Hungarian speakers mark not only what they claim but also who is responsible for it, how strongly they disagree, whether a response is sincere or ironic, and whether they are listening or trying to take the floor. Forms such as szerintem, nem egészen, állítólag, úgy tudom, and hát persze belong to different grammatical architectures and carry different social risks.
This page establishes those architectures: personal postpositional forms, clause-level adverbs, fixed frames, backchannels, and repair expressions. Later usage work can refine their conversational effects. Unless labeled otherwise, examples represent neutral modern standard Hungarian.
A compact map of stance forms
| Form | Architecture | Core contribution | Typical commitment |
|---|---|---|---|
| szerintem | personal form of szerint | speaker's view/judgment | owned opinion |
| nem egészen | negator + degree adverb | partial or mitigated disagreement | correction left to follow |
| úgy tudom | úgy + definite tudom | speaker's current information | qualified personal responsibility |
| állítólag | lexicalized sentence adverb | circulating/unspecified report | source responsibility withheld |
| hát persze | discourse particle + stance adverb | obvious agreement or contextual irony | prosody-dependent |
| aha, értem | listener signals | continued attention/comprehension | not necessarily agreement |
| úgy értem, pontosabban | repair frames | replace or refine prior wording | speaker corrects self |
English I think, apparently, right, and of course overlap with several rows, but the Hungarian choice identifies a source and a conversational action more precisely. Politeness cannot be added afterward with a single kérem: social distance also appears in person marking, title, mitigation, turn timing, and intonation.
Szerintem: personally inflected viewpoint
Szerint takes personal endings when its standard, source, or viewpoint is a pronoun. The paradigm is productive and resembles other inflected postpositions.
| Person | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| én | szerintem | in my opinion |
| te | szerinted | in your opinion |
| ő | szerinte | in his/her opinion |
| mi | szerintünk | in our opinion |
| ti | szerintetek | in your opinion |
| ők | szerintük | in their opinion |
Szerintem előbb tisztáznunk kellene, ki felel a költségekért.
In my opinion, we should first clarify who is responsible for the costs.
Szerinted ez a magyarázat minden esetre kiterjed?
Do you think this explanation covers every case?
An extra nominative pronoun is normally unnecessary: szerintem already contains first-person reference. Én szerintem occurs in speech when én is contrastive—“in my view, unlike theirs”—but it is marked, not the neutral template.
A lexical noun precedes bare szerint: a szakértő szerint, a szabályzat szerint. That architecture attributes a claim or measures something against a standard; the personal forms do not take an extra case suffix.
Nem egészen: leave room for a targeted correction
Nem egészen literally negates completeness: “not entirely/not quite.” As a turn-opening response, it mitigates disagreement by accepting that part of the previous contribution may be right.
– Akkor minden résztvevő jóváhagyta a módosítást? – Nem egészen: ketten még nem válaszoltak.
‘So every participant approved the amendment?’ ‘Not quite: two people still haven't replied.’
The colon represents the explanatory continuation in writing. In speech, nem egészen normally has a nonfinal contour if the correction follows. A bare, sharply falling Nem performs a more categorical rejection.
Mitigation does not replace content. Nem egészen should be followed by the dimension that is inaccurate. If the entire proposition is false, Ez nem így van “That is not the case” may be clearer; in a high-risk relationship, preface the correction with Attól tartok “I'm afraid” or acknowledge the valid part.
Az alapgondolattal egyetértek, de a határidő szerintem nem reális.
I agree with the basic idea, but in my view the deadline isn't realistic.
Here agreement is stated before the disagreement. The softening comes from the architecture of the turn, not from a translated please.
Úgy tudom and állítólag: two kinds of evidence
Úgy tudom, (hogy)... presents information as the speaker's current understanding. Tudom is the 1sg definite form because úgy anticipates the content of the following proposition; hogy is often omitted after the fixed frame.
Úgy tudom, a pályázati határidőt egy héttel meghosszabbították.
As far as I know, the application deadline has been extended by one week.
The speaker accepts qualified responsibility: this is what their information indicates, while leaving open the possibility of correction. Person can change—úgy tudjuk, úgy tudja—but the evidential frame most often reports the relevant knower.
Állítólag marks hearsay or an unspecified circulating report. It does not itself say whether the speaker believes the report.
Állítólag jövő tavasszal bezárják az uszodát, mert felújítják.
Apparently, the swimming pool will close for renovations next spring.
In journalistic or academic writing, a named source is usually more accountable than bare állítólag: az önkormányzat közleménye szerint “according to the municipality's announcement” (formal). Hearsay marking is not a license to publish an unsupported claim.
The contrast is developed earlier in reporting contrasts: úgy tudom locates evidence with the speaker, whereas állítólag backgrounds or withholds its source.
Hát persze: agreement or irony
With warm, prompt, falling agreement, hát persze means “of course.” With delayed timing, exaggerated pitch, lengthening, or context that makes the proposition obviously false, the same words can be ironic.
