Compound Spelling and the Six-Syllable Rule: Forms and Core Pattern

Hungarian commonly writes the members of a true compound as one closed orthographic word: kávéfőző “coffee maker,” könyvespolc “bookshelf,” gyorsvonat “express train.” Long compounds may instead contain a structural hyphen, but the decision is not based on visual length alone. You must first identify the semantic members, then count both members and syllables.

This page defines the core architecture: closed compounds, the six-syllable rule for compounds containing more than two source words, hyphen placement, and boundaries with three identical consonant characters. The compound usage page develops meaning and register. All unlabeled forms follow neutral modern standard Hungarian.

Decide the semantic structure first

The six-syllable rule applies only after a sequence has been identified as a compound. Hungarian closed spelling signals that the members form one lexical or grammatically condensed unit, not merely two descriptions placed next to each other.

A kávéfőző a könyvespolc mellett van.

The coffee maker is beside the bookshelf.

A gyorsvonat tíz perc múlva indul.

The express train leaves in ten minutes.

Gyorsvonat names a train category. By contrast, gyors vonat is an ordinary phrase meaning any train that happens to be fast. English writes many noun–noun combinations with a space and uses hyphens inconsistently; Hungarian spacing carries its own grammatical and lexical information.

Not every frequent combination becomes one word. Conventional adjective–noun phrases and technical terms can remain separate. There is no purely acoustic test: consult a current spelling dictionary when lexical status is uncertain.

💡
Do not count syllables until you have drawn the semantic structure. The rule tells you how to format an established compound; it does not tell you whether a sequence is a compound in the first place.

The core 2-versus-3 rule

The popular name “six-syllable rule” hides its first condition. A subordinating compound made from two simple common words is written closed regardless of how many syllables it has. The syllable threshold matters for a multiple compound built from more than two source words.

StructureSyllablesStandard formReason
paradicsom + saláta7paradicsomsalátaonly two simple members
televízió + készülék8televíziókészülékonly two simple members
gép + kocsi + vezető6gépkocsivezetőmore than two members, but no more than six syllables
labda + rúgó + bajnokság7labdarúgó-bajnokságmore than two members and more than six syllables

The length convention becomes relevant only when both conditions are met: the compound contains more than two source words and exceeds six counted syllables. The current twelfth-edition orthographic rule says that such a form may be divided at its main structural boundary. This guide uses the conventional hyphenated presentation for readability, but the rule is permissive rather than an absolute ban on every closed variant.

Paradicsomsalátát készítettem vacsorára.

I made tomato salad for dinner.

Elromlott a régi televíziókészülék.

The old television set broke down.

A gépkocsivezető azonnal értesítette a rendőrséget.

The driver notified the police immediately.

A labdarúgó-bajnokság döntőjét vasárnap rendezik.

The football championship final will be held on Sunday.

These forms appear in everyday and (formal) writing alike. The rule is a readability convention, not a marker of elevated style.

Place the hyphen at the main boundary

The hyphen does not simply appear after the sixth syllable. It separates the compound's two largest immediate constituents. In labdarúgó-bajnokság, the structure is [labdarúgó] + [bajnokság]. In tehergépkocsi-vezető, it is [tehergépkocsi] + [vezető].

Tapasztalt tehergépkocsi-vezetőt keresünk nemzetközi fuvarokra.

We are looking for an experienced truck driver for international routes.

This sentence belongs naturally in a job advertisement (formal). Writing tehergép-kocsivezető would split the wrong semantic units, even if a mechanical syllable count seemed to invite that position.

💡
The hyphen is a bracket made visible: [labdarúgó]-[bajnokság], not a mark inserted at a fixed character or syllable position.

What counts in the syllable total?

Count the syllables of the compound members in their relevant dictionary forms. Derivational suffixes generally count because they help create the lexical compound member. Inflectional markers and case suffixes added to the completed compound do not change its established hyphenation.

Thus labdarúgó-bajnokságban keeps the hyphen of labdarúgó-bajnokság; locative -ban does not trigger a new count. The derivational suffix -i is a specific exception: if -i alone takes a multiple compound over six syllables, the word remains closed, as in munkaerőpiaci from six-syllable munkaerőpiac.

BaseAdded materialResultCounting effect
labdarúgó-bajnokság-banlabdarúgó-bajnokságbancase suffix does not alter the base hyphenation
munkaerőpiac-imunkaerőpiaci-i alone does not trigger the length hyphen
divatlap + szerkesztőségderivationally complex final memberdivatlap-szerkesztőségmore than two source words and over six counted syllables

A munkaerőpiaci helyzet gyorsan változik.

The labor-market situation is changing quickly.

