Nominalization and Dense Participial Modification: Forms and Core Pattern

Hungarian can package an event as a noun with -ás/-és or place an entire description before a noun as an expanded participial modifier. These are not decorative substitutes for finite clauses: they redistribute the clause's participants into a noun phrase, where possessive marking and case suffixes replace some of the work formerly done by verb inflection. Both strategies are neutral in short, familiar combinations, but long stacks are especially characteristic of formal, administrative, and academic writing.

English also has nominalizations such as arrival and modifiers such as the report submitted yesterday. The danger is assuming that the same words can simply be translated in the same order. Hungarian must make its own decisions about argument roles, possessive structure, verbal prefixes, and which noun the participle modifies.

Productive event nouns with -ás/-és

The productive suffix is -ás after back-vowel stems and -és after front-vowel stems. It attaches to the verb stem, not to the full infinitive in -ni. The result is a noun and therefore accepts plural, possessive, and case suffixes.

VerbEvent nounPossessed or case-marked form
olvas “read”olvasás “reading”olvasása “his/her/its reading”
ír “write”írás “writing”írásokról “about writings”
épít “build”építés “building/construction”építésének “of its construction”
megérkezik “arrive”megérkezés “arrival”megérkezésükig “until their arrival”
eszik “eat”evés “eating”evéshez “for eating”
alszik “sleep”alvás “sleeping/sleep”alvásom “my sleep”

Forms such as evés and alvás show stem alternation. There is no universal shortcut for these stems: they belong to the same stem families seen elsewhere in the verb system and must be learned. Productivity also does not guarantee stylistic equality. Megvizsgálás is possible, for example, but lexical vizsgálat is often more idiomatic for an examination or investigation.

A rendszer frissítése körülbelül húsz percet vesz igénybe.

Updating the system takes about twenty minutes.

A vendégek megérkezéséig még megterítjük az asztalt.

We'll finish setting the table before the guests arrive.

The first event noun bears third-person possessive -e: frissítés-e. The possessive form is required because a rendszer fills a participant slot of the nominalized event. In the second, megérkezés-ük-ig contains the third-person plural possessive marker and terminative -ig.

💡
A productive form can still lose to an established noun. Learn frequent pairs in context: megérkezés “arrival,” döntés “decision,” vizsgálat “examination,” and engedély “permission.” Morphology tells you what can be formed; usage tells you what speakers normally choose.

Participants become possessive or oblique dependents

With an intransitive verb, the original subject commonly appears as the possessor of the event noun. A bare possessor precedes the possessed noun; the event noun carries a third-person possessive suffix.

A csapat váratlan visszatérése mindenkit meglepett.

The team's unexpected return surprised everyone.

Here a csapat is semantically the returning participant, while visszatérés-e has the same possessive architecture as “the team's return.” An explicit -nak/-nek possessor is possible when the possessor is topical or separated from the noun: a csapatnak a váratlan visszatérése. This fuller version is grammatically regular but heavier.

With a transitive base, a patient or theme can occupy the same prenominal possessor-like slot:

A szerződés aláírása után pezsgőt bontottunk.

After the contract was signed, we opened a bottle of sparkling wine.

A szerződés is what gets signed, not the signer. If the agent must be named, formal Hungarian often uses által plus -i, yielding általi “by”:

A szerződés mindkét fél általi aláírása lezárta a tárgyalásokat.

The signing of the contract by both parties concluded the negotiations. (formal)

This is accurate formal/legal packaging, but it is too dense for most conversation. Neutral speech normally uses a finite clause: Miután mindkét fél aláírta a szerződést, lezárultak a tárgyalások.

💡
Only one ordinary possessor position is readily available. If both agent and patient must be overt, Hungarian often marks the agent with formal általi, or—more naturally outside administrative prose—restores a finite clause.

Case chains attach from the inside outward

Once an event has become a noun, it can itself be a dependent of another noun and then receive the case required by the whole sentence. This produces long but segmentable chains.

A bizottság a dokumentumok ellenőrzésének megkezdéséről döntött.

The committee decided to begin checking the documents. (formal)

Segment the dense phrase from right to left:

  • dokumentum-ok — “documents,” the patient of checking;
  • ellenőrzés-e — “their checking,” an event noun with a possessive suffix;
  • ellenőrzés-é-nek — “of the checking,” dependent of megkezdése;
  • megkezdés-e — “its beginning,” another possessed event noun;
  • megkezdés-é-ről — “about its beginning,” because dönt valamiről requires -ról/-ről.