– Segítesz összepakolni? – Hát persze, kezdjük a könyvekkel!
‘Will you help me pack?’ ‘Of course; let's start with the books!’
Hát persze, mert nekünk semmi más dolgunk nincs.
Oh, of course—because we have absolutely nothing else to do. (ironic)
The first answer immediately commits to action. The second supplies an absurd justification that reverses the apparent agreement (informal/ironic). Writing is dangerous because readers cannot hear the contour; explicit context must carry the irony. In professional or intercultural communication, literal wording is safer.
Listener signals are not votes
Hungarian listeners use short signals to show that a turn is being followed. Aha and ühüm are common (informal) backchannels; igen can acknowledge; értem claims understanding; rendben accepts an arrangement. They are not interchangeable.
– A második mellékletben vannak a részletes számok. – Aha, értem. És az összesítés melyik fájlban van?
‘The detailed figures are in the second appendix.’ ‘Uh-huh, I see. And which file contains the summary?’
Aha signals continued reception, and értem claims comprehension. Neither necessarily means “I agree with the figures.” Formal hearings and presentations favor less colloquial értem, igen, or a contentful paraphrase; repeated aha may sound too casual.
Turn-taking depends on prosody. A short signal with low prominence lets the current speaker continue. A louder Igen, de... with its own contour claims the floor and announces contrast.
Repairing what you just said
Self-repair can replace a word, narrow a claim, or correct a factual slip.
A találkozó csütörtökön lesz – pontosabban csütörtök délelőtt.
The meeting will be on Thursday—or, more precisely, Thursday morning.
Nem a döntést kifogásolom; úgy értem, az indoklás nem elég világos.
I'm not objecting to the decision; I mean, the reasoning isn't clear enough.
Pontosabban refines precision; úgy értem reformulates intended meaning. Illetve can add or revise material in careful speech and writing, but it has several functions (“and/or,” “or rather,” “respectively”) and can obscure the repair if overused. A direct Bocsánat, rosszul mondtam “Sorry, I said that incorrectly” is clearest after a factual mistake.
Bocsánat, rosszul mondtam: nem tizenötkor, hanem tizenhat órakor kezdünk.
Sorry, I misspoke: we're starting not at three but at four p.m.
The repair receives contrastive focus: nem tizenötkor, hanem tizenhat órakor. Formula, focus, and prosodic restart cooperate.
Segmentation exercise
- szerint-em: postposition + 1sg personal ending, “according to me/in my opinion.”
- szerint-ünk: postposition + 1pl personal ending, “according to us.” Front rounded ü belongs to the harmonic suffix.
- nem egész-en: negator + adjective/adverb base + adverbial ending, “not entirely.”
- úgy tud-om: manner/correlative adverb + 1sg definite verb, with a proposition as understood content.
- állít-ó-lag: verbal base + participial material + lexicalized adverbial -lag, now functioning as “reportedly.”
- hát persze: two separate discourse words; spelling does not encode sincere versus ironic prosody.
- pontos-abb-an: adjective + comparative + adverbial ending, “more precisely.”
Harmony is visible in productive szerintünk/szerintetek and pontosan/pontosabban. By contrast, the evidential meaning of állítólag is lexicalized; learners should not freely create synonymous hearsay adverbs from arbitrary verbs with -lag/-leg.
Common Mistakes
❌ Én szerint ez túl drága.
Incorrect literal transfer — a personal-pronoun viewpoint requires the inflected form szerintem; bare szerint follows a lexical noun phrase such as a szabályzat szerint.
✅ Szerintem ez túl drága.
In my opinion, this is too expensive.
❌ Úgy tudok, hétfőn érkezik.
Incorrect fixed evidential frame — qualified personal knowledge uses the definite form tudom.
✅ Úgy tudom, hétfőn érkezik.
As far as I know, he/she will arrive on Monday.
❌ Nem egész egyetértek a következtetéssel.
Incorrect form and prefix order — the degree adverb is egészen, and negated egyetért separates the prefix.
✅ Nem egészen értek egyet a következtetéssel.
I don't entirely agree with the conclusion.
⚠️ Kérem, ez az állítás nem igaz.
Grammatical words, but kérem does not by itself mitigate this categorical contradiction.
✅ Attól tartok, ezt az állítást a rendelkezésre álló adatok nem támasztják alá.
I'm afraid the available data do not support this claim. (formal)
Key Takeaways
- Szerintem encodes a personally owned judgment; a named source takes X szerint.
- Nem egészen mitigates partial disagreement but should introduce a precise correction.
- Úgy tudom marks qualified personal information; állítólag marks an unspecified report.
- Hát persze depends on context and prosody for sincere or ironic interpretation.
- Listener signals show attention, comprehension, floor-taking, or acceptance; they do not all mean agreement.
- Repair frames such as pontosabban and úgy értem tell the listener how to replace prior wording.
- Social risk is distributed across person, source, indirectness, turn timing, and prosody—not solved by kérem alone.
