The Translative-Factive -vá/-vé: Forms and Core Pattern

The translative-factive case -vá/-vé marks the result of a change: baráttá válik “becomes a friend,” jéggé fagy “freezes into ice,” érthetővé tesz “makes understandable.” The suffix says what role, identity, substance, or property the subject or object ends up as. Its underlying v fully assimilates after a consonant, so the visible form often looks like a doubled final consonant plus -á/-é; the broader sound pattern is covered under suffix assimilation.

Two harmonic forms

The unassimilated forms are back-vowel -vá and front-vowel -vé. Rounded front vowels also select -vé; there is no rounded third form. After a vowel-final stem, v remains visible.

HarmonyBaseResult formMeaning
backanyaanyáváinto/as a mother
backjóvágood; into a good state
front unroundedmesemesévéinto a story
front roundedvezetővezetővéinto/as a leader
front roundedegyszerűegyszerűvésimple

Final short a/e lengthens before the suffix, while the suffix remains visible: anya + vá → anyává, mese + vé → mesévé. Other final vowels remain: tanulóvá, szülővé, keserűvé.

A közös munka igazi csapattá formálta a csoportot.

Working together shaped the group into a real team.

A sok gyakorlás érthetővé tette a nehéz szabályt.

A lot of practice made the difficult rule understandable.

A történet végére a mellékszereplő vezetővé válik.

By the end of the story, the supporting character becomes the leader.

💡
If the stem ends in a vowel, listen for and write the suffix's v: jóvá, vezetővé. If it ends in a consonant, expect that v to become the final consonant instead.

Full consonant assimilation

After a pronounced final consonant, the suffix's v fully assimilates to that consonant. Hungarian spelling shows the resulting long consonant. Harmony still determines final á or é.

Final soundAnalysisWritten form
zház + váházzá
tbarát + vábaráttá
rember + véemberré
kgyerek + végyerekké
sorvos + váorvossá
vkönyv + vékönyvvé

This is the same kind of full assimilation found with instrumental -val/-vel, but the two cases have different meanings. The doubled consonant is pronounced long, not merely written twice.

Written final h is exceptional when it is silent: the v remains in pléhvé and juhvá. If final h is pronounced, it assimilates normally, as in sahhá.

A régi raktárt közösségi házzá alakították.

They converted the old warehouse into a community center.

A tapasztalat óvatosabb emberré tette.

The experience made him/her a more cautious person.

A csapat kapitánnyá választotta Dórát.

The team elected Dóra captain.

Multigraphs use shortened doubling

Hungarian digraphs such as cs, gy, ny, sz, ty, zs and the trigraph dzs each represent one consonant. When doubled, only the first letter is repeated: cs → ccs, gy → ggy, ny → nny, sz → ssz, ty → tty, zs → zzs, dzs → ddzs. Thus nagy + vá → naggyá, lány + vá → lánnyá, and egész + vé → egésszé; do not write nagygyá, lánynyá, or egészszé.

A váratlan győzelem naggyá tette a kis csapatot.

The unexpected victory made the small team great.

A hosszú várakozás szinte végtelenné nyújtotta a délutánt.

The long wait made the afternoon seem almost endless.

The word új gives the frequent form újjá, visible in újjáépít “rebuild” and újjászületik “be reborn.” The jj represents long j.

Suffix position after number and possession

Translative-factive is an outer case ending. It follows plural or possessive material when the complete form denotes the resulting identity.

StructureFormSegmentation
singular consonant-finalbaráttábarát + vá → baráttá
pluralbarátokkábarát-ok + vá → barátokká
possessedotthonunkkáotthon-unk + vá → otthonunkká
vowel-finalvezetővévezető + vé
possessed pluralcéljainkkácél-jai-nk + vá → céljainkká

A befogadó család lassan második otthonunkká vált.

The host family's home gradually became our second home.

Az ötleteket közös céljainkká formáltuk.

We turned the ideas into shared goals.

The case attaches to the result complement, not to the participant undergoing change. In Dórát kapitánnyá választották, Dórát is the accusative object and kapitánnyá is the resulting role.

Demonstratives and interrogatives

Demonstratives show the same assimilation: ez + vé → ezzé, az + vá → azzá. When a demonstrative modifies a result noun, both elements bear the case: ezzé a problémává, azzá a vezetővé. Such phrases are grammatical but less frequent than stand-alone ezzé/azzá.

Hogyan vált egy apró hiba ekkora problémává?

How did a small error turn into such a big problem?

Mivé szeretnéd alakítani ezt a helyiséget?

What would you like to turn this room into?

The interrogative is mivé? “into what?”, with related amivé, valamivé, semmivé. The fixed phrase semmivé válik means “come to nothing” or “be reduced to nothing.” Ordinary personal pronouns have no translative personal paradigm; when personal identity is genuinely the result, reflexive forms such as önmagammá “into myself” are possible.

Result, not destination or capacity

English uses “into” for both transformation and physical direction. Hungarian separates them: jéggé fagy is transformation into ice, whereas a jégbe fúr means “drills into the ice.” English “as” can describe a role without any change; Hungarian then often uses essive-formal -ként, as in tanárként dolgozik “works as a teacher.” Translative tanárrá válik asserts becoming a teacher.

A víz éjszaka jéggé fagyott.

The water froze into ice overnight.

Éva tanárként dolgozott, később igazgatóvá vált.

Éva worked as a teacher and later became a principal.

The result verb also matters. Neutral everyday lesz commonly takes an unmarked predicate: orvos lett “became a doctor.” More explicit change verbs such as válik, alakít, formál, tesz, választ, nyilvánít frequently take -vá/-vé. These lexical patterns are not freely interchangeable.

💡
Do not translate English “into” or “as” directly. Ask whether Hungarian presents a transformation result, a physical destination, or a role in which someone acts.

Segmentation exercise

  1. barátokká = barát + ok + vá, with v → k full assimilation.
  2. mesévé = mese + vé, with final e → é lengthening.
  3. naggyá = nagy + vá, with long gy written ggy.
  4. otthonunkká = otthon + unk + vá, with v → k after the possessive form.
  5. ezzé = ez + vé, with v → z.

Common Mistakes

❌ A víz jégbe fagyott.

Incorrect for a change of substance — illative describes entering an interior, not becoming ice.

✅ A víz jéggé fagyott.

The water froze into ice.

❌ Dórát kapitánvá választották.

Incorrect — the suffix's v fully assimilates to final n.

✅ Dórát kapitánnyá választották.

Dóra was elected captain.

❌ A javítás egyszerűvébb tette a használatot.

Incorrect — the comparative stem is egyszerűbb, and the result suffix follows it.

✅ A javítás egyszerűbbé tette a használatot.

The fix made using it easier.

❌ Éva orvossá dolgozik a rendelőben.

Incorrect — an ongoing professional capacity takes -ként, not a change-result case.

✅ Éva orvosként dolgozik a rendelőben.

Éva works as a doctor at the clinic.

Key Takeaways

  • Translative-factive names the role, identity, substance, or property reached through change.
  • Back stems take -vá, front stems -vé; after pronounced final consonants, v fully assimilates, while silent final h retains it.
  • Multigraphs double as ggy, nny, ssz, not by repeating the whole letter sequence.
  • The suffix follows plural and possession and marks the result complement.
  • Physical destinations, continuing roles, and neutral predicates use different constructions; English “into/as” does not select the case.
