The Sublative -ra/-re: Forms and Core Pattern

Sublative -ra/-re first marks motion onto a surface or toward a surface-construed destination. It also appears with events, deadlines, purposes, resulting prices, and the complements of many reaction predicates. The form is highly productive: choose -ra after a back-harmonic stem and -re after a front-harmonic stem. The harder question is whether Hungarian selects this destination network at all; sublative usage and sublative contrasts address that choice.

The two harmonic forms

Back vowels a, á, o, ó, u, ú select -ra. Front vowels select -re, including both unrounded e, é, i, í and rounded ö, ő, ü, ű. Unlike the superessive, sublative has no rounded-front third form.

Stem typeBaseSublativeSegmentation
backasztalasztalraasztal-ra
front unroundedszékszékreszék-re
front roundedföldföldreföld-re
long vowel-finalautóautóraautó-ra
final a lengthensfafárafá-ra
final e lengthenszenezenérezené-re

Final short a/e lengthen to á/é before the suffix. This is obligatory: postára, fára, zenére, never postara, fara, zenere. Other stems attach the ending directly, without a linking vowel.

Tedd a bögrét az asztalra!

Put the mug on the table!

A kabátot erre a székre tettem.

I put the coat on this chair.

A macska felmászott a fára.

The cat climbed up the tree.

In erre a székre, both demonstrative erre and noun székre bear sublative. Hungarian demonstratives agree with the noun in case.

💡
There are only two sublative allomorphs: back -ra and front -re. Rounded front stems such as föld and tükör still take -re: földre, tükörre.

The surface direction triple

Sublative is the destination member paired with static superessive and source delative.

RelationCaseExample
location onsuperessiveaz asztalon
movement ontosublativeaz asztalra
movement offdelativeaz asztalról

A telefon az ágyon van; este tettem az ágyra.

The phone is on the bed; I put it on the bed in the evening.

Interior destinations instead take illative -ba/-be: a dobozba “into the box.” Movement to a person's vicinity takes allative -hoz/-hez/-höz: Péterhez “to Péter's place.” Hungarian therefore has several equivalents of English to, each belonging to a different geometric network.

Vowel harmony with mixed and neutral stems

A stem whose non-neutral vowels are back takes -ra, even if it also contains e/é/i/í: papírra, telefonra, kollégára. Stems containing only neutral vowels may have lexical harmony. Many take -re, but important exceptions take -ra.

BaseSublativePattern
székszékrefront
vízvízrefront
hídhídralexical back harmony
célcélralexical back harmony
férfiférfiralexical back harmony

There is no perfect shortcut for neutral-vowel exceptions. Store at least one harmonic suffix with the noun; the same choice usually recurs across suffix families. See back–front vowel harmony.

Plural and possessive forms

Sublative follows plural and possessive morphology. The case remains the outer ending and preserves the noun's harmonic class.

MeaningFormSegmentation

onto the chairsszékekreszék-ek-re
onto my tableasztalomraasztal-o-m-ra
to my messageüzenetemreüzenet-e-m-re

Ne állj rá a papírokra!

Don't step on the papers!

Directional here is the separated verbal prefix of rááll, and it agrees semantically with a papírokra. Hungarian often repeats the direction through both verb prefix and case; this is normal, not redundant.

Events, institutions, and settlements

Nouns whose static location is superessive use sublative for destination. This includes many events, some institutions, and many Hungarian settlements.

Este koncertre megyünk a barátainkkal.

We're going to a concert with our friends this evening.

Ebédszünetben elszaladok a postára.

During my lunch break I'll run over to the post office.

Jövő héten Budapestre utazom.

I'm traveling to Budapest next week.

Their triples are koncerten – koncertre – koncertről, postán – postára – postáról, and Budapesten – Budapestre – Budapestről. But iskolában leads to iskolába, and Debrecenben to Debrecenbe. The lexical static form predicts the direction family.

Deadlines and intended occasions

Sublative can set a target time: the point by which something should be ready or the occasion for which it is planned.