The final case suffix belongs to the entire noun phrase. English uses a chain of prepositions and -ing forms; Hungarian builds the hierarchy morphologically. Such stacking is grammatical but strongly formal/administrative. A finite alternative is usually easier to process: A bizottság úgy döntött, hogy megkezdi a dokumentumok ellenőrzését.

The three adjectival participles

Hungarian participles precede the noun they modify. Their traditional tense labels are useful, but the contrast is also aspectual and modal.

FormCore interpretationExampleRegister
-ó/-őongoing, habitual, or active relationa folyosón várakozó ügyfelekneutral
-t/-ttcompleted/result relation; often patient with transitivesa tegnap elküldött számlaneutral
-andó/-endőprospective, intended, or required actionaz aláírandó nyilatkozatmostly formal

The participial suffixes obey vowel harmony, but they attach to the same stem variants that appear elsewhere in the verb system. Thus tesz has tevő and teendő, while eszik and alszik have evő and alvó. The completed participle also uses the past-tense stem pattern, including linking vowels in forms such as küldött and olvasott; it is therefore more precise to treat -t/-tt as shorthand for a family of surface forms than as a suffix that always attaches unchanged.

A bejáratnál türelmesen várakozó utasokat hamarosan beengedik.

The passengers waiting patiently at the entrance will be let in shortly.

A könyvelő által tegnap elküldött számlán rossz cím szerepel.

The invoice sent by the accountant yesterday has the wrong address on it.

A péntekig benyújtandó kérelmeket elektronikusan kell aláírni.

Applications to be submitted by Friday must be signed electronically. (formal)

An expanded modifier preserves many verbal dependents: location (a bejáratnál), manner (türelmesen), agent (a könyvelő által), and deadline (péntekig). It does not preserve finite person and mood. If those distinctions matter, use a relative clause.

Attachment and finite paraphrases

Because all participial material comes before the head noun, a reader must identify the head from morphology and meaning. Compare the bracketing:

  • [a tegnap bemutatott kutatás] eredményei — “the results of the research presented yesterday”;
  • a [tegnap bemutatott kutatási eredmények] — “the research results presented yesterday.”

Both are grammatical, but bemutatott modifies a different head. Long strings with several nouns can make the intended attachment needlessly hard. A finite relative clause exposes the relation:

Azok az eredmények, amelyeket tegnap mutattak be, több korábbi feltevést cáfolnak.

The findings that were presented yesterday disprove several earlier assumptions.

The finite version is not less advanced. Good C1–C2 prose alternates compression with finite clauses so that dense information remains readable.

The subordination forms page shows how finite clause boundaries and correlates recover distinctions that a compressed noun phrase leaves implicit.

Segmentation exercise

Analyze a minisztérium által jövő héten közzéteendő jelentés tervezete.

  • jelentés is the head of the participial modifier: it is what is to be published.
  • közzé-te-endő contains the separated lexical prefix element közzé, the verb stem te-, and prospective participle -endő.
  • jövő héten gives the time.
  • a minisztérium által identifies the agent in formal style.
  • tervezete is the head of the whole noun phrase: “the draft of [the report...].”

The clear finite paraphrase is annak a jelentésnek a tervezete, amelyet a minisztérium jövő héten tesz közzé.

Common Mistakes

❌ a szerződés aláírni után

Incorrect English-style compression: an infinitive cannot simply replace ‘after signing the contract.’

✅ a szerződés aláírása után

after the contract is signed

❌ a zenekar fellépés előtt

Incorrect—the participant relation requires a possessive suffix on the event noun.

✅ a zenekar fellépése előtt

before the band performs

❌ a tegnap a könyvelő küldött számla

Incorrect word-for-word relative clause: the modifier needs a participle or a finite relative construction.

✅ a könyvelő által tegnap elküldött számla

the invoice sent by the accountant yesterday (formal)

❌ a holnap aláírt megállapodás

Wrong for an agreement that is still to be signed: the completed participle conflicts with holnap.

✅ a holnap aláírandó megállapodás

the agreement to be signed tomorrow (formal)

Key Takeaways

  • -ás/-és turns a verbal process into a noun that can carry possessive and case suffixes.
  • Original participants are reorganized inside the noun phrase; an overt agent plus patient often calls for formal általi or a finite clause.
  • Read case chains from the innermost event outward.
  • -ó/-ő, -t/-tt, and -andó/-endő encode ongoing/active, completed/result, and prospective/required relations.
  • Compression is one option in advanced style, not a measure of sophistication by itself.
