Hungarian directive forms cannot be ranked on a single scale from rude to polite. A direct imperative is right in an emergency, tessék can be welcoming or routine, and a conditional question can sound considerate or passive-aggressive. The decisive factors are obligation, burden, social distance, and whether the addressee genuinely has a choice. Review the forms page for morphology and the usage page for common scenes.
Imperative or conditional question?
The imperative presents the requested action as expected. A conditional tudna/tudnál question presents ability as open and conventionally gives more room for refusal.
Kapcsold le a lámpát, amikor kimész!
Turn off the light when you leave! (informal routine)
Le tudnád kapcsolni a lámpát? Innen nem érem el.
Could you turn off the light? I can't reach it from here. (informal favor)
The first suits household coordination. The second recognizes that the speaker is imposing. Replacing every imperative with a conditional would be unnatural in warnings:
Álljon meg, veszélyes továbbmenni!
Stop; it is dangerous to go farther! (formal/urgent)
Meg tudna állni? would sound like a negotiated favor rather than an urgent safety instruction.
Tudna or meg tudná with a definite object?
Object definiteness affects the finite modal. Without a definite object, general tudna is natural. With a definite third-person object, definite tudná is required in careful standard usage.
Tudna egy kicsit segíteni?
Could you help a little? (formal)
Meg tudná nyitni ezt a mellékletet?
Could you open this attachment? (formal)
The prefix meg stands before the modal in neutral order. The spelling difference in tudna/tudná is grammatical, not merely an optional accent.
Kérek, kérnék, or kérném?
Kérek is a direct present request and can be polite with appropriate setting and intonation. Conditional kérnék softens an indefinite order. Definite kérném identifies a known item.
Kérek még vizet.
I'd like some more water.
Kérnék egy pohár szódát.
I'd like a glass of soda.
Kérném a félretett könyvet.
I'd like the book that was put aside for me.
English please does not choose among these. Reference and definiteness do, while conditional mood adjusts stance.
Legyen szíves or tessék?
Legyen szíves explicitly frames compliance as kindness and works well for a courteous instruction. Tessék + infinitive conventionally invites entry, seating, taking, speaking, or proceeding.
Legyen szíves, írja rá a borítékra a feladó címét!
Please write the sender's address on the envelope. (formal instruction)
Tessék bejönni és helyet foglalni!
Please come in and take a seat! (formal invitation)
Tessék kitölteni az űrlapot is possible but can sound like a routine institutional command. Legyen szíves kitölteni... foregrounds courteous cooperation. Neither is a universal translation of please.
Csak as encouragement or threat
Welcoming csak reduces hesitation; sharply stressed csak can intensify a warning.
Gyere csak be, már mindenki téged vár!
Do come in; everyone is already waiting for you! (encouraging)
Nyúlj csak hozzá még egyszer!
Just touch it one more time! (warning/threatening intonation)
The word sequence alone does not settle politeness. Prosody, facial expression, and the consequence implied by context reverse the effect.
Offer, request, or permission?
Question form may conceal different speech acts. Kérsz egy kávét? is an offer; Kérhetek egy kávét? requests permission or asks whether coffee is available; Kérnék egy kávét places an order.
Kérsz egy kávét, amíg várunk?
Would you like a coffee while we wait? (offer)
Kérhetek még egy kávét, vagy már zár a pult?
May I have another coffee, or is the counter closing? (permission/availability)
Kérnék még egy kávét, tej nélkül.
I'd like another coffee, without milk. (order)
These forms can occur in the same café but distribute initiative differently. English Can I have...? may correspond to either the second or third depending on whether availability is genuinely at issue.
Invitation or command?
An imperative can function as an invitation when the action benefits the addressee and the context is welcoming. Ülj le! between friends is often hospitality, not authority. Formal Foglaljon helyet! does the same through third person.
Maradj vacsorára, főztem elég levest!
Stay for dinner; I've made enough soup! (informal invitation)
Foglaljon helyet, mindjárt kezdjük a megbeszélést!
Please take a seat; we'll begin the meeting shortly! (formal)
A genuine social invitation, however, often benefits from an interrogative formula such as Van kedved...? because it makes acceptance optional.
Van kedved pénteken eljönni velünk színházba?
