Hungarian stance expressions do different interpersonal jobs. Szerintem accepts responsibility for an opinion, úgy tudom presents something as the speaker's current knowledge, and állítólag attributes a report without endorsing it fully. Similarly, nem egészen can reduce the force of disagreement, while hát persze can signal either easy agreement or biting irony. The forms are surveyed on the forms page and their common settings on the usage page; here the issue is choosing at the boundaries.
Opinion, knowledge, or attributed report?
The three expressions differ in evidential commitment, not simply in certainty.
| Marker | Speaker's stance | Typical register |
|---|---|---|
| szerintem | “This is my assessment.” The speaker owns the judgment. | unmarked in conversation and writing |
| úgy tudom | “This is the information I currently possess.” It remains open to correction. | unmarked; useful in careful professional speech |
| állítólag | “This is being said.” The source is external, vague, or intentionally withheld. | unmarked, but risky in accusations and gossip |
Compare the same proposed move:
Szerintem a könyvtár jövőre új épületbe költözik.
In my opinion, the library will move to a new building next year.
Úgy tudom, a könyvtár jövőre új épületbe költözik.
As far as I know, the library will move to a new building next year.
Állítólag a könyvtár jövőre új épületbe költözik.
Apparently, the library will move to a new building next year.
The first can be a prediction based on judgment. The second implies that the speaker has learned this as information, though it may need updating. The third shifts responsibility toward an unspecified report. English apparently sometimes means “as the evidence visibly shows”; Hungarian állítólag normally evokes what people say, not direct visual inference. If the source matters, name it: A városi közlemény szerint... “According to the city notice...”
Direct correction or mitigated disagreement?
Bare nem rejects a proposition. Nem egészen narrows the rejection to “not quite/not entirely,” allowing part of the earlier contribution to remain valid. It is useful when the disagreement is partial; using it before a total rejection can sound evasive or dryly ironic.
Nem, a pályázat határideje nem péntek, hanem csütörtök.
No, the application deadline isn't Friday but Thursday.
Nem egészen: csütörtökig az adatlapot kell elküldeni, a mellékletek ráérnek péntekig.
Not quite: the form must be sent by Thursday, but the attachments can wait until Friday.
The second speaker preserves the useful part of the previous account and repairs the inaccurate boundary. A reason, an alternative, or a source usually does more interpersonal work than inserting a word translated as please.
Szerintem ez a megoldás túl drága.
I think this solution is too expensive.
Értem az érvet, de szerintem egy olcsóbb próbaidőszakkal kevesebbet kockáztatnánk.
I understand the argument, but I think we would risk less with a cheaper trial period.
The second response acknowledges the other turn and offers a workable alternative. It is therefore often more cooperative even though it contains de “but.” Hungarian politeness, like the request system, is distributed across address form, title, conditionality, acknowledgment, reason, and intonation.
Persze or hát persze—and which prosody?
Persze presents a proposition as expected or self-evident. With warm, falling intonation, it can readily accept a request. Hát persze adds a turn-oriented hát, often signaling that the answer follows naturally from shared assumptions. With exaggerated stress, a pause, or a flat theatrical contour, the same words can become ironic: “Oh, of course.”
– Eljössz velünk a kiállításra? – Hát persze, már meg is vettem a jegyet.
– Are you coming to the exhibition with us? – Of course; I've already bought my ticket.
Hát persze, megint nekem kell rendbe hoznom mindent.
Oh, of course—once again I'm the one who has to put everything right. (ironic with stressed persze)
The words alone do not encode the polarity. The second reading arises from the mismatch between “self-evident expectation” and an unwelcome recurring event, reinforced by prosody. In text, context, punctuation, or an explicit evaluative phrase must carry what voice quality would signal in speech.
Do not use persze as an automatic translation of polite English certainly. When a customer asks a neutral factual question, Természetesen (formal) may sound ceremonially helpful, while a plain factual answer can be more natural. Conversely, clipped Persze. can imply “Obviously.”
Listener signals are not all agreement
Hungarian listeners commonly use aha (informal), igen, értem, ühüm (informal), and repetitions to show that they are following. A backchannel keeps the speaker's turn moving; it need not endorse the claim.
– A piros vonal mutatja a tavalyi adatokat. – Aha. – A kék pedig az idei eredményeket.
– The red line shows last year's data. – Uh-huh. – And the blue one shows this year's results.
Értem, hogy miért döntöttetek így, de az eredménnyel nem értek egyet.
I understand why you decided that way, but I don't agree with the outcome.
