An accurate Hungarian sentence can still be wrong for its text. Headline compression becomes defective when copied into a report body; conversational azt mondta becomes monotonous in a source-sensitive article; an isolated vala turns a modern story into unintended parody. The solution is to choose a coherent register bundle: articles, evidence, information structure, nominal density, connectors, address, and ellipsis must point in the same direction.
For the core inventory first, consult the meaning-and-usage page. The contrasts below concern boundary cases rather than a fixed “formal equals good” scale.
Headline ellipsis versus complete prose
Headline Hungarian permits compression because layout, section, and typography supply context. A complete sentence in the body normally restores grammatical articles and participants.
Átadták a felújított rendelőt
Renovated clinic officially opened
Kedden átadták a felújított körzeti rendelőt.
The renovated district clinic was officially opened on Tuesday.
The first is (journalistic headline) and omits both an explicit actor and final punctuation. The second is (neutral journalistic prose). Its actor remains implicit through third-person plural átadták, but the article specifies the clinic and the time anchors the report.
Article omission is not automatic even in headlines. Removing an article must leave the intended reference recoverable:
A Duna áradása miatt lezárták a rakpartot
Embankment closed because of Danube flooding
Here a Duna retains its required article as a river name, and a rakpartot identifies the relevant embankment. Concision comes from the construction as a whole, not from deleting every a/az.
Attribution versus epistemic distance
The choice among X közlése szerint, értesüléseink szerint, úgy tudjuk, and állítólag determines who bears responsibility for a claim.
A mentőszolgálat közlése szerint két embert vittek kórházba.
According to the ambulance service, two people were taken to hospital.
Értesüléseink szerint két embert vittek kórházba.
According to our information, two people were taken to hospital.
Állítólag két embert vittek kórházba.
Reportedly, two people were taken to hospital.
The event is constant. The first names an institutional source; the second invokes the outlet's reporting (journalistic); the third leaves the source unspecified and creates distance. Állítólag is not a stronger version of attribution. In fact, it gives the reader less basis for assessing the claim.
In conversation, azt hallottam, hogy... “I heard that...” naturally marks hearsay:
Azt hallottam, hogy jövő héten újra kinyit a mozi.
I heard that the cinema is reopening next week.
That is appropriate (informal/neutral) personal evidence, not a substitute for precise sourcing in a report. Academic prose has another priority again: it normally cites a publication, author, or data set rather than an editorial úgy tudjuk.
Neutral order versus viewpoint order
Hungarian word order expresses what the paragraph treats as established and what it corrects or asserts as new. Matched pairs can report the same participants while answering different questions.
A szerződést a polgármester hétfőn írta alá.
The mayor signed the contract on Monday; Monday is the focused detail.
A szerződést hétfőn a polgármester írta alá.
It was the mayor who signed the contract on Monday.
In both, a szerződést is the topic. In the first, preverbal hétfőn answers “when?” In the second, preverbal a polgármester answers “who?” English translations often restore SVO and must add intonation or a cleft to preserve the Hungarian viewpoint.
A neutral all-new report may instead begin with the actor:
A polgármester hétfőn aláírta a szerződést.
The mayor signed the contract on Monday.
No order is inherently “more journalistic.” The preceding paragraph determines what is topical. A press text that fronts every object merely to sound Hungarian will feel mannered.
Journalistic versus academic nominal density
Both registers can contain nominal phrases, but they serve different readers. Journalism usually balances compression with immediate processing. Academic prose can maintain a technical taxonomy across a longer argument.
A kutatók szerint a tartós zajterhelés rontja az alvás minőségét.
According to the researchers, prolonged noise exposure reduces sleep quality.
A tartós környezeti zajterhelés alvásminőségre gyakorolt hatásának vizsgálata további adatgyűjtést igényel.
Investigating the effect of prolonged environmental noise exposure on sleep quality requires further data collection.
The first is accessible (journalistic) exposition with an explicit source and finite verb. The second is possible (academic) nominal style, but it demands more processing. Importing English noun stacks does not create either register; Hungarian still needs derivation, participial modifiers, possession, and case endings.
Modern literary voice versus archaism
Modern literary language can sound elevated without historical morphology. Compare a rhythmic contemporary sequence with an archaizing one:
A vonat eltűnt a kanyarban. A peronon csak a nedves újságpapír maradt.
The train vanished around the bend. Only the wet newspaper remained on the platform.
És lőn este, s a vándor szállást nem lele.
And evening came, and the traveler found no lodging.
The first is (literary) through image, rhythm, and selective order. The second is deliberately (archaic/literary): lőn and lele evoke older narrative language and biblical or historical stylization. Neither is a more correct version of the other.
Archaism must be sustained enough to be interpretable. A contemporary narrator who suddenly says mondá instead of mondta signals quotation, parody, or character voice. If none is intended, the switch is noise.