Would you like to come to the theater with us on Friday? (informal)
Accepting or merely acknowledging?
Rendben accepts a task or arrangement. Szívesen can accept an invitation (“gladly”) or respond to thanks (“you're welcome”). Köszönöm alone may accept an object being handed over, but after an offer it can be ambiguous without kérek/nem kérek.
– Át tudnád venni helyettem a csomagot? – Rendben, itthon leszek.
– Could you receive the parcel for me? – All right, I'll be home.
– Kér még süteményt? – Köszönöm, nem kérek többet.
– Would you like more cake? – Thank you, I won't have any more.
An English speaker may say only köszönöm intending “no, thank you,” while a host hears gratitude without a clear answer. Add the acceptance or refusal explicitly.
Direct or relationship-preserving refusal?
Nem tudok often refuses more tactfully than nem akarok, because it presents a constraint rather than rejection of the person or event. Do not invent an excuse, but acknowledge the invitation or request.
Köszönöm, szívesen mennék, de aznap este dolgoznom kell.
Thank you; I'd gladly go, but I have to work that evening.
Most sajnos nem tudom vállalni, de hétfőn segíthetek.
Unfortunately I can't take it on now, but I can help on Monday.
The alternative offer repairs social cooperation. In urgent or abusive situations, direct nem remains legitimate; politeness never requires consenting.
Information structure and insistence
Focused constituents can make a request corrective: A KÉK GOMBOT nyomja meg means “Press the BLUE button.” Neutral Nyomja meg a kék gombot simply instructs. Repetition or fronted csak can signal impatience.
A jobb oldali gombot nyomja meg, ne a pirosat!
Press the right-hand button, not the red one! (formal corrective instruction)
No amount of kérem erases a strongly corrective focus. Social force arises from prosody and information structure as well as formula.
Formal and informal bundles
Elnézést, legyen szíves megmutatni, hol találom az ügyfélszolgálatot!
Excuse me, could you please show me where customer service is? (formal)
Bocs, mutasd már meg, hol van az ügyfélszolgálat!
Hey, show me where customer service is, will you? (informal)
Formal elnézést, third-person formula, and infinitive form one bundle. Informal bocs, second-person imperative, and particle már form another; már can sound impatient outside a friendly relationship.
Decision tree
- Is immediate compliance necessary for safety or procedure? Use a person-matched imperative.
- Is this an optional favor with meaningful burden? Use tudnál/tudna, acknowledge the burden, and permit refusal.
- Are you ordering an indefinite item? Use kérnék; for a definite item, kérném.
- Are you giving a courteous instruction? Consider legyen szíves. Are you inviting movement or handing something over? Consider tessék.
- Are you encouraging hesitant action? Welcoming csak may help; avoid it if the intonation could sound threatening.
- Is this hospitality? Make acceptance/refusal explicit with kérek/nem kérek.
- Do title, person, verb agreement, formula, and indirectness belong to the same relationship?
Diagnostic exercise
Choose the best option.
- Fire alarm: Ki tudna menni? / Menjen ki az épületből!
- Formal request with definite attachment: Meg tudna nyitni ezt? / Meg tudná nyitni ezt?
- Handing over a receipt: Tessék. / Legyen szíves.
- Clear polite refusal of food: Köszönöm. / Köszönöm, nem kérek többet.
Answers: (1) Menjen ki az épületből!, because evacuation is not optional. (2) Meg tudná nyitni ezt?, definite agreement with ezt. (3) Tessék, the handover formula. (4) Köszönöm, nem kérek többet, because gratitude alone does not clearly refuse.
Common Mistakes
❌ Legyen szíves, vár itt!
Incorrect: the requested action needs the imperative várjon, not indicative vár.
✅ Legyen szíves, várjon itt!
Please wait here. (formal)
❌ Meg tudna nyitni a csatolt fájlt?
Incorrect general conjugation with the definite object a csatolt fájlt.
✅ Meg tudná nyitni a csatolt fájlt?
Could you open the attached file? (formal)
⚠️ Köszönöm.
‘Thank you.’ After an offer, gratitude alone may not make acceptance or refusal explicit enough.
✅ Köszönöm, nem kérek.
No, thank you.