In the second example, értem claims comprehension, not consent. English speakers sometimes avoid listener signals for fear of interrupting, then seem detached; alternatively, they translate every yes as igen and accidentally sound as though they approve. Prosody and the following turn disambiguate acknowledgment from agreement.
Repair: correct the message without abandoning the turn
Self-repair may replace one item immediately, or reframe the whole claim with úgy értem “I mean,” pontosabban “more precisely” (formal/academic), or bocsánat “sorry.” These forms manage who holds the floor as well as accuracy.
Kedden indulunk—bocsánat, szerdán, közvetlenül ebéd után.
We're leaving on Tuesday—sorry, on Wednesday, straight after lunch.
Nem a tervet ellenzem. Úgy értem, több időt kellene hagynunk a tesztelésre.
I'm not opposing the plan. I mean, we should allow more time for testing.
Immediate replacement suits a local slip. Úgy értem warns that the listener should revise a larger interpretation. In an academic presentation, pontosabban can refine a category without sounding apologetic; in close conversation it may sound overly exacting if used for every minor reformulation.
Placement and information structure
Clause-initial szerintem, úgy tudom, and állítólag normally scope over the following proposition. A later position can highlight a contrast between sources or viewpoints.
A terv szerintem működőképes, a költségbecslés viszont túl optimista.
The plan is workable in my view, but the cost estimate is too optimistic.
Here a terv is the established topic and szerintem qualifies the assessment. Initial Szerintem a terv... more neutrally frames the whole turn as the speaker's view. Strong stress on SZERINTEM can contrast “in my view” with someone else's and therefore sound defensive.
Decision tree
- Are you giving your evaluation? Use szerintem.
- Are you reporting what you currently know and allowing correction? Use úgy tudom.
- Are you attributing the information to circulating speech? Use állítólag; name the source when accountability matters.
- Is only part of the previous claim wrong? Use nem egészen, then identify the accurate boundary.
- Are you signaling comprehension while withholding agreement? Use értem or an appropriate backchannel, then state your position.
- Did you misspeak locally? Replace the item with bocsánat if needed. Was the intended interpretation wrong? Use úgy értem and reformulate.
- Could hát persze be heard ironically? Check prosody, relationship, and whether the event is actually welcome.
Diagnostic exercise
Choose the best option.
- You are making a personal assessment of a design: szerintem / állítólag.
- You learned a schedule but invite correction: úgy tudom / hát persze.
- You accept only half of a colleague's account: nem / nem egészen.
- You want the speaker to continue without endorsing the claim: aha / egyetértek.
- You must replace an interpretation, not one mistaken date: úgy értem / szerdán.
Answers: (1) szerintem, because the judgment is yours. (2) úgy tudom, because it presents current knowledge as revisable. (3) nem egészen, followed by the precise correction. (4) aha (informal), because it can be a pure backchannel. (5) úgy értem, because it introduces a reformulation of intended meaning.
Common Mistakes
❌ Szerintem, hogy a második változat világosabb.
Incorrect: szerintem does not introduce a hogy-clause in this pattern.
✅ Szerintem a második változat világosabb.
In my opinion, the second version is clearer.
❌ Állítólag, hogy holnap bezár az uszoda.
Incorrect: állítólag scopes over a clause but does not select hogy here.
✅ Állítólag holnap bezár az uszoda.
Apparently, the swimming pool is closing tomorrow.
❌ Nem egészen egyet értek ezzel az értelmezéssel.
Incorrect spelling and order under negation: the elements of egyetért separate, and egyet follows the verb.
✅ Nem egészen értek egyet ezzel az értelmezéssel.
I don't quite agree with this interpretation.
❌ Kérem, ön ne beszélj velem ilyen hangon!
Incorrect agreement: ön requires the third-person form beszéljen.
✅ Kérem, ne beszéljen velem ilyen hangon!
Please don't speak to me in that tone. (distanced address)
The corrected final sentence is firm, not magically friendly. Kérem cannot cancel the social force of a prohibition; third-person agreement makes the address system coherent, while situation and tone determine whether the rebuke is justified.
Key Takeaways
- Szerintem owns an assessment, úgy tudom presents revisable knowledge, and állítólag attributes a report.
- Nem egészen is honest mitigation only when some part of the earlier claim survives.
- Hát persze can be sincere or ironic; prosody and contextual expectation decide.
- Listener signals such as aha and értem can show attention or comprehension without agreement.
- Repair expressions manage both accuracy and turn continuity.
- Politeness is a coordinated social design involving person, title, formula, indirectness, acknowledgment, and prosody—not the addition of one word meaning please.
