An Academic Abstract

The abstract below is a fictional teaching text, not the report of a real experiment. It models how a Hungarian-language research abstract moves from aim through method and results to a bounded conclusion. Its topic—finding information on bilingual signs in Komárom—supports a culturally plausible research setting while letting us examine nominal density, evidence, correlatives, and alternatives to English passive prose.

Nyelvi sorrend és információkeresés kétnyelvű irányítótáblákon

Absztrakt. A vizsgálat célja annak feltárása volt, hogy a kétnyelvű irányítótáblák nyelvi sorrendje és vizuális tagolása miként befolyásolja az információ megtalálásának gyorsaságát. A kutatásban kilencvenhat magyarul és szlovákul is beszélő komáromi egyetemista vett részt. A résztvevőknek húsz útvonaltervezési feladat során kellett kiválasztaniuk a keresett helyhez vezető irányt; eközben rögzítettük a válaszidőt és a válaszok pontosságát.

Idiomatic English translation

Language order and information retrieval on bilingual directional signs

Abstract. This study aimed to determine how language order and visual organization on bilingual directional signs affect the speed with which information is located. Ninety-six university students from Komárom who spoke both Hungarian and Slovak participated in the study. In twenty route-planning tasks, participants had to select the direction leading to a specified place; response time and response accuracy were recorded. The data were analyzed using mixed-effects regression models. The results show that search speed was influenced primarily not by language order in itself, but by the consistent visual separation of the two text sections. The more clearly the two languages were separated, the faster participants located the necessary information. At the same time, the effect of order was stronger among those who used one language substantially more often in everyday life. This association suggests that reading routines shape not only language choice but also the distribution of attention. Although the sample does not represent the city’s entire population, the results support the role of typographic consistency in bilingual public information. Overall, an effective directional sign can be said to display both languages prominently while facilitating rapid information retrieval through a clear visual structure.

The English translation uses passives such as “were recorded” and “were analyzed,” even where the Hungarian abstract openly uses first-person plural rögzítettük and elemeztük. That is an idiomatic translation choice, not evidence that the Hungarian lacks an agent.

Decision 1: aim–method–result–limit is the abstract’s backbone

The opening does not begin with the researchers’ biography or the history of Komárom. A vizsgálat célja... names the aim, A kutatásban... and Az adatokat... give method, Az eredmények... reports findings, and Noha... limits the inference. This ordering lets a specialist recover the study design quickly.

A vizsgálat célja annak feltárása volt, hogy a vizuális tagolás miként befolyásolja az információ megtalálását.

The aim of the study was to determine how visual organization affects the locating of information. (academic)

Hungarian miként is a formal written counterpart of “how” (formal/academic). It introduces the content being investigated. The form annak feltárása has a demonstrative antecedent annak whose content is supplied by the following hogy clause; academic prose often uses this noun-plus-clause architecture.

Decision 2: nominal density packages relations into suffixes

Forms such as információkeresés, nyelvválasztás, figyelemeloszlás, and tipográfiai következetesség turn processes or abstract relations into stable research concepts. Possessive chains then state how those concepts relate: az információ megtalálásának gyorsasága literally makes “the finding of the information” the possessor of “speed.”

A válaszidő csökkenése a vizuális elkülönítés következetességével függött össze.

The reduction in response time was associated with the consistency of the visual separation. (academic)

English can pile nouns before nouns; Hungarian more often uses compounds, adjectival derivation, possession, and case. Omitting -nak or a possessive ending breaks the relation rather than merely making the style less formal. The nominalization guide shows how to unpack these dense forms into clauses.

💡
To parse a dense academic noun phrase, begin at its final head. In az információ megtalálásának gyorsasága, the head is gyorsasága; ask “the speed of what?” and work leftward through the possessive chain.

Decision 3: Hungarian need not imitate an English passive

The authorial first-person plural rögzítettük and elemeztük makes the researchers responsible for method choices. This is normal in contemporary academic writing when the disciplinary style permits explicit authorship. Elsewhere the text uses a middle-like result mutatkozott erősebbnek “proved/appeared stronger,” and an impersonal conclusion megállapítható “it can be established.”

A feladatok során rögzítettük a válaszidőt, majd vegyes hatású modellekkel elemeztük az adatokat.

During the tasks, we recorded response time and then analyzed the data with mixed-effects models. (academic)

Összességében megállapítható, hogy a világos tagolás gyorsította a keresést.

Overall, it can be concluded that clear organization made the search faster. (academic)

Hungarian also possesses passive constructions, but importing a passive into every clause usually obscures who designed or analyzed the study. English-speaker transfer is especially visible in overuse of került + nominal form where a simple active verb would be clearer.

Decision 4: evidence predicates calibrate certainty

Az eredmények azt mutatják introduces an observed pattern. Arra utal is weaker: the association supports an interpretation without proving a mechanism. Alátámasztják presents support, while nem képviseli explicitly blocks population-wide generalization.

Ez az összefüggés arra utal, hogy az olvasási rutin a figyelem eloszlását is alakítja.

