The Instrumental-Comitative -val/-vel: Forms and Core Pattern

Hungarian -val/-vel combines two major functions: instrumental “with/by means of” and comitative “together with.” It also appears in manner phrases, reciprocal verb frames, and active comparisons. After a vowel, the forms remain visibly -val/-vel. After a pronounced final consonant, the initial v normally assimilates to that consonant, producing a pronounced and written long consonant. Harmony after vowel-final stems

Back-harmonic stems take -val and front-harmonic stems take -vel. When the stem ends in a vowel, v remains unchanged. Final short a/e lengthen to á/é.

Kávéval takes the back form because the earlier á determines harmony; final neutral é does not override it. By contrast, esernyővel contains only front vowels and selects -vel.

Complete assimilation after pronounced consonants

After a pronounced final consonant, the suffix's v changes completely into that consonant. Hungarian spelling records the resulting length by doubling the consonant.

The forms are pronounced with a genuinely long consonant: baráttal contains long tt, székkel long kk, and kézzel long zz. Writing barátval or pronouncing a short consonant does not produce the standard form.

Harmony still selects the vowel of the suffix before assimilation: back barát + val → baráttal, front kés + vel → késsel. Assimilation changes v, not the harmonic vowel.

A small but important spelling exception concerns stems whose final h is not pronounced. Because there is no pronounced consonant for v to assimilate to, standard forms retain it: méhvel “with a bee,” pléhvel “with sheet metal,” and juhval “with a sheep.” When final h is pronounced, assimilation applies normally: dohhal, potrohhal.

Doubling Hungarian multigraphs

Hungarian sz, gy, ny, cs, zs, ty, dz, dzs represent single consonants. When one becomes long before -val/-vel, spelling doubles it according to Hungarian multigraph rules—normally by doubling the first letter of the multigraph, not by writing the whole group twice.

Both demonstrative ezzel and noun jeggyel carry the same case. The target consonants are long in speech. Preserving multigraph integrity is essential: buszszal and jegygyel are not standard spellings.

Instrument, accompaniment, and manner

The same case ending serves several related roles. An instrument enables an action; a companion participates alongside someone; a manner phrase characterizes how an action unfolds.

The forms show different structures: kalapács + val → kalapáccsal; barát-a-i-m + val → barátaimmal, where v assimilates to possessive m; and türelem + vel → türelemmel. In every case, the outer suffix is historically -val/-vel.

Reciprocal and comparison frames

Several verbs select a comitative complement: találkozik valakivel “meet someone,” beszél valakivel “speak with someone,” vitatkozik valakivel “argue with someone,” egyetért valakivel “agree with someone.” English sometimes has with and sometimes none, so store the Hungarian frame.

Instrumental also marks the second item in an active comparison.

This differs from a comparative adjective, whose standard normally takes -nál/-nél: Az új ajánlat jobb a réginél “The new offer is better than the old one.” The choice belongs to the Hungarian construction, not the English word with/than.

Personal pronouns

Personal pronouns use a special series rather than forms such as énvel or tevel:

Reinforced énvelem, teveled, ővele add emphasis or a marked stylistic rhythm and can occur across registers; the short forms are neutral.

Case networks, not a translation of “with”

English with also marks possession or circumstances that Hungarian may express differently. “The woman with the red coat” is naturally a piros kabátos nő, using adjectival -s, not automatically a nő a piros kabáttal. “I'm pleased with the result” is Elégedett vagyok az eredménnyel, where elégedett does select instrumental. Lexical construction decides.

Instrumental is not itself a direction case, but it intersects with the same case system in which spatial relations form triples. Learning Hungarian cases as semantic networks prevents both errors: using -val/-vel for every English with/by, and using one spatial ending for every English to/from.
