Compound Nouns: Forms and Core Pattern

Hungarian compound nouns normally place the semantic head last: könyvesbolt is a kind of bolt “shop,” and fogkefe is a kind of kefe “brush.” The preceding element narrows the head's meaning. A lexical compound behaves as one noun for neutral stress, spelling, harmony, plural marking, and case suffixes.

Head-final structure

CompoundPartsHead-final interpretation
könyvesboltkönyv + -es + bolta shop for books
fogkefefog + kefea brush for teeth
buszmegállóbusz + megállóa stop for buses
hálószobaháló + szobaa room for sleeping
aranygyűrűarany + gyűrűa ring made of gold

The head determines the basic word class and core reference. Reversing the elements either produces a different word or no established word at all: könyvesbolt is not boltkönyv. English also has compounds, but English spelling alternates unpredictably between spaces, hyphens, and solid forms; Hungarian lexical compounds are much more often written solid.

A könyvesbolt este hétig van nyitva.

The bookshop is open until seven in the evening.

A fogkefémet otthon felejtettem.

I left my toothbrush at home.

A buszmegálló a gyógyszertár előtt van.

The bus stop is in front of the pharmacy.

Semantic relations are learned with the compound

The first element can express purpose (fogkefe), content or object (könyvesbolt), location/function (hálószoba), material (aranygyűrű), user (gyerekruha “children's clothing”), or the object of an event (nyelvtanulás “language learning”). There is no single hidden preposition between the two nouns.

A gyerekruhákat a második emeleten találod.

You'll find the children's clothes on the second floor.

A nyelvtanulás sok türelmet igényel.

Language learning requires a lot of patience.

Productive formation lets speakers create interpretable new compounds, especially in technical or administrative contexts. Nevertheless, conventional meaning is lexical. Szemüveg literally contains szem “eye” and üveg “glass,” but means “glasses/spectacles”; its meaning is not calculated fresh each time.

💡
Read from the right: identify the head, then ask how the first element restricts it. Do not insert one fixed English preposition between every pair.

One main stress in the neutral compound

Hungarian normally stresses the first syllable of a word. A solid compound functions as one prosodic word with its main stress at the beginning: KÖNYVesbolt, BUSZmegálló. A long compound may have weaker secondary prominence internally, and contrastive focus can add emphasis, but the neutral pattern is not two equal lexical stresses as in a free phrase.

This can support the spelling distinction between a lexical compound and an ordinary phrase, though meaning and convention remain decisive. Do not add artificial accent marks: stress is not written, while vowel length in á, é, í, ó, ő, ú, ű is.

A hálószoba csendesebb, mint a nappali.

The bedroom is quieter than the living room.

Inflection goes on the outer edge

A compound noun receives number, possession, and case as a whole. Internal elements do not separately inflect.

Két könyvesboltban is kerestem ezt a regényt.

I looked for this novel in two bookshops.

After a numeral, the whole compound remains singular: két könyvesboltban, not két könyvesboltokban. The case still attaches outside. This packages “in two bookshops” as két + könyvesbolt + -ban, where English uses a preposition and plural.

Harmony follows the final component

Because the suffix attaches to the compound's outer edge, the final component normally controls vowel harmony. Könyvesboltban is back because bolt is back; szemüvegben is front because üveg is front; tornacipőben is front because cipő is front.

A szemüvegem a hátizsákban van.

My glasses are in the backpack.

A tornacipődet hagyd az előszobában!

Leave your trainers in the hall.

The nearest vowel in the first component is irrelevant. Stem alternation in the final component remains active: háló + szoba + -ban → hálószobában, with final a → á before the case suffix.

💡
Inflect the compound as though its final component were carrying the suffix—because structurally it is. Preserve the entire compound, then add one outer suffix chain.

Spelling: solid, hyphenated, or separate

Established two-part subordinating compounds are normally solid: fogkefe, könyvesbolt, buszmegálló. A combination remains separate when it is an ordinary descriptive phrase rather than one lexical category: gyors vonat “a train that is fast” versus gyorsvonat “express train.”

More-than-two-component compounds longer than six syllables are normally divided at the main structural boundary: dokumentumfilm-bemutató. A compound boundary that would create three identical consonant letters takes a hyphen: sakk-kör. These rules preserve morphological structure; see the compound spelling page for full detail.

Principal exceptions

Some compounds are only partly transparent or historically lexicalized: szemüveg, napraforgó, jegygyűrű. Learn their exact spelling and meaning as vocabulary. Proper names, abbreviations, coordinate formations, and compounds containing already hyphenated elements follow additional spelling rules. Informal spacing found in messages is not automatically accepted standard spelling.

Hungarian grammatical gender plays no role. Magyartanár “teacher of Hungarian” can refer to any gender. Lexical tanárnő adds “female teacher,” but that is a choice of word, not agreement on the compound.

Segmentation exercise

  1. könyvesboltokban = könyv + -es + bolt + -ok + -ban: derivation inside the compound, then outer plural and case.
  2. fogkefémet = fog + kefe + -m + -et: final e → é, possessive, accusative.
  3. hálószobában = háló + szoba + -ban: outer case causes a → á.
  4. szemüvegben = szem + üveg + -ben: final component controls front harmony.
  5. két buszmegálló = numeral + singular compound; no plural -k.
  6. dokumentumfilm-bemutató = complex compound, hyphen at the main structural boundary.

Common Mistakes

❌ A könyves boltban találkozunk.

Incorrect for the established category 'bookshop': the compound is written solid.

✅ A könyvesboltban találkozunk.

We'll meet in the bookshop.

❌ Két buszmegállók vannak a téren.

Incorrect: after két, the compound noun and predicate stay singular.

✅ Két buszmegálló van a téren.

There are two bus stops in the square.

❌ A könyvekboltok este nyolcig nyitva vannak.

Incorrect: plural marking belongs on the outer edge, not inside the compound.

✅ A könyvesboltok este nyolcig nyitva vannak.

The bookshops are open until eight in the evening.

❌ Szemüvegban jobban látom a táblát.

Incorrect: harmony follows front-vowel üveg, requiring -ben.

✅ Szemüvegben jobban látom a táblát.

I can see the board better with my glasses on.

❌ A fogkefem a fürdőszobában maradt.

Incorrect: final e lengthens to é before the possessive ending.

✅ A fogkefém a fürdőszobában maradt.

My toothbrush was left in the bathroom.

Key Takeaways

Hungarian compounds are normally head-final lexical units. Neutral primary stress falls at the beginning, while number, possession, and case attach once at the outer edge. The final component controls harmony and its stem behavior remains active. Meaning determines whether a sequence is a compound or phrase; spelling then follows solid-word, six-syllable, and protected-boundary conventions.
