Compounding and Verbal-Prefix Lexicalization: Forms and Core Pattern

Hungarian builds vocabulary by joining stems into compounds and by combining verbs with elements traditionally called verbal prefixes (igekötők). A long written word is not necessarily a pile of equally productive endings. It may contain an established compound, a lexicalized prefix–verb unit, one or more derivational suffixes, and only then plural, possession, case, or verbal agreement.

The useful method is layered: first identify the lexical base, then any derivation, and finally the inflection required by the sentence. This page presents the architecture; the usage page develops the meanings and contexts.

Right-headed noun compounds

In an ordinary subordinate noun compound, the final member is the grammatical and semantic head. It determines what kind of thing the compound names, and outer inflection attaches to it.

CompoundStructureHeadInflected form
kerékpárútkerékpár + útan út “road/path”kerékpárutakon “on bicycle paths”
kávéfőzőkávé + főzőa főző “maker/cooker”kávéfőzőmet “my coffee maker (object)”
ügyfélszolgálatügyfél + szolgálata szolgálat “service”ügyfélszolgálatok “customer-service departments”
vasútállomásvas + út + állomásan állomás “station”vasútállomásainkról “about/from our railway stations”

Az új kerékpárúton reggelente sokan járnak munkába.

Many people commute to work on the new bicycle path in the mornings.

A vasútállomásokon éjfél után bezárnak a pénztárak.

The ticket offices at the railway stations close after midnight.

The plural and case are outer: vas-út-állomás-ok-on. They apply to stations, not separately to iron, roads, and stations. The head can retain its own stem alternation: út has plural stem ut-, hence kerékpárutak, not kerékpárútok.

💡
To find the head, ask what the whole object is. A kávéfőző is a kind of maker or appliance, not a kind of coffee; a kerékpárút is a kind of path, not a kind of bicycle.

Hungarian normally places primary word stress on the first syllable. A compound written as one word consequently begins one phonological word, though later constituents can carry weaker secondary prominence in careful speech. A freely formed phrase contains separate words, each capable of its own stress.

A hálószobába keresünk egy keskeny könyvespolcot.

We're looking for a narrow bookcase for the bedroom.

Hálószoba and könyvespolc are established compounds and are written together. But stress alone cannot decide every spelling contrast. Hungarian orthography distinguishes productive phrases, established compounds, and lexicalized expressions according to both structure and convention.

Two simple common-word members are normally written together regardless of length. For compounds containing more than two underlying words, the current spelling rules use a readability principle: up to six syllables the multiple compound is written together; beyond six syllables it may be divided with a hyphen at the main compound boundary. Inflectional endings do not count toward this total, while derivational suffixes generally do; the derivational -i is an explicit exception.

A munkaerő-nyilvántartást a személyzeti osztály negyedévente ellenőrzi.

The personnel department checks the workforce register quarterly. (formal)

Munkaerő-nyilvántartás is a long multiple compound divided at its main boundary. This rule does not license arbitrary hyphens wherever a word looks long, and established exceptions exist. In doubtful formal writing, consult a current spelling dictionary.

Verbal prefixes: one lexical unit, mobile syntax

When a verbal prefix immediately precedes its verb in neutral positive order, the two are written together: bemegy, felhív, elolvas, megbeszél. If syntax places the prefix after the verb, or another word intervenes, it is written separately.

EnvironmentFormExample
neutral positiveprefix+verbAnna bemegy.
predicate negationverb ... prefixAnna nem megy be.
identificational focusfocused X + verb + prefixCsak Anna megy be.
positive commandverb + prefixMenj be!
intervening modalprefix + modal + infinitiveBe kell menni.

Zita bement az irodába, de a többiek kint maradtak.

Zita went into the office, but the others stayed outside.

Zita végül nem ment be az irodába.

In the end, Zita didn't go into the office.

Spelling follows the actual position. Bement is one word because be directly precedes its verb; nem ment be has two words because negation triggers postverbal prefix order. The fact that the parts separate does not prove that they are unrelated lexically.

Transparent direction and aspectual extension

With motion verbs, prefixes often retain a clear directional meaning: bemegy “go in,” kimegy “go out,” felmegy “go up,” lemegy “go down,” átmegy “go across,” visszamegy “go back.” The place phrase still expresses the endpoint or path.

