Hungarian places temporal postpositions after their anchor: a vizsga előtt “before the exam,” ebéd után “after lunch,” hétfő óta “since Monday.” The surface pattern is not uniform. Előtt and után follow a bare noun phrase and take personal endings, óta has deictic forms such as azóta, while fogva and keresztül require a case-marked complement. This mixture shows how postpositions bridge free words, case government, and possessive-style paradigms.
Core architecture
| Relation | Construction | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| earlier than anchor | bare NP + előtt | indulás előtt | before departure |
| later than anchor | bare NP + után | ebéd után | after lunch |
| from anchor to reference time | bare time NP + óta | hétfő óta | since Monday |
| from anchor onward | -tól/-től + fogva | mától fogva | from today onward |
| throughout a span | -n/-on/-en/-ön + keresztül | két órán keresztül | for two hours |
| bounded interval | -tól/-től ... -ig | hétfőtől péntekig | from Monday to Friday |
The required case before fogva or keresztül is part of the construction. It is not optional decoration. By contrast, adding a case ending before előtt or után normally produces the wrong structure.

The temporal postposition usage page develops the discourse choices behind this architecture.
Előtt and után with nominal anchors
The anchor can name a clock time, an event, or a period. Modifiers stay inside the noun phrase before the postposition: a fontos találkozó előtt, a hosszú út után.
Tíz perccel a megbeszélés előtt érkeztem.
I arrived ten minutes before the meeting.
A hosszú út után mindannyian fáradtak voltunk.
After the long journey, we were all tired.
The measure phrase tíz perccel states the distance from the anchor and uses instrumental -val/-vel, with consonant assimilation: perc + -vel → perccel. It does not replace postposition előtt.
Spatial előtt has the same form: a ház előtt “in front of the house.” Temporal meaning comes from an event or time anchor, not from a different suffix.
Personal forms of előtt and után
When the anchor is a person or a previously mentioned event, előtt and után can take possessive-style person endings.
| Person | before/in front of | after/behind |
|---|---|---|
| I | előttem | utánam |
| you (singular) | előtted | utánad |
| he/she/it | előtte | utána |
| we | előttünk | utánunk |
| you (plural) | előttetek | utánatok |
| they | előttük | utánuk |
Réka előttem érkezett, Péter pedig utánam.
Réka arrived before me, and Péter after me.
A vizsga előtt nagyon izgultam, utána viszont megkönnyebbültem.
I was very nervous before the exam, but afterward I felt relieved.
In the second example utána means “after it,” referring back to a vizsga. English can use an independent pronoun after a preposition; Hungarian normally places the reference on the postposition itself, not ő után for neutral “after him/her.”
Óta and its deictic relatives
Óta follows a starting point and presents a span continuing to the relevant reference time: tegnap óta, 2019 óta, a költözés óta. It does not have an ordinary full personal paradigm. Hungarian instead uses azóta “since then,” mióta? “since when/how long?”, and amióta “since” before a clause.
2019 óta ugyanabban a lakásban lakom.
I have lived in the same apartment since 2019.
Tegnap óta háromszor hívtam az ügyfélszolgálatot.
I have called customer service three times since yesterday.
Óta does not mechanically determine verb tense. An ongoing state commonly uses Hungarian present lakom, where English uses present perfect. Completed occurrences inside the continuing interval use past hívtam. In a past narrative, a state continuing to a past reference point also uses past.
Már két éve ott dolgozott, amikor új vezetőt kapott a csapat.
She had already worked there for two years when the team got a new manager.
The starting-point phrase may be replaced by azóta after it has been established: Tavaly költözött ide; azóta itt lakik.
-tól/-től fogva
Temporal fogva requires an ablative-marked starting expression: mától fogva, ettől a naptól fogva, gyerekkorától fogva. The suffix obeys vowel harmony, but fogva itself remains unchanged.
Mostantól fogva minden számlát elektronikus úton küldünk.
From now on, we will send every invoice electronically.
Gyerekkorától fogva érdekelte a csillagászat.
He was interested in astronomy from childhood onward.
The shorter mostantól or gyerekkora óta is often more conversational. Fogva makes the starting boundary and onward continuation explicit and can sound emphatic or written (formal/literary depending on context).
-n keresztül
Temporal keresztül generally follows a superessive-marked duration phrase: két órán keresztül, egész héten keresztül, éveken keresztül. The case ending harmonizes; keresztül does not change.
Két órán keresztül vártunk a sürgősségin.
We waited in the emergency department for two hours.
Egész éjszakán keresztül esett az eső.
It rained throughout the night.
This construction foregrounds the span or continuity. The simpler accusative duration két órát vártunk is often equally grammatical but less explicitly “throughout.”
Temporal cases and endpoints
Hungarian often uses a case rather than a postposition for conventional calendar or clock relations: hétfőn “on Monday,” januárban “in January,” hatkor “at six,” hétfőtől “from Monday,” péntekig “until Friday.” A relational event anchor favors a postposition: a vizsga előtt.
Hétfőtől péntekig reggel nyolctól délután négyig dolgozom.
I work from Monday to Friday, from eight in the morning until four in the afternoon.
The beginning takes harmonic -tól/-től; the endpoint takes invariant -ig. Óta differs because it normally leaves the right endpoint open at the current reference time.
Segmentation exercise
- vizsga előtt = bare event noun vizsga
- postposition előtt.
- után-am = postposition stem után
- first-person singular ending -am.
- hétfő óta = bare starting-point noun hétfő
- invariant postposition óta.
- gyerekkor-om-tól fogva = noun + first-person possessive -om
- ablative -tól
- fogva.
- ablative -tól
- két órá-n keresztül = quantified noun két óra with lengthened á before superessive -n
- keresztül.
- péntek-ig = endpoint noun + invariant terminative -ig.
Common Mistakes
❌ Előtt a vizsga alig aludtam.
Incorrect — előtt follows its nominal anchor.
✅ A vizsga előtt alig aludtam.
I barely slept before the exam.
❌ Péter én után érkezett.
Incorrect neutral personal form — után takes a first-person ending.
✅ Péter utánam érkezett.
Péter arrived after me.
❌ Két óra keresztül vártam.
Incorrect — temporal keresztül requires superessive marking on the duration.
✅ Két órán keresztül vártam.
I waited for two hours.
❌ Hétfő fogva ez lesz az új szabály.
Incorrect — temporal fogva requires a -tól/-től starting form.
✅ Hétfőtől fogva ez lesz az új szabály.
This will be the new rule from Monday onward.
Key Takeaways
- Előtt, után, óta follow their bare nominal time anchor.
- Előtt and után have personal forms: előttem, utána, utánunk.
- Óta uses tense according to event structure and reference time, not an English tense formula.
- Fogva requires -tól/-től; keresztül requires a superessive duration form.
- Temporal cases efficiently mark calendar points and endpoints, while postpositions relate events and spans.