This association suggests that reading routines also shape the distribution of attention. (academic)

The demonstrative cases are governed by the predicates: azt mutatja, hogy..., but arra utal, hogy.... English uses a plain that clause after both show and suggest; Hungarian keeps the predicate’s case frame visible in azt/arra.

Decision 5: correlatives express structured comparison

Minél..., annál... correlates two scales. Both clauses use comparatives or scalar expressions, and the paired words stand near the elements whose degree varies.

Minél egyértelműbben különült el egymástól a két nyelv, annál gyorsabban találták meg a résztvevők a szükséges információt.

The more clearly the two languages were separated, the faster the participants located the necessary information.

Nemcsak..., hanem... is adds a second affected domain while retaining the first:

Az olvasási rutin nemcsak a nyelvválasztást, hanem a figyelem eloszlását is alakítja.

Reading routines shape not only language choice but also the distribution of attention. (academic)

English speakers sometimes leave is after the first member because English says not only X but also Y. Hungarian’s additive is belongs to the added second constituent a figyelem eloszlását is.

Decision 6: corrective focus places alternatives before the verb

The result sentence contrasts two candidate causes. Both nem önmagában a nyelvek sorrendje and elsősorban a ... vizuális elkülönítése appear before befolyásolta, where prosodic focus interprets the correction.

A keresés gyorsaságát nem a nyelvek puszta sorrendje, hanem a következetes tipográfia befolyásolta.

Search speed was influenced not by mere language order but by consistent typography. (academic)

The initial accusative a keresés gyorsaságát is the continuing topic—what the paragraph is explaining. A rigid English SVO order would hide the correction’s information structure. In spoken delivery, the strongest stress falls on the contrasted phrases; punctuation alone does not create focus.

Decision 7: definiteness and pro-drop maintain cohesion

The abstract first introduces kilencvenhat ... egyetemista, then refers back with definite a résztvevők. Once az adatokat is identifiable, definite elemeztük agrees with it. The first-person subject remains unspoken because -tük identifies the research team.

Az adatokat regressziós modellekkel elemeztük, majd külön ellenőriztük a szélső értékeket.

We analyzed the data with regression models and then checked the outliers separately. (academic)

Writing elemeztünk az adatokat copies English’s invariant verb and ignores Hungarian object definiteness. Repeating mi before every method verb is possible only with contrast; otherwise it disrupts the impersonal, cohesive flow.

💡
Academic cohesion is morphological as well as lexical. Articles establish recoverable referents, definite endings track them, and person endings let the authors remain implicit until their identity becomes contrastive.

Diagnosing an English-shaped rendering

A plausible learner sentence is A résztvevők húsz feladatban kellett megtalálni az információ. It keeps English “the participants had to” as a nominative subject, chooses an undifferentiated “in” case, and leaves the object unmarked. Hungarian assigns the obligation to dative a résztvevőknek, frames repeated tasks with során, and marks definite az információt accusative.

A résztvevőknek húsz feladat során kellett megtalálniuk a szükséges információt.

The participants had to locate the necessary information over the course of twenty tasks.

The personal infinitive megtalálniuk repeats third-person plural reference. That apparent redundancy is functional: dative experiencer and infinitive ending jointly identify who carries out the required action.

Common Mistakes

❌ A résztvevők húsz feladat során kellett választaniuk.

Incorrect — the experiencer of kell must be dative plural: a résztvevőknek.

✅ A résztvevőknek tizennyolc próba során kellett irányt választaniuk.

The participants had to choose a direction over the course of eighteen trials.

❌ Az adatokat két különböző modellel elemeztünk.

Incorrect — the definite object az adatokat requires elemeztük.

✅ A mérési adatokat két statisztikai modellel elemeztük.

We analyzed the measurement data using two statistical models. (academic)

❌ A résztvevők nem megtalálták időben a megfelelő kijáratot.

Incorrect prefix order — negation sends meg behind the finite verb.

✅ A kontrollcsoport tagjai nem találták meg időben a megfelelő kijáratot.

The control-group members did not find the correct exit in time.

❌ A sorrend nemcsak a pontosságot is, hanem a válaszidőt alakította.

Incorrect correlative structure — is belongs to the added member after hanem.

✅ A felirat mérete nemcsak a pontosságot, hanem a válaszidőt is befolyásolta.

The size of the sign affected not only accuracy but also response time.

Key Takeaways

  • A successful abstract gives aim, method, result, limitation, and conclusion in a recoverable sequence.
  • Hungarian academic density relies on compounds, nominalization, possession, and case rather than English-style noun stacking.
  • First-person plural active verbs, result predicates, and impersonal forms offer several alternatives to a mechanical passive.
  • Azt mutatja, arra utal, and alátámasztja encode different evidential strengths and case frames.
  • Correlatives organize scalar and additive relations: minél... annál..., nemcsak... hanem... is.
  • Topic–focus order and prosody identify the corrected explanation.
  • Articles, definite conjugation, and pro-drop create cohesion across the abstract.
