Temporal Postpositions: Contrasts and Learner Traps

Use előtt/után after a nominal anchor, mielőtt/miután before a finite clause, óta for an interval viewed back from a reference time, and -tól/-től fogva for a starting boundary presented as the beginning of an onward regime. Duration -n keresztül, completion-time alatt, and endpoint -ig answer different questions. The complete morphology is on the temporal forms page.

Nominal anchor versus finite clause

Előtt and után follow noun phrases. If the anchor contains its own subject and finite verb, use the conjunctions mielőtt “before” and miután “after.”

Indulás előtt bezártam az ablakokat.

Before departure, I closed the windows.

Mielőtt elindultam, bezártam az ablakokat.

Before I left, I closed the windows.

A vacsora után sétáltunk egyet.

After dinner, we took a walk.

Miután megvacsoráztunk, sétáltunk egyet.

After we had dinner, we took a walk.

A nominalization can package a whole event: Péter megérkezése után “after Péter's arrival.” English speakers sometimes put Hungarian után before a finite clause because English after works both ways; standard Hungarian changes construction.

💡
If the temporal anchor has a conjugated verb, start with mielőtt/miután. If it is a noun phrase, put előtt/után after it.

Óta versus -tól/-től

Óta presents a start plus the interval leading to the current or narrative reference point. Bare -tól/-től simply marks a starting boundary and combines naturally with future plans, schedules, and explicit endpoints.

Hétfő óta itthon dolgozom.

I have been working from home since Monday.

Hétfőtől itthon dolgozom.

Starting Monday, I work/will work from home.

The second can also describe a schedule already in effect if context supplies that interpretation. The key is not tense alone: óta asks the listener to consider the elapsed interval, while -tól/-től identifies the left boundary.

With a right endpoint, -tól/-től ... -ig is required:

Hétfőtől szerdáig itthon dolgozom.

I work from home from Monday through Wednesday.

Using óta here would clash with the closed endpoint because óta conventionally extends to the reference time.

Óta versus -tól/-től fogva

Adding fogva strengthens the “from that point onward” presentation. It is common in emphatic commitments, lifelong descriptions, and elevated or regulatory prose.

Gyerekkora óta rajzol.

He has been drawing since childhood.

Gyerekkorától fogva érdekelte a rajzolás.

He was interested in drawing from childhood onward.

The first looks back from now at an activity that continues. The second frames childhood as the origin of a lasting disposition and is more written (formal/literary). The possessive forms differ because gyerekkora óta has bare possessed gyerekkora, while gyerekkorától fogva adds ablative -tól after the possessive stem.

In everyday speech mostantól is often more economical than mostantól fogva. The longer form is grammatical, but repeated use can sound ceremonial.

Tense after óta

There is no “óta requires present tense” rule. Choose tense from the situation.

2018 óta Budapesten lakik.

She has lived in Budapest since 2018.

2018 óta ötször költözött.

She has moved five times since 2018.

2018 óta nem találkoztunk.

We have not met since 2018.

The ongoing state lakik is present. The bounded repeated moves are past költözött. The nonoccurrence is conventionally expressed with past nem találkoztunk. In a past frame, even an ongoing-at-that-time state is past: Akkor már tíz éve ott lakott “At that time she had lived there for ten years.”

💡
After óta, ask whether the predicate is a state holding at the reference time or one or more bounded events inside the interval. That aspectual distinction predicts tense better than the English present perfect.

Duration, completion time, or endpoint

Four common structures divide English for/in/until meanings:

StructureCore meaningExample
accusative durationneutral amount of activitykét órát olvastam
-n keresztülactivity persists through spankét órán keresztül olvastam
alattcompletion within spankét óra alatt elolvastam
-igendpointkettőig olvastam

Két órán keresztül olvastam a jelentést.

I read the report for two hours.

Két óra alatt elolvastam a jelentést.

I read the report in two hours.

The first does not entail completion; the second naturally does because perfective elolvastam plus alatt measures the time needed to reach the result.

Kettőig olvastam, aztán elindultam.

I read until two, then I left.

Here kettőig is a clock endpoint, not a two-hour duration. Két óráig olvastam can be ambiguous between “until two” and “for two hours”; use kettőig or két órán keresztül when clarity matters.