Dialect voice versus comic eye dialect
A genuine dialect feature belongs to a regional system. In literary dialogue, a small consistent cue may locate a character; random respelling merely marks the character as “other.”
– Mögvárlak a kapunál – mondta a szegedi asszony.
‘I'll wait for you by the gate,’ said the woman from Szeged.
– Megvárlak a kapunál – mondta a narrátor.
‘I'll wait for you by the gate,’ said the narrator.
The first contains mög- for standard meg-, representing Southern Great Plain ö-zés (regional: Szeged area). The second uses the standard. The dialect version is justified only if voice, place, and characterization support it. It does not license unrelated misspellings in the same character's speech.
Writers may also represent dialect through vocabulary or syntax rather than dense phonetic spelling. That choice is often more readable and less likely to caricature speakers. A dialect form can express local belonging, intimacy, age, or stance; it is not a direct index of education or intelligence.
Repairing translated prose
English encourages explicit subject pronouns, repeated possessives, long premodifying strings, and fixed SVO. Hungarian often omits recoverable pronouns and uses suffixes to show relations.
Miután a szóvivő befejezte a tájékoztatót, válaszolt az újságírók kérdéseire.
After the spokesperson finished the briefing, they answered the journalists' questions.
Repeating ő before the second verb would be contrastive, not a neutral equivalent of English they. Likewise, a translation must decide whether an English passive should remain formally passive-like, become active third-person plural, or foreground the affected object. There is no universal replacement.
A pályázat eredményét várhatóan pénteken teszik közzé.
The result of the call for applications is expected to be published on Friday.
This natural report uses object fronting, an evidential adverb, and active third-person plural. It preserves the institutional backgrounding of the actor without imitating the English passive word for word.
Decision tree
- Is the text a headline? Permit selective ellipsis, but keep reference recoverable.
- Is it report body prose? Restore full noun-phrase grammar and source relations.
- Is a claim attributed? Name the source with X közlése szerint when possible; use értesüléseink szerint or úgy tudjuk only for editorial knowledge.
- Is the prose academic? Prefer explicit conceptual relations and citations over journalistic hearsay markers.
- Is the desired effect modern literary? Shape rhythm, viewpoint, and imagery.
- Is a historical or parodic voice intended? Use coherent (archaic/literary) features.
- Is regional voice relevant to identity? Use attested, selective features and label them; otherwise keep the standard.
- Is the sentence translated? Rebuild topic, focus, possession, and ellipsis rather than preserving English order.
Diagnostic
Choose the best treatment.
- A two-line headline announces a new station: complete body syntax or selective ellipsis?
- A news report has an official fire-service statement: állítólag or a tűzoltóság közlése szerint?
- A contemporary interior monologue needs intensity: automatic vala or rhythm and fragments?
- A contract is already topical and Friday is the correction: place pénteken before or after the verb?
- A character from Szeged uses one attested ö-ző form: error or regional voice?
Answers: 1 selective headline ellipsis; 2 a tűzoltóság közlése szerint, because the source is known; 3 rhythm and fragments unless deliberate historical stylization is intended; 4 before the finite verb, as preverbal focus; 5 regional voice, provided the feature is coherent and contextually motivated.
Common Mistakes
Do not delete the article from a complete singular subject.
❌ Szóvivő válaszolt az újságírók kérdéseire.
Incorrect: the role noun lacks the article required in this body sentence.
✅ A szóvivő válaszolt az újságírók kérdéseire.
The spokesperson answered the journalists' questions.
Do not copy an English string of bare nouns.
❌ A megye tanács közlekedés bizottság terve vitát váltott ki.
Incorrect: the nouns lack the suffixes and derivation that identify their relationships.
✅ A megyei tanács közlekedési bizottságának terve vitát váltott ki.
The county council transport committee's plan sparked debate.
Do not use an explicit third-person pronoun as a neutral continuation.
❌ A szerkesztő elolvasta a cikket, majd ő kijavította a címet.
Incorrect for neutral continuity: explicit 'ő' creates an unsupported contrast.
✅ A szerkesztő elolvasta a cikket, majd kijavította a címet.
The editor read the article and then corrected the headline.
Do not place Hungarian szerint before its source like English according to.
❌ Szerint a rendőrség két utat lezártak.
Incorrect: 'szerint' follows its source, and the clause also lacks a well-formed source phrase.
✅ A rendőrség közlése szerint két utat lezártak.
According to the police statement, two roads were closed.
Key Takeaways
- Headline omission is selective and genre-bound; body prose needs complete grammatical relations.
- Named attribution, editorial knowledge, and unspecified hearsay place responsibility differently.
- Word order tracks topic and focus, so preserving English SVO may preserve facts but lose viewpoint.
- Modern literary rhythm, coherent archaism, and attested dialect voice are separate stylistic resources.
- Register emerges across the entire sentence: address, nominal density, connectors, order, evidence, and ellipsis must cohere.
