The illative case -ba/-be marks a destination understood as an interior: házba “into the house,” kertbe “into the garden.” It is the goal member of the interior direction triple -ban/-ben “in,” -ba/-be “into,” -ból/-ből “out of.” The same inward pattern extends to institutions and changes of state, but this page concentrates on how to build and recognize the form.
The two harmonic forms
Use -ba after a back-vowel stem and -be after a front-vowel stem. Rounded front vowels ö, ő, ü, ű still select -be; the illative has no third rounded-front allomorph.
| Harmony class | Base | Illative | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| back | ház | házba | into the house |
| back | doboz | dobozba | into the box |
| front unrounded | kert | kertbe | into the garden |
| front unrounded | szekrény | szekrénybe | into the wardrobe |
| front rounded | fürdő | fürdőbe | into the bathroom |
| front rounded | hűtő | hűtőbe | into the refrigerator |
Tedd vissza a vajat a hűtőbe!
Put the butter back in the refrigerator!
A gyerekek beszaladtak a kertbe.
The children ran into the garden.
Behajtottunk az alagútba, és rögtön elvesztettük a térerőt.
We drove into the tunnel and immediately lost reception.
Words containing only neutral vowels e, é, i, í are not completely predictable. Many take the front form, such as székbe and vízbe, but some belong lexically to the back-harmony class, such as hídba and sírba. Learn such nouns with a common suffixed form; the back–front harmony page explains the larger pattern.
Final vowels and stem behavior
Final short a and e lengthen to á and é before the illative: szoba → szobába, táska → táskába, pince → pincébe, megye → megyébe. Other final vowels normally remain unchanged: autóba, kávéba, fésűbe.
A vendégek átmentek a nappaliba.
The guests went into the living room.
Rejtsd a kulcsot a cserepes növény mögötti résbe!
Hide the key in the gap behind the potted plant!
Not every stem alternation seen elsewhere appears before -ba/-be. For example, bokor has plural bokrok, but illative bokorba retains the stem vowel. Tér gives térbe, while a noun such as kéz gives regular kézbe. Build the case from the stem selected by this suffix; do not copy the plural stem mechanically.
The illative comes last
Case follows number and possession. Complete the noun phrase's internal morphology first, then attach -ba/-be.
| Structure | Form | Segmentation |
|---|---|---|
| singular | házba | ház-ba |
| ordinary plural | házakba | ház-ak-ba |
| singular possessed | házamba | ház-am-ba |
| possessed plural | házaimba | ház-ai-m-ba |
| possessed plural | könyveinkbe | könyv-ei-nk-be |
A számlákat külön mappákba rendeztem.
I sorted the invoices into separate folders.
Írd be a határidőket a naptáradba!
Enter the deadlines in your calendar!
English puts “into” or “in” before a possessive noun phrase. Hungarian builds naptár-ad-ba in the opposite direction: noun + “your” + illative. The case describes the destination of the entire possessed object.
Demonstratives and personal forms
With ez “this” and az “that,” both the demonstrative and noun receive illative marking: ebbe a dobozba, abba az épületbe. The demonstrative's final z fully assimilates to b, giving doubled bb.
Ebbe a kosárba tedd a tiszta törölközőket!
Put the clean towels into this basket!
Abba az utcába nem lehet autóval behajtani.
You cannot drive into that street by car.
Personal pronouns use a special belé- series rather than forms such as énbe.
| Person | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1st singular | belém | into me |
| 2nd singular | beléd | into you |
| 3rd singular | belé | into him/her/it |
| 1st plural | belénk | into us |
| 2nd plural | belétek | into you |
| 3rd plural | beléjük | into them |
These personal forms are frequent in abstract constructions: belém szeretett “fell in love with me,” beléjük kötött “picked a fight with them.” Interrogative and indefinite forms are transparent: mibe? “into what?”, amibe “into which/what,” valamibe “into something,” semmibe “into nothing.”
Mibe csomagoljam az üveget?
What should I wrap the bottle in?
A direction case, not a translation of “in”
Illative profiles an endpoint inside a boundary. The verb may express literal entry (bemegy a szobába), placement (beteszi a fiókba), or a change into a state (bajba kerül). It is not selected merely because English uses “in.” Static interior location takes inessive, and emergence takes elative.
A cég nehéz helyzetbe került.
The company got into a difficult situation.
A fáradt gyerek mély álomba merült.
The tired child fell into a deep sleep.
Institutions have lexical patterns. Iskolába, boltba, bankba, kórházba use illative, but egyetemre, piacra use sublative and orvoshoz uses allative. Architecture alone does not predict all conventional destinations. Learn each frequent place with its full direction family.
Informal pronunciation, standard spelling
In rapid (informal) speech, the final n of locative -ban/-ben is often weakened or lost. Consequently, standard a boltban vagyok “I am in the shop” may sound like a boltba vagyok. This does not create a new illative form. Standard writing—and careful speech—keeps boltban for location and boltba for destination.
Most a boltban vagyok, utána bemegyek a bankba.
I'm in the shop now; afterward I'll go into the bank.
Segmentation exercise
Analyze each form from right to left.
- szobáinkba = szoba + i + nk + ba: room + possessed plural + our + into; final a lengthens.
- dobozaitokba = doboz + ai + tok + ba: box + possessed plural + your(plural) + into.
- kertjeikbe = kert + jei + k + be: garden + possessed plural + their + into.
- ebbe = ez + be, with complete z → b assimilation.
- belénk = illative pronominal base + first-person plural ending.
Analytical plus signs are not written in ordinary words. They simply reveal why the case suffix remains the outermost layer.
Common Mistakes
❌ A tányérokat a szekrényba tettem.
Incorrect — the front-vowel noun szekrény requires -be.
✅ A tányérokat a szekrénybe tettem.
I put the plates into the cupboard.
❌ Menj be a szobaba!
Incorrect — final a lengthens before the illative suffix.
✅ Menj be a szobába!
Go into the room!
❌ Ez a fiókba tedd a levelet!
Incorrect — the demonstrative must agree with the case-marked noun.
✅ Ebbe a fiókba tedd a levelet!
Put the letter into this drawer!
❌ A könyvtárba olvasok már egy órája.
Incorrect for an activity already taking place inside the library.
✅ A könyvtárban olvasok már egy órája.
I've been reading in the library for an hour.
Key Takeaways
- -ba follows back-vowel stems; -be follows front-vowel stems, including rounded-front stems.
- Final a/e lengthens: szoba → szobába, pince → pincébe.
- Illative follows plural and possession, and demonstratives agree: ebbe a házba.
- Personal complements use belém, beléd, belé, belénk, belétek, beléjük.
- Illative is the inward-goal member of an interior direction triple, not a general equivalent of English “in” or “to.”
- Colloquial loss of inessive n never changes standard spelling.