Előtte, azelőtt, utána, and azután

Előtte/utána are person-marked postpositional forms and can mean “before/after him, her, or it.” Azelőtt often means “before that time/previously,” and azután means “after that/then.” The lexicalized deictic forms are broader discourse adverbs.

A vizsga előtt tanultam, utána pihentem.

I studied before the exam and rested afterward.

Azelőtt soha nem jártam Szegeden.

Before then, I had never been to Szeged.

Előbb megvacsorázunk, azután megnézzük a filmet.

First we will have dinner, and then we will watch the film.

The forms overlap in some contexts, but utána makes an antecedent salient, while azután more readily advances a narrative sequence. Both are standard; the choice is informational, not a simple formal/informal split.

Keresztül versus át

Both can present traversal through time. Két héten keresztül explicitly spans two weeks; két héten át is a compact equivalent, frequent in both speech and writing. Keresztül is heavier and can emphasize sustained continuity.

Két héten át minden reggel futottunk.

For two weeks, we ran every morning.

Két héten keresztül éjjel-nappal dolgoztak.

For two weeks, they worked day and night.

In bureaucratic prose, időtartamon keresztül can become needlessly heavy (formal/bureaucratic). A plain két évig is often clearer when only the endpoint or total duration matters.

Information structure

A temporal phrase can be background or corrective focus. With a verbal prefix, focus changes prefix placement.

A megbeszélés után elmentünk ebédelni.

After the meeting, we went to lunch.

A MEGBESZÉLÉS UTÁN mentünk el ebédelni, nem előtte.

We went to lunch AFTER THE MEETING, not before it.

The postposition remains after its noun in both versions. Focus sends el behind mentünk; it does not permit English preposition order.

Decision tree

  1. Is the anchor a noun phrase? Use NP + előtt/után.
  2. Is the anchor a finite clause? Use mielőtt/miután + clause.
  3. Does the interval run from a past start to the reference time? Use óta.
  4. Are you announcing or emphasizing a starting regime? Use -tól/-től, optionally fogva.
  5. Is an activity sustained for a span? Use an accusative duration or -n keresztül/-n át.
  6. Is a result completed within the span? Use alatt with an appropriate resultative predicate.
  7. Is only the final boundary relevant? Use -ig.

Diagnostic exercise

  1. “Before I call, I will check the number.” Finite anchor: Mielőtt telefonálok, ellenőrzöm a számot.
  2. “Before the call, I checked the number.” Nominal anchor: A hívás előtt ellenőriztem a számot.
  3. “I have been ill since Tuesday.” Ongoing state from an explicit start: Kedd óta beteg vagyok.
  4. “The rule applies from Tuesday through Friday.” Closed endpoints: A szabály keddtől péntekig érvényes.
  5. “I finished it in three days.” Completion within a span: Három nap alatt befejeztem.

Common Mistakes

❌ Után befejeztem a munkát, hazamentem.

Incorrect — után cannot introduce a finite clause in English word order.

✅ Miután befejeztem a munkát, hazamentem.

After I finished work, I went home.

❌ Most fogva minden nap gyakorlok.

Incorrect — temporal fogva requires a starting form in -tól/-től.

✅ Mostantól fogva minden nap gyakorlok.

From now on, I practice every day.

❌ Három hónap keresztül dolgoztam a tanulmányon.

Incorrect — temporal keresztül requires superessive marking on the duration.

✅ Három hónapon keresztül dolgoztam a tanulmányon.

I worked on the study for three months.

❌ Én után érkezett a futár.

Incorrect neutral personal form — után must carry the first-person ending.

✅ Utánam érkezett a futár.

The courier arrived after me.

Key Takeaways

  • Nominal anchors take postposed előtt/után; finite clauses take mielőtt/miután.
  • Óta profiles an elapsed interval; -tól/-től (fogva) foregrounds its left boundary.
  • Tense with óta follows predicate type and reference time, not English present-perfect form.
  • Distinguish duration keresztül, completion-time alatt, and endpoint -ig.
  • Personal endings and focused word order remain Hungarian even when English uses prepositions and independent pronouns.
