Administrative, Legal, and Academic Prose: Contrasts and Learner Traps

The central contrast in expert formal Hungarian is not “formal word versus ordinary word.” It is the choice between treating an event as a classified object and presenting it as an action with participants. Nominalizations, possessive chains, complex postpositions, impersonal predicates, and hedges can make relations exact; the same devices can also hide the logical skeleton of a sentence.

Review the inventory on the forms page and its discourse settings on the usage page. This page concentrates on boundary cases, matched alternatives, and diagnostics.

Stable category versus live event

Compare a document heading with a report of responsibility:

A pályázatok értékelése két szakaszban történik.

The evaluation of applications takes place in two stages. (formal description of a procedure)

Két független bíráló értékeli a pályázatokat.

Two independent reviewers evaluate the applications. (formal description of actors)

The nominalized értékelése makes the procedure the grammatical topic and permits classification into stages. The finite értékeli profiles the reviewers’ action. Neither is inherently more scholarly. If a methods section must show who judged the data, suppressing the actor weakens reproducibility; if a regulation defines the workflow regardless of personnel, the nominalization is efficient.

A lexicalized technical noun deserves protection even in plain-language revision. Adatkezelés, jogorvoslat, and hatálybalépés may carry defined meanings that an improvised finite paraphrase does not reproduce exactly. Keep the term, then explain its consequence in a finite sentence.

Az adatkezelés jogalapja a hozzájárulás. Az érintett a hozzájárulását bármikor visszavonhatja.

The legal basis for data processing is consent. The data subject may withdraw their consent at any time. (formal/legal with a defined term and a clear action)

Possession chain versus clause

Hungarian can mark several embedded of relations morphologically:

A kutatási terv módosításának kari jóváhagyása szükséges.

Faculty approval of the amendment to the research plan is required. (dense administrative)

A kutatási tervet csak akkor módosíthatják, ha a kar jóváhagyja a változtatást.

The research plan may be amended only if the faculty approves the change. (plain formal)

The first is compact and works in a checklist. The second displays condition, action, and approver, so it suits instructions to researchers. English speakers often reproduce an English noun stack but omit Hungarian possession marking. The opposite error is also possible: inserting -nak/-nek on every possessor creates a heavy chain. In a simple phrase a kar döntése is neutral; in an embedded chain a kar döntésének indokai makes the internal boundary visible.

Information structure can outweigh density. In A KAR hagyja jóvá a módosítást, preverbal a kar carries contrastive focus: the faculty, not the department, approves it. The dense phrase a módosítás kari jóváhagyása turns the approver into a modifier and loses that corrective force.

💡
If an actor answers a live question—who decided, who pays, who may object—give that actor a clause position. Do not bury contested responsibility inside a compound or possessive modifier.

Simple case versus complex postposition

Formal frames make semantic relations explicit, but they should not replace a simpler case suffix without adding meaning.

A jelentés alapján módosítottuk az ütemtervet.

We amended the schedule on the basis of the report. (the report is evidence or authority)

A jelentésről beszéltünk az ülésen.

We discussed the report at the meeting. (the report is the topic)

Alapján cannot stand in for every English on: it asserts a basis. Similarly, érdekében expresses a pursued purpose, not a beneficiary:

Az ügyfelek érdekében egyszerűsítettük az űrlapot.

We simplified the form in the interests of the clients. (purpose/benefit pursued)

Az ügyfeleknek új útmutatót készítettünk.

We prepared a new guide for the clients. (recipient or beneficiary)

Tekintetében restricts a domain and is sometimes useful in deliberate contrasts: A terv költségei tekintetében kedvező, időzítése tekintetében kockázatos. Outside such a contrast, A terv olcsó, de rossz az időzítése is clearer. Vonatkozásában is common (formal) but especially prone to bureaucratic overuse; often -ról/-ről, kapcsolatban, or a direct predicate says more.

Impersonal possibility, resultant state, or action?

Three superficially “passive” translations encode different structures.

A melléklet letölthető a honlapról.

The appendix can be downloaded from the website. (availability/possibility)

A melléklet fel van töltve a honlapra.

The appendix has been uploaded to the website. (resultant state)

A titkárság tegnap feltöltötte a mellékletet a honlapra.

The secretariat uploaded the appendix to the website yesterday. (event with agent and time)

Letölthető contains -hat/-het and describes what users can do. Fel van töltve describes the current result of a completed upload. The finite past reports the event. English is uploaded can correspond to either the state or a habitual procedure, so translating the surface passive is unsafe.

The formula sor kerül valamire “something takes place” is established in administrative language: A meghallgatásra pénteken kerül sor. It is not ungrammatical, but it often delays the content and suppresses an available verb. A meghallgatást pénteken tartják is shorter; A bizottság pénteken tartja a meghallgatást also names the organizer. Choose according to the information required, not prestige.

Hedge, evidential limit, or evasion?

Matched hedges answer different questions:

Az eredmények arra utalnak, hogy a kezelés csökkenthette a tüneteket.

The results suggest that the treatment may have reduced the symptoms. (evidence-based but causally cautious claim)

A kezelés valószínűleg csökkentette a tüneteket.

