Suffix-Boundary Consonant Assimilation: Forms and Core Pattern

At a Hungarian suffix boundary, vowels and consonants solve different problems. Vowel harmony chooses a form such as -val or -vel; consonant assimilation then determines what happens when that suffix meets the stem. Thus ház + -val → házzal “with a house,” while kéz + -vel → kézzel “with a hand.”

This page presents the formal architecture: complete assimilation with -val/-vel and -vá/-vé, several patterns involving j, regressive voicing, palatalization, and their spelling. Extended meanings belong on the usage page, and difficult choices on the contrasts page. Unless marked otherwise, the forms are neutral modern standard Hungarian.

Build the form in four stages

Use this order rather than changing letters all at once:

  1. Choose the lexical stem: for example ház, kéz, kő, híd.
  2. Choose the suffix member: back -val/-vá, front -vel/-vé. These suffixes have two forms, not a special rounded ö-form.
  3. Apply the consonant rule: after a pronounced final consonant, the initial v is replaced by that consonant.
  4. Use the spelling convention: write the resulting long consonant, respecting Hungarian multigraphs.
Stem + abstract suffixHarmonyAssimilationWritten result
ház + -VAlház + -valz + v → zzházzal
kéz + -VAlkéz + -velz + v → zzkézzel
bot + -VAlbot + -valt + v → ttbottal
fül + -VAlfül + -vell + v → llfüllel
por + -VApor + -vár + v → rrporrá
víz + -VAvíz + -véz + v → zzvízzé

A szerelő kalapáccsal és egy hosszú csavarhúzóval érkezett.

The mechanic arrived with a hammer and a long screwdriver.

A jég délutánra vízzé olvadt.

The ice melted into water by the afternoon.

💡
Harmony applies before consonant assimilation. Híd is lexically back-harmonic, so híd + -val → híddal; front víz + -vel → vízzel. The nearest written vowel is not always enough to choose the suffix.

Complete assimilation with -val/-vel

The instrumental-comitative suffix expresses accompaniment, instrument, and several related functions. After a vowel, its v remains: autóval, kővel, teával. Final short a/e lengthens before the suffix: macska → macskával, mese → mesével.

After a consonant, v takes on the identity of that consonant and the result is long: barát + -val → baráttal, öröm + -vel → örömmel, szív + -vel → szívvel. Final v also doubles in writing.

Kávéval kezdtem a napot, aztán a barátommal elindultam dolgozni.

I started the day with coffee, then left for work with my friend.

Ezt a hírt vegyes érzelmekkel fogadtuk.

We received this news with mixed feelings.

The suffix has only back and front members. Rounded ö/ő/ü/ű selects front -vel, not an invented -völ: földdel, tükörrel, füllel.

Complete assimilation with -vá/-vé

The translative-factive suffix marks a resulting role or state: porrá “into dust,” vízzé “into water,” elnökké “into/as president.” Its consonant pattern is the same as -val/-vel, but its vowel is long.

After vowel-final stems the v remains: kővé, érthetővé, fává. Final a/e again lengthens: fa + -vá → fává, mese + -vé → mesévé.

A gyakorlás lassan magabiztos előadóvá tette.

Practice gradually made her a confident presenter.

A részletes ábra mindenki számára érthetővé tette a folyamatot.

The detailed diagram made the process understandable to everyone.

Doubling a Hungarian multigraph

Hungarian cs, dz, dzs, gy, ly, ny, sz, ty, zs are single consonant letters written with several characters. In an ordinary suffixed word, their shortened doubling repeats only the first character: nagy + -val → naggyal, asszony + -val → asszonnyal, kulcs + -val → kulccsal.

Final consonantStemWith -val/-velWith -vá/-vé
gynagynaggyalnaggyá
nyaranyarannyalarannyá
cskulcskulccsalkulccsá
szrészrésszelrésszé
zsrozsrozzsalrozzsá

Ezzel a kulccsal nyithatja ki a hátsó ajtót.

You can open the back door with this key.

Already-long consonants do not acquire a third written copy in common words: toll + -val → tollal, jobb + -vá → jobbá, könny + -vé → könnyé. The suffix is present even though ordinary spelling caps the sequence at its conventional long form.

A principal h-final exception

Assimilation follows the final pronounced consonant, but current standard spelling also recognizes pronunciation-based variation in some h-final words. A silent final h yields forms such as csehvel and pléhvé, with v intact. With words whose final h varies in pronunciation, including düh, juh, méh, rüh, both patterns may be standard: for example, méhvel ~ méhhel and juhval ~ juhhal. Where h is consistently pronounced, assimilation is written: dohhal, potrohhal. Learn these small lexical classes rather than predicting them from harmony.

