The Illative -ba/-be: Contrasts and Learner Traps

Illative -ba/-be is the inward member of one direction triple, not a general ending for English “to” or “in.” Its nearest competitors differ in direction, spatial relationship, conventional place type, or the complement required by a particular word. This page supplies tests for those boundaries; review illative formation and illative meanings for the complete base pattern.

Inside, into, or out of?

The interior triple contrasts static containment, an inward endpoint, and an outward source:

QuestionCaseExample
hol? “where?”-ban/-bengarázsban — in the garage
hova? “where to?”-ba/-begarázsba — into the garage
honnan? “where from?”-ból/-bőlgarázsból — out of the garage

Az autó a garázsban áll.

The car is standing in the garage.

Az autó lassan begurul a garázsba.

The car slowly rolls into the garage.

Az autó kitolat a garázsból.

The car reverses out of the garage.

Do not classify the verb as “motion” and stop. A csarnokban sétál describes walking within the hall; a csarnokba sétál makes the hall the endpoint entered. Conversely, kerül is not an obvious motion verb, but a fiókba kerül “ends up in the drawer” still presents an inward result.

A látogatók a csarnokban sétálnak.

The visitors are walking around in the hall.

A látogatók a csarnokba sétálnak.

The visitors walk into the hall.

💡
Apply the boundary test to the noun, not the verb: remaining within X takes inessive; reaching X's interior takes illative; leaving that interior takes elative.

Into an interior or onto a surface?

Illative contrasts with sublative -ra/-re, which presents the goal as a surface, event, or conventionally surface-like place. With physical objects, the difference can be literal.

Tedd a süteményt a dobozba!

Put the pastry into the box!

Tedd a süteményt a dobozra!

Put the pastry onto the box!

With places, lexical convention matters. Hungarian says iskolába but egyetemre, üzletbe but piacra, moziba but koncertre. These are not errors in spatial logic: the language has conventionalized different frames.

A húgom iskolába indul, én pedig az egyetemre.

My younger sister is leaving for school, while I'm leaving for university.

Esőben inkább moziba megyünk, nem a szabadtéri koncertre.

In the rain we'd rather go to the cinema than to the outdoor concert.

Settlement names show the same lexical split: Kecskemétre is surface-goal, while Debrecenbe is interior-goal. A guessed rule such as “all Hungarian cities take -ra/-re” fails. Learn the location member first—Kecskeméten, Debrecenben—and build the corresponding direction triple.

Into a place or toward a person/service?

Allative -hoz/-hez/-höz marks movement to the vicinity of a point and is standard with people and service providers. An institution may be an interior destination, while a professional is a proximity destination.

Beviszem a leletet a rendelőbe.

I'll take the test result into the clinic.

Elviszem a leletet az orvoshoz.

I'll take the test result to the doctor.

Similarly, Réka lakásába megyek means “I am going into Réka's apartment,” while Rékához megyek normally means “I am going to Réka's place/to see Réka.” English “to Réka's” leaves that distinction implicit.

A futár Réka lakásába viszi a csomagot, mi pedig Rékához megyünk vacsorázni.

The courier is taking the package into Réka's apartment, while we're going to Réka's for dinner.

Entry versus an endpoint reached

Terminative -ig marks the limit up to which movement or extent proceeds; it does not assert entry. Compare az erdőbe futott “ran into the forest” with az erdőig futott “ran as far as the forest.”

A túrázók besétáltak az erdőbe.

The hikers walked into the forest.

A túrázók csak az erdőig sétáltak.

The hikers walked only as far as the forest.

This contrast is useful because English “to the forest” can describe either outcome. Hungarian explicitly distinguishes arrival inside from reaching a boundary.

State entry and lexical alternatives

Abstract illative depends on a conventional state or verb–complement pairing. Bajba kerül “get into trouble,” álomba merül “fall asleep,” and kétségbe esik “despair” present a state as an interior. But not every English change “into” uses illative. Translative -vá/-vé marks transformation into a new identity: a víz jéggé fagy “the water freezes into ice.”

A rossz tanács miatt bajba jutott.

He/She got into trouble because of the bad advice.

Éjszaka a nedves út jégpályává változott.

During the night, the wet road turned into an ice rink.

Illative state entry means entering a condition while remaining the same entity. Translative highlights becoming a different role, substance, or result. Some expressions are lexical and do not fit a single philosophical rule, so store frequent combinations intact.