The treatment probably reduced the symptoms. (probability assessment without an explicit evidential source)

A vizsgált csoportban a kezelés csökkentette a tüneteket.

In the group studied, the treatment reduced the symptoms. (domain restriction, not an uncertainty hedge)

The first identifies an inferential relation and retains causal caution with csökkenthette. The second rates probability. The third states a result categorically but restricts its population. A responsible academic sentence may combine the first and third; indiscriminate stacking—feltehetően talán valószínűleg—does not create greater rigor.

Citation produces another boundary. Kiss (2020) szerint... attributes a proposition. Kiss (2020) adatai alapján arra következtetünk, hogy... makes the current authors responsible for an inference from Kiss’s evidence. Kiss bebizonyítja, hogy... is much stronger and should be used only if the cited work genuinely establishes proof.

Szabó (2019) leírása szerint a változat már a század elején elterjedt volt.

According to Szabó’s (2019) description, the variant was already widespread at the beginning of the century. (academic attribution)

Formal clarity versus accidental conversationality

English-speaking learners sometimes preserve conversational ellipsis, szerintem, and loose és akkor sequencing in a research report. Formal Hungarian normally converts those cues into an explicit source, relation, and scope. The reverse danger is an automatic bureaucratic conversion of every verb into a noun.

A második mérésnél megint magasabb lett az érték, úgyhogy szerintem ez számít.

At the second measurement the value was higher again, so I think this matters. (informal spoken assessment)

A második mérés magasabb értéke arra utal, hogy az eltérés nem véletlenszerű.

The higher value in the second measurement suggests that the difference is not random. (academic inference)

The formal version supplies an evidential relation and names the content of the inference. Yet if the data do not license non-randomness, the more formal sentence is still scientifically wrong. Register never substitutes for evidence.

💡
Audit a formal sentence on four levels: what is asserted, who owns the assertion, which evidence licenses it, and which population or condition limits it.

Decision tree

  1. Does the expression name a defined concept, field, heading, or repeatable procedure? Keep the technical noun. Otherwise test a finite verb.
  2. Does the reader need an actor, condition, or time sequence? Use a clause, even if a possessive chain is possible.
  3. Is the opening phrase evidence, purpose, cause, concession, domain, recipient, or topic? Select the postposition or case that names that exact relation.
  4. Is the sentence about possibility, a current result, or a completed action? Choose -ható/-hető, van + adverbial participle, or a finite verb respectively.
  5. Is certainty limited, evidence indirect, or scope restricted? Mark that particular limit; do not accumulate generic cautious words.
  6. Is responsibility legally, ethically, or methodologically relevant? Name the responsible actor.
  7. Does revision remove a defined term? Restore the term and explain it; otherwise prefer the clearer architecture.

Diagnostic exercise

Choose the form that best fits the stated purpose.

  1. A checklist heading: A mellékletek ellenőrzése / Az ügyintéző ellenőrzi a mellékleteket.
  2. A methods sentence identifying scorers: A válaszok értékelése megtörtént / Két képzett kódoló értékelte a válaszokat.
  3. A claim licensed by interviews: az interjúk alapján / az interjúk érdekében.
  4. A file that is currently in the completed-upload state: feltölthető / fel van töltve.
  5. A result that holds only in the observed sample: talán / a vizsgált mintában.

Answers: (1) A mellékletek ellenőrzése compactly names the procedural item. (2) The finite sentence names the scorers and improves reproducibility. (3) Az interjúk alapján marks an evidential basis; érdekében would mark purpose. (4) Fel van töltve reports the resultant state; feltölthető merely says uploading is possible. (5) A vizsgált mintában gives the exact domain restriction; talán would weaken certainty without specifying scope.

Common Mistakes

⚠️ A szabályzat tekintetében beszélgettünk a szünetben.

Grammatical but needlessly bureaucratic for an ordinary topic in casual conversation.

✅ A szabályzatról beszélgettünk a szünetben.

We talked about the regulations during the break. (neutral)

❌ A jelentés érdekében megváltoztattuk a tervet.

Wrong relation if the report supplied the evidence; érdekében presents the report as a goal or beneficiary.

✅ A jelentés alapján megváltoztattuk a tervet.

We changed the plan on the basis of the report. (formal)

❌ Az eredmények minden kétséget kizáróan talán igazolják a hipotézist.

Contradictory stance — certainty and possibility are asserted together.

✅ Az eredmények részben alátámasztják a hipotézist.

The results partly support the hypothesis. (academic, calibrated)

⚠️ A hiba kijavításra került Péter által tegnap.

Grammatical but English-passive-shaped and informationally awkward when the actor and time matter.

✅ Péter tegnap kijavította a hibát.

Péter corrected the error yesterday. (clear finite report)

Key Takeaways

  • Nominalization classifies an event; a finite verb presents an action and can foreground responsibility.
  • Possessive chains are compact, but clauses reveal actors, conditions, and contrastive focus more clearly.
  • Simple cases and complex postpositions differ in meaning, not merely formality.
  • -ható/-hető, van + adverbial participle, and finite verbs distinguish possibility, resultant state, and event.
  • Hedge the precise dimension that evidence limits: certainty, source, causality, population, or time.
  • Defined technical terms may survive plain-language revision; empty noun density should not.
