Hungarian compound spelling records grammatical and semantic structure, not merely pauses or fluent pronunciation. The hard cases therefore require two decisions: first, whether the words form one lexical unit; second, if they do, whether that unit is written solid or divided by a hyphen. This page concentrates on those contrasts; review the core forms and typical uses for the basic system.
One lexical concept or an ordinary phrase?
A modifier and noun are normally separate when the modifier simply describes the noun in the current situation. They are normally solid when together they name an established kind, role, or concept. Stress can help in speech, but spelling is based on the conventional analysis of the expression, not on how emphatically one speaker happens to say it.
Compare gyors vonat, any train that is moving fast, with gyorsvonat, the conventional category “express train.” The same words can therefore produce a real minimal contrast.
Ez egy meglepően gyors vonat.
This is a surprisingly fast train.
A gyorsvonat tíz perc múlva indul Szegedre.
The express train leaves for Szeged in ten minutes.
The distinction can change the identity of a person. A magyar tanár is a teacher who is Hungarian; a magyartanár teaches Hungarian language and literature. In normal speech the intended meaning is often recoverable from context, but formal writing must still encode it.
Az új magyar tanár két éve költözött ide Kolozsvárról.
The new Hungarian teacher moved here from Cluj two years ago.
A magyartanár kijavította a fogalmazásomat.
The Hungarian-language teacher corrected my essay.
Focus does not create or dissolve a lexical compound. In nem a gyorsvonat, hanem a személyvonat, contrastive emphasis falls on the names of two train types, but both remain solid. Conversely, emphasizing nagyon gyors vonat does not turn the phrase into a compound.
Nem a gyorsvonatra szálltam fel, hanem a személyvonatra.
I got on the local train, not the express train.
Two components versus three or more
The often-quoted “six-syllable rule” is not a general instruction to hyphenate every long word. A compound with only two components is normally solid however many syllables it contains. The rule becomes relevant when a compound has more than two components. If that multi-component compound has more than six syllables, it is divided at its main structural boundary.
This means that structure and syllable count must both be checked. Matematikatanítás is formed from two simple common-word components, matematika + tanítás, and remains solid despite its length. By contrast, a compound such as munkaerő-nyilvántartás has at least three components and more than six syllables, so the main boundary receives a hyphen.
| Structure | Syllable condition | Normal spelling |
|---|---|---|
| Two simple common-word components | Any length | Solid: matematikatanítás |
| Three or more components | Six syllables or fewer | Solid: gépkocsivezető |
| Three or more components | More than six syllables | Hyphen at the main boundary: dokumentumfilm-bemutató |
Inflectional endings do not normally enter the count: adding -ban to a compound does not suddenly change its dictionary spelling. Most derivational suffixes do count, however, so derivation can affect a complex word's analysis. The -i adjective-forming suffix is a special exception in the official counting convention. There is no reliable English intuition for this calculation; at C1, a dictionary or an official spelling resource is appropriate for rare technical formations.
A dokumentumfilm-bemutató után beszélgettünk a rendezővel.
After the documentary screening, we talked with the director.
A matematikatanítás módszereiről tartottak konferenciát.
They held a conference on methods of teaching mathematics.
Lexicalized exceptions do exist, including long forms conventionally written solid. Examples include pénzügyminisztérium and valószínűségszámítás. Their spelling must be learned as part of the word. In edited (formal) and (academic) prose, verify a doubtful specialist term rather than mechanically forcing in a hyphen. Spaces and omitted accents occur in hurried (informal) messages, but that makes them nonstandard spellings, not accepted register variants. An author may deliberately separate or join elements for visual or rhythmic effect (literary); such marked typography does not change the spelling expected in ordinary prose.
Which boundary gets the hyphen?
The hyphen marks the main semantic division, not simply the point after the sixth syllable. Parse the compound into meaningful blocks. Könyvritkaság-gyűjtemény is a collection of rare books: könyvritkaság modifies gyűjtemény. A hyphen after an arbitrary syllable would obscure that structure.
A könyvritkaság-gyűjteményt csak előzetes engedéllyel lehet kutatni.
The rare-book collection may be consulted only with prior permission.
An already hyphenated proper-name or abbreviation construction keeps its visible boundary when a further element is attached: Nobel-díj-átadás, C-vitamin-adagolás, tb-járulék-csökkentés. Multiple hyphens may look heavy, but in careful writing they preserve the recoverable pieces. Often the clearest stylistic solution is to unpack an unwieldy compound into a phrase: a tervezőiroda vezetője is easier to process than an unnecessarily dense job-title formation.
