the skill.

Read the academic abstract only after these transformations. Mark which compression serves economy and which phrase would be clearer if expanded for a non-specialist audience.

Retrieval checkpoint 1: abstract and oral explanation

After two days without notes, write a 180–220-word abstract for a small fictional study. Then explain the same project aloud to an educated non-specialist in three minutes. The written version should be denser (academic); the oral version should unpack participants and causes.

Check every possessive chain from the head outward. Then check every final case ending. Reject a grammatically ornate abstract if its nominalizations conceal who measured what.

Week 4: recover advanced ellipsis and anaphora

Study advanced scope, ellipsis, and anaphora forms, then the usage page, and finish with agreement and ellipsis contrasts. Ellipsis is licensed by recoverability, not by a desire to sound concise.

Use controlled triples: fully explicit version → natural omission → deliberately ambiguous omission. Identify the clue that recovers the missing noun, verb phrase, subject, or object. English and Hungarian do not leave the same material unspoken.

Milestone 4

Resolve ten ellipses and pronouns in a continuous text, citing the suffix, parallel structure, or discourse relation that supports each answer. Then rewrite three ambiguous passages with the minimum necessary explicit material.

Week 5: refine scope, dislocation, and translation choices

Study quantifier-scope contrasts, left and right dislocation, and translation-aware word-order contrasts. Work with recordings because detached topics and afterthoughts rely heavily on pauses and contour.

Contrast a neutral clause, a preverbal correction, a left-dislocated topic, and a right-dislocated clarification. Do not produce dislocation merely by placing commas in a translation; establish a spoken discourse in which the referent is activated or repaired.

Milestone 5

Translate a 200-word English commentary into natural Hungarian, then back-translate its information structure literally. Flag every place where an English cleft, passive, or stressed auxiliary required reorganization rather than word-for-word substitution.

Week 6: manage evidence, disagreement, and implied meaning

Study reported speech and evidential distance and advanced stance contrasts. Practice separating what the source states, what the evidence permits, and what you infer. Add irony only in contextualized dialogue, where prosody and shared assumptions make it recoverable.

Retrieval checkpoint 2: defend an interpretation

Give a five-minute presentation based on two sources that disagree. Attribute each claim, qualify evidence, state your own conclusion, and respond to two recorded objections. Then transcribe one minute exactly, including repairs and particles, and produce a polished written version.

Week 7: read official and legal prose without imitating it everywhere

Read the contract clause and compare it with the earlier public notice. Segment defined terms, obligations, exceptions, deadlines, and nested possessions. Produce a plain-language paraphrase before attempting a legal-style rewrite.

Milestone 7

Convert a 250-word fictional policy into a public summary of no more than 140 words. Preserve every obligation and exception. Then identify three formal constructions that belong in the source but would burden the public version.

Week 8: recognize regional variation responsibly

Begin with dialect regions within Hungary, then study transborder Hungarian and its usage guide. Use Csángó and contemporary Budapest forms to compare two very different kinds of variation.

The objective is receptive sociolinguistic competence. Label each nonstandard feature (regional: region), (informal), or (archaic) as the source does, and distinguish it from modern standard Hungarian. Do not “correct” a speaker in analysis or imitate a salient form as a costume.

Milestone 8

Annotate a two-minute regionally marked interview. Separate phonetic features from vocabulary and grammar, then restate the content in modern standard Hungarian without describing the speaker as deficient.

Week 9: analyze literary and journalistic style

Review journalistic and literary contrasts, then read the modern literary passage. First establish events, participants, time, and viewpoint. Only then analyze marked order, ellipsis, repetition, sentence rhythm, and figurative wording.

Create controlled contrasts between the original and a neutral paraphrase. The paraphrase is not “better Hungarian”; it reveals what the literary choice contributes. Label a genuinely (literary) structure rather than presenting it as a model for ordinary conversation.

Milestone 9

Write a 500-word close reading of one passage. Quote only short phrases, explain at least four grammatical or discourse choices, and compare each with a neutral alternative. Record a careful reading that preserves length, pauses, and focus.

Week 10: synthesize across genres

Select one public issue and collect three Hungarian sources: an academic or official text, a news or opinion text, and a recorded interview. Prepare a source map before drafting. Your final work must preserve evidential distance and explicitly distinguish source claims from your analysis.

Final C1 productive milestone

Produce an 800–1,000-word analytical essay and a related eight-minute oral presentation with a four-minute question period. The portfolio must include:

• a concise abstract and a clear public-facing introduction;
• controlled nominalization plus at least two purposeful expansions into finite clauses;
• one recoverable ellipsis and one place where repetition prevents ambiguity;
• accurate attribution, concession, and response to a counterargument;
• one justified comment on register or regional variation;
• an analysis of at least one word-order or prosodic choice;
• consistent harmony, case government, object definiteness, prefix placement, and full accents.

Pass only when an educated listener can follow the oral argument in real time and an editor can trace every pronoun, omitted element, and dense modifier. A stylish sentence with an unclear agent or unattached possessive chain must be revised. C1 mastery is controlled flexibility, not maximum compression.