A divatlap-szerkesztőség új fotóst keres.

The fashion-magazine editorial office is looking for a new photographer.

The full counting conventions contain further edge cases, including verbal particles and foreign elements. Those cases are genuinely difficult; for high-stakes (formal) publication, use an authoritative Hungarian spelling tool rather than guessing from visual length.

Established lexical exceptions also exist: the official rule lists closed forms such as pénzügyminisztérium “ministry of finance” and valószínűségszámítás “probability theory” despite their internal complexity. Syllable counting therefore supplements, rather than replaces, lexical verification.

Three identical consonant characters

If closing a compound would place three identical consonant characters together at the boundary, Hungarian inserts a hyphen. The hyphen prevents an opaque triple sequence while preserving both members.

MembersRejected resultStandard form
sakk + készlet*sakkkészletsakk-készlet
balett + táncos*baletttáncosbalett-táncos

A régi sakk-készletből hiányzik egy futó.

A bishop is missing from the old chess set.

A balett-táncosok minden reggel próbálnak.

The ballet dancers rehearse every morning.

This hyphen is unrelated to the six-syllable threshold: even a short two-member compound takes it when the triple-character condition arises.

Multigraphs remain complete at compound boundaries

The letters gy, ny, sz, zs, dzs are structural units. When the same multigraph occurs at both sides of a compound boundary, both letters are written in full: jegy + gyűrű → jegygyűrű, fény + nyaláb → fénynyaláb, dísz + szemle → díszszemle. These sequences do not consist of three identical consonant characters, so the triple-consonant hyphen rule does not apply.

A jegygyűrűt külön dobozban őrzik.

The engagement ring is kept in a separate box.

Pronunciation may merge or assimilate boundary consonants. Orthography nevertheless preserves the members. This is the same morpheme principle seen in népdal, where p is voiced before d but remains written p.

Suffixing a completed compound

Once the compound is built, an ordinary suffix attaches at its right edge. Vowel harmony is normally controlled by the final compound member: vasútállomás + -on → vasútállomáson, jegygyűrű + -vel → jegygyűrűvel. The suffix does not split the compound or erase an existing structural hyphen.

A vasútállomáson beszéltem a jegygyűrűről.

At the railway station, I talked about the engagement ring.

Segmentation exercise

Identify the semantic members, count the relevant syllables, and explain the spelling:

  1. paradicsomsaláta
  2. gépkocsivezető
  3. labdarúgó-bajnokság
  4. munkaerőpiaci
  5. sakk-készlet
  6. jegygyűrű

Answers: (1) paradicsom + saláta, two members, so it remains closed despite seven syllables. (2) gép + kocsi + vezető, three members and six syllables, so it is closed. (3) labda + rúgó + bajnokság, three members and seven syllables, so a hyphen marks the main boundary. (4) munka + erő + piac + -i; the six-syllable base is closed and -i alone does not force a hyphen. (5) The members would create three k characters, so a hyphen intervenes. (6) Both complete gy letters remain at the compound boundary; no hyphen is required.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying the English space in a lexical compound.

❌ Vettem egy új kávé főzőt.

Incorrect — the lexical compound kávéfőző is one word.

✅ Vettem egy új kávéfőzőt.

I bought a new coffee maker.

2. Applying the six-syllable threshold to a two-member compound.

❌ Elromlott a televízió-készülék.

Incorrect — a two-member subordinating compound remains closed regardless of length.

✅ Elromlott a televíziókészülék.

The television set broke down.

3. Placing the readability hyphen inside a main constituent.

❌ Elkezdődött a labda-rúgóbajnokság.

Incorrect — if this long compound is hyphenated, the mark belongs between its two main constituents.

✅ Elkezdődött a labdarúgó-bajnokság.

The football championship has begun.

4. Respelling a triple boundary by sound alone.

❌ Megtaláltam a sakkészletet.

Incorrect — sakk + készlet requires the boundary spelling sakk-készlet.

✅ Megtaláltam a sakk-készletet.

I found the chess set.

5. Dropping diacritics inside a long compound.

❌ A labdarugo-bajnoksag döntője vasárnap lesz.

Incorrect — ú, ó, and á remain required inside compounds.

✅ A labdarúgó-bajnokság döntője vasárnap lesz.

The football championship final will be on Sunday.

Key Takeaways

Semantic structure comes first. Two-member subordinating compounds remain closed regardless of syllable count; compounds of more than two source words may take a readability hyphen above six counted syllables, placed at the main structural boundary. Triple identical consonant characters trigger a separate hyphen rule, while multigraph boundaries and assimilated pronunciation preserve the underlying members.