A jelentést péntekre kell befejeznünk.

We have to finish the report by Friday.

Két órára foglaltam asztalt.

I booked a table for two o'clock.

This -ra/-re does not simply mean English on or for. Pénteken locates an event on Friday; péntekre sets Friday as its deadline or target occasion. Két órakor says “at two o'clock,” whereas két órára can mean “for two o'clock” or, in another context, “for two hours.” The full clause resolves the interpretation.

Purpose, price, and resulting value

A resource can be directed toward a purpose, and a quantity can change to a target value. These uses extend the destination schema.

Új számítógépre gyűjtök.

I'm saving up for a new computer.

A jegy ára tizenkétezer forintra emelkedett.

The ticket price rose to twelve thousand forints.

A megtakarításom egy részét euróra váltottam.

I exchanged part of my savings into euros.

In each clause, -ra/-re marks an endpoint: intended purchase, resulting price, or target currency. English uses for, to, and into respectively, confirming that no single preposition defines the Hungarian case.

Reaction frames

Many verbs and adjectives select sublative for the stimulus or target of a reaction: reagál valamire “react to something,” figyel valamire “pay attention to something,” büszke valakire “proud of someone,” allergiás valamire “allergic to something.”

Senki sem reagált az üzenetemre.

Nobody reacted to my message.

Nagyon büszke vagyok a húgomra.

I'm very proud of my younger sister.

These frames are lexical. English to in “react to” happens to align with destination imagery, but of in “proud of” reaches the same Hungarian case. Store the predicate with kire? mire?

💡
Learn reaction predicates as frames: reagál mire?, figyel mire?, büszke kire? A question word preserves the required case better than an English gloss.

Sublative personal pronouns

Personal pronouns use a special series rather than forms such as énre or tere:

PersonSublative pronoun
1st singularrám
2nd singularrád
3rd singular
1st pluralránk
2nd pluralrátok
3rd pluralrájuk

Rád vártam a bejáratnál.

I was waiting for you at the entrance.

Mindannyian büszkék vagyunk rájuk.

We're all proud of them.

For contrast, the pronoun base can be retained in reinforced forms: énrám, terád, őrá. These forms are emphatic or stylistically marked and can occur across registers; neutral language normally uses the shorter series.

Segmentation practice

  1. fárafá-ra: final a lengthens.
  2. földreföld-re: rounded front still selects -re.
  3. asztalokraasztal-ok-ra: plural before case.
  4. üzenetemreüzenet-e-m-re: possessed “my message” before case, with the regular possessed stem.
  5. BudapestreBudapest-re: surface-marked settlement destination.
  6. rájuk → pronominal sublative base rá- plus third-person plural marker.

Common Mistakes

❌ Tedd a könyvet az asztalba!

Incorrect if the book should go onto the table — -ba means into an interior.

✅ Tedd a könyvet az asztalra!

Put the book on the table!

❌ Három órakor foglaltam asztalt.

Wrong for the intended meaning ‘I booked a table for three’ — this says the act of booking happened at three.

✅ Három órára foglaltam asztalt.

I booked a table for three o'clock.

❌ Büszke vagyok a húgomtól.

Incorrect — büszke selects sublative, not a case copied from English ‘of/from.’

✅ Büszke vagyok a húgomra.

I'm proud of my younger sister.

❌ Énre ne várjatok!

Incorrect — the first-person singular sublative pronoun is rám.

✅ Rám ne várjatok!

Don't wait for me!

Key Takeaways

  • Back stems take -ra; all front stems take -re.
  • Final a/e lengthen to á/é, and neutral-vowel exceptions preserve lexical harmony.
  • Sublative is the destination partner of superessive -n and delative -ról/-ről.
  • Events, institutions, and settlements follow the triple selected by their lexical static form.
  • Deadlines, purposes, resulting prices, and reactions extend the idea of a target endpoint.
  • Pronouns use rám, rád, rá, ránk, rátok, rájuk, not nominative pronouns plus a suffix.