Munka után átmegyek a szomszéd épületbe.

After work, I'll go over to the neighboring building.

Other combinations extend the prefix into aspect. Elolvas presents reading as carried through to its endpoint, whereas olvas can name the activity. Megír typically presents a text as completed; ír can simply say that writing is taking place.

Este olvastam a kanapén, de a regényt még nem olvastam el.

I read on the sofa in the evening, but I haven't finished the novel yet.

These meanings are productive tendencies, not equations such as “el- always means completion.” Each established prefix–verb combination must also be stored as vocabulary.

Lexicalization creates new meanings

A prefixed verb can develop a meaning that is no longer predictable by adding a spatial gloss. Megért means “understand,” felvesz can mean “pick up,” “put on,” “record,” or “hire,” and ellát can mean “provide for/supply” or “treat.” Context selects among lexical senses.

A recepciós azonnal felvette a telefont.

The receptionist answered the phone immediately.

Nothing literally moves upward. Treating fel- here as a detachable translation of “up” produces the wrong analysis; felveszi a telefont is a conventional lexical unit.

A prefix can change valency

Lexicalization may change which complements a verb accepts. Compare néz valamit “watch something,” ránéz valamire “glance at something,” and megnéz valamit “look at/check something.” The prefix affects both meaning and case frame.

Ránéznél erre az üzenetre, mielőtt elküldöm?

Could you glance over this message before I send it?

Megnéznéd ezt az üzenetet, mielőtt elküldöm?

Could you check this message before I send it?

The first complement is sublative erre az üzenetre; the second is accusative ezt az üzenetet. English look at/check does not predict that contrast. Similarly, beszél valakivel valamiről means “talk with someone about something,” megbeszél valakivel valamit means “discuss something with someone,” and rábeszél valakit valamire means “persuade someone to do something.” Learn the full frame with the lexeme.

💡
A mobile prefix can be grammatically separable while the prefix–verb combination remains lexically established. Record ránéz valamire and megnéz valamit, not just isolated rá-, meg-, and néz.

Segmentation exercise

Analyze újrahasznosíthatóságáról “about its recyclability” from the inside outward:

  • hasznos — lexical adjective “useful”;
  • -ít — derives hasznosít, “utilize”;
  • újra- — creates the established verb újrahasznosít, “recycle/reuse”;
  • -hat — adds possibility;
  • — forms újrahasznosítható, “recyclable/reusable”;
  • -ság — derives the abstract noun “recyclability”;
  • -a — third-person singular possessive marker, “its”;
  • -róldelative/topic case, “about.”

The whole word is not eight interchangeable endings. Újrahasznosít is the lexical verb; -hat-ó-ság is derivation; -a-ról is outer inflection.

Common Mistakes

❌ vasutakállomásain

Incorrect internal plural—the whole compound denotes stations, so number and case belong at the outer edge.

✅ vasútállomásain

at its railway stations

❌ Zsófi nem elolvasta a teljes útmutatót.

Incorrect neutral prefix order under predicate negation.

✅ Zsófi nem olvasta el a teljes útmutatót.

Zsófi didn't read the entire guide.

❌ Ránéztem az új szerződést.

Incorrect government—the lexical verb ránéz selects -ra/-re.

✅ Ránéztem az új szerződésre.

I glanced over the new contract.

❌ munkaerő nyilvántartás

Incorrect separation—the established multiple compound is joined or divided at its main boundary, not written as a free phrase.

✅ munkaerő-nyilvántartás

workforce register

Key Takeaways

  • Noun compounds are normally right-headed, and plural, possession, and case attach to the completed compound.
  • Stress helps identify word units, while current spelling rules and lexical convention determine joining and hyphenation.
  • A verbal prefix is written with the verb only when it immediately precedes that verb.
  • Directional meanings can remain transparent, but many prefix–verb combinations acquire aspectual or lexical meanings.
  • Prefix lexicalization can change valency, so memorize the complement case with the whole verb.
  • Parse long words into lexicalization, derivation, and inflection instead of treating every segment as equally productive.