A gazda egy juhval érkezett a vásárra.

The farmer arrived at the fair with a sheep.

j-initial suffixes do not form one spelling class

Several endings contain or historically involve j, but standard spelling treats their boundaries differently.

In forms such as adja “gives it,” látja “sees it,” bánja “regrets it,” and hagyja “leaves it,” pronunciation commonly fuses the final consonant with j into a long palatal consonant. Spelling nevertheless preserves stem plus ending: ad + ja, lát + ja, bán + ja, hagy + ja. Do not write aggya, láttya, bánnya, or haggya in neutral prose.

A portás átadja a csomagot, ha látja a személyi igazolványát.

The concierge will hand over the package if he sees your identity card.

With sibilant-final verbs, some j-initial endings undergo complete assimilation that standard spelling does show: mos + ja → mossa, olvas + ja → olvassa; imperative mos + j → moss, néz + j → nézz, edz + j → eddz. The full imperative system includes additional t-final subpatterns such as lát → láss and tanít → tanítson; learn those with the imperative forms, not as a single letter-replacement trick.

Mossa meg a gyümölcsöt, aztán nézze meg, nem maradt-e rajta föld!

Wash the fruit, then check whether any soil remains on it! (formal)

💡
A heard long gy, ty, or ny does not automatically require ggy, tty, or nny. First recover the morphemes: adja, látja, bánja preserve d/t/n + j in writing.

Regressive voicing: usually heard, normally not written

When two obstruents meet, the second often determines the voicing of the first. In dobtam “I threw,” written b is pronounced voiceless before t. In képben “in the picture,” p is normally voiced before b. Standard spelling preserves the stem: dob + -tam, kép + -ben.

A képet tegnap dobtam be a postaládába.

I put the picture into the mailbox yesterday.

Sonorants such as m, n, ny, l, r, j do not participate as ordinary voiced–voiceless pairs. V is also asymmetric: after a voiceless obstruent it may devoice, but it normally does not voice that preceding consonant, as in hatvan “sixty.” None of these surface effects is respelled.

Palatalization in speech versus written morphology

The fusion in adja, látja, bánja is a kind of complete palatal assimilation. Other contacts with palatal consonants may show partial or speaker-dependent palatalization, especially in rapid speech. Those noncategorical pronunciation details do not license new spelling. At A2, the reliable distinction is this: learn which productive suffixes conventionally show complete assimilation in writing, and otherwise preserve known stems and endings.

Segmentation exercise

Segment each form, name the vowel choice, and state whether assimilation is written.

  1. házzal
  2. kővé
  3. híddal
  4. kulccsal
  5. adja
  6. mossa
  7. dobtam
  8. juhval

Answers: (1) ház + -val; back vowel, written complete v-assimilation. (2) kő + -vé; front vowel, no consonant assimilation after the vowel. (3) híd + -val; híd is lexically back-harmonic, then v → d. (4) kulcs + -val; back harmony and doubled multigraph ccs. (5) ad + -ja; palatal fusion in speech, but the boundary remains written dj. (6) mos + -ja; complete j-assimilation is written ss. (7) dob + -tam; regressive devoicing is heard but not written. (8) juh + -val; the valid silent-h pronunciation leaves v intact. The variant juhhal follows the pronounced-h pattern and is also standard.

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving -val/-vel unchanged after a pronounced consonant.

❌ A barátomval mentem moziba.

Incorrect — the suffix consonant assimilates to final m.

✅ A barátommal mentem moziba.

I went to the cinema with my friend.

2. Choosing the front suffix from í in a lexically back stem.

❌ A híddel továbbra is sok probléma van.

Incorrect — híd selects back -val before assimilation.

✅ A híddal továbbra is sok probléma van.

There are still many problems with the bridge.

3. Doubling an entire multigraph mechanically.

❌ Ezzel a kulcscsal nem nyílik az ajtó.

Incorrect — long cs is spelled ccs inside the suffixed word.

✅ Ezzel a kulccsal nem nyílik az ajtó.

This key does not open the door.

4. Spelling a palatalized verb form by sound.

❌ A recepciós átaggya a belépőkártyát.

Incorrect — standard spelling preserves átad + -ja.

✅ A recepciós átadja a belépőkártyát.

The receptionist hands over the access card.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose the harmonic suffix member before applying consonant assimilation.
  • -Val/-vel and -vá/-vé keep v after vowels but copy a pronounced final consonant after consonant-final stems.
  • Respect multigraph doubling: naggyal, kulccsal, asszonnyal.
  • Some j-boundaries remain visible (adja), while sibilant assimilation may be written (mossa, nézz).
  • Regressive voicing and many pronunciation adjustments do not change standard spelling.