Triple consonants: compound boundary versus suffix boundary
Hungarian normally simplifies three identical consonant letters created by ordinary suffixation: toll + -lal → tollal. A compound boundary behaves differently. Both component forms must remain visible, so a hyphen prevents a run of three identical letters: sakk + kör → sakk-kör, balett + táncos → balett-táncos.
A sakk-kör csütörtök esténként találkozik a könyvtárban.
The chess club meets in the library on Thursday evenings.
A balett-táncos sérülés után tért vissza a színpadra.
The ballet dancer returned to the stage after an injury.
This is an orthographic contrast, not permission to ignore pronunciation. Fluent speech may assimilate sounds at a boundary, but the written form preserves the morphemes. Hungarian multigraphs are also complete letters for spelling purposes: kulcs + csomó → kulcscsomó, fény + nyaláb → fénynyaláb, jegy + gyűrű → jegygyűrű. Do not delete part of cs, ny, or gy because the boundary sounds compressed.
A jegygyűrűt otthon felejtettem a fürdőszobában.
I left my wedding ring at home in the bathroom.
Egy keskeny fénynyaláb szűrődött be a függöny mellett.
A narrow beam of light came in beside the curtain.
A practical decision tree
- Is this one conventional lexical concept? If no, write an ordinary phrase: gyors vonat. If yes, continue.
- Is the expression a coordinative pairing or a special proper-name construction? Those have their own hyphen rules; do not apply the six-syllable rule blindly.
- Does a compound boundary create three identical consonant letters? If yes, preserve both bases with a hyphen: sakk-kör.
- Are there only two compound components? Normally write them solid, regardless of length.
- Are there more than two components? Count the relevant syllables. Up to six, normally solid; above six, place a hyphen at the main semantic boundary.
- Is it a known lexical exception or a highly specialized coinage? Check an authoritative dictionary. If the construction is difficult to parse, rephrase it.
Common Mistakes
English encourages spaces between noun modifiers, while Hungarian lexical categories are frequently solid. The reverse error occurs when learners join any adjective to a noun.
❌ A gyors vonat öt perccel hamarabb indul.
Incorrect for the train category: the intended meaning is 'express train,' not merely a train that happens to be fast.
✅ A gyorsvonat öt perccel hamarabb indul.
The express train leaves five minutes earlier.
The six-syllable rule does not license a mechanically positioned hyphen in every long word.
❌ A matematika-tanítás új módszereiről beszéltek.
Incorrect: a compound of two simple common-word components remains solid despite its length.
✅ A matematikatanítás új módszereiről beszéltek.
They discussed new methods of teaching mathematics.
At a compound boundary, spelling must retain both consonantal pieces, even if casual speech makes them hard to separate.
❌ A sakkör idén új kezdőcsoportot indít.
Incorrect: simplifying the three k letters hides the two compound members.
✅ A sakk-kör idén új kezdőcsoportot indít.
The chess club is starting a new beginners' group this year.
Multigraphs must also remain intact.
❌ A jegyűrű belső oldalába egy dátumot gravíroztak.
Incorrect: the gy at the end of jegy and the gy at the start of gyűrű must both remain visible.
✅ A jegygyűrű belső oldalába egy dátumot gravíroztak.
A date was engraved inside the wedding ring.
Accents are letters, not optional decoration; changing ű to u does not produce an acceptable informal spelling.
❌ A könyvritkaság-gyüjteményt digitalizálják.
Incorrect: gyűjtemény requires the long front rounded vowel ű.
✅ A könyvritkaság-gyűjteményt digitalizálják.
They are digitizing the rare-book collection.
Diagnostic
Choose the form that fits each meaning.
- “a teacher of Hungarian”: magyar tanár / magyartanár
- “a surprisingly fast train”: gyors vonat / gyorsvonat
- “chess club”: sakkör / sakk-kör
- “documentary screening”: dokumentumfilmbemutató / dokumentumfilm-bemutató
Answers: 1. magyartanár, because the two elements name a teaching specialization. 2. gyors vonat, because gyors is a situational description rather than the established train category. 3. sakk-kör, because the compound boundary would otherwise create three k letters. 4. dokumentumfilm-bemutató, because the formation contains more than two components, exceeds six syllables, and divides structurally into dokumentumfilm + bemutató.
Key Takeaways
First decide whether the expression is one lexical compound or a free phrase. Then recover its component boundaries, count components and syllables where the six-syllable rule applies, and finally check special consonant-boundary spelling. English spacing and a casual pronunciation are never sufficient by themselves.