Governed complements also contrast. Beleegyezik a javaslatba takes illative, whereas hozzájárul a javaslathoz takes allative; both can mean “agree/consent to the proposal.” The verb, not English “to,” selects the case.

A bizottság beleegyezett a módosításba.

The committee agreed to the amendment.

A bizottság hozzájárult a módosításhoz.

The committee consented to the amendment.

Information structure changes order, not case

The illative phrase may follow the verb neutrally or appear immediately before it as focus. With a prefixed verb, focus usually separates the prefix.

Betettem az iratokat a páncélszekrénybe.

I put the documents into the safe.

A PÁNCÉLSZEKRÉNYBE tettem be az iratokat, nem a fiókba.

I put the documents into THE SAFE, not the drawer.

Capital letters represent corrective stress only. The case remains illative because information structure does not change the documents' destination.

Pronunciation and register

In rapid (informal) speech, location -ban/-ben often loses its final n and can sound like -ba/-be. A speaker may pronounce standard A konyhában van nearly like A konyhába van. This widespread reduction is not the standard written form, and it does not make illative grammatical with a static location.

The illative itself is register-neutral. Administrative phrases such as hatályba lép (formal) and conversational beugrik a boltba (informal) differ in vocabulary, not suffix grammar.

A módosítás holnap lép hatályba.

The amendment enters into force tomorrow. (formal)

Hazafelé beugrom a pékségbe.

I'll pop into the bakery on my way home. (informal)

💡
In writing, ignore colloquial n-dropping and choose by direction. If the sentence answers hol?, restore -ban/-ben; if it answers hova? and the goal is an interior, use -ba/-be.

Decision tree

  1. Does the phrase identify a place where something already is or happens? Choose a location case, not illative.
  2. Is an endpoint inside a physical or conceptual boundary asserted? Choose -ba/-be.
  3. Is the goal a surface, event, or conventionally surface-like place? Consider -ra/-re.
  4. Is the goal a person, household, or service provider? Consider -hoz/-hez/-höz.
  5. Does movement stop at a boundary without entry? Choose -ig.
  6. Is the meaning transformation into a new identity or substance? Consider -vá/-vé.
  7. Does a verb conventionally govern a case? Follow that lexical pattern.

Diagnostic exercise

Choose the form that matches the stated meaning.

  1. “We are walking around in the park”: parkban / parkba
  2. “Put the papers into the envelope”: borítékba / borítékra
  3. “I'm going to the dentist”: fogorvosba / fogorvoshoz
  4. “They walked as far as the bridge”: hídba / hídig
  5. “The water turned into ice”: jégbe / jéggé
  6. “I agreed to the proposal” with beleegyezik: javaslatba / javaslathoz

Answers: (1) parkban, because the activity stays within the park. (2) borítékba, an envelope is a container. (3) fogorvoshoz, a professional is a proximity goal. (4) hídig, the bridge is the terminal limit, not an interior entered. (5) jéggé, transformation requires translative. (6) javaslatba, because beleegyezik governs illative.

Common Mistakes

❌ A barátaim már a kávézóba ülnek.

Incorrect for sitting inside the café; the phrase describes location, not entry.

✅ A barátaim már a kávézóban ülnek.

My friends are already sitting in the café.

❌ Délután az orvosba megyek.

Incorrect — a doctor as service provider takes the allative.

✅ Délután az orvoshoz megyek.

I'm going to the doctor this afternoon.

❌ A vonat Budapestre érkezik, aztán Debrecenre megy tovább.

Incorrect — Debrecen conventionally belongs to the interior triple.

✅ A vonat Budapestre érkezik, aztán Debrecenbe megy tovább.

The train arrives in Budapest, then continues to Debrecen.

❌ A vita végén beleegyeztek a kompromisszumhoz.

Incorrect — beleegyezik selects illative, despite English ‘agree to’.

✅ A vita végén beleegyeztek a kompromisszumba.

At the end of the debate, they agreed to the compromise.

Key Takeaways

  • Illative marks an endpoint inside a boundary; it contrasts with inessive location and elative source.
  • Sublative, allative, and terminative encode different goal relationships that English “to” may conceal.
  • Place names and institutions have conventional directional families that must be learned lexically.
  • State entry differs from transformation, and governed complements follow the selecting verb.
  • Focus and prefix placement do not change case.
  • Informal n-dropping can blur pronunciation, but standard spelling preserves the contrast.
