Consonant assimilation is not an optional fast-speech decoration. It is part of ordinary forms such as baráttal “with a friend,” vízzé “into water,” and olvassa “reads it.” What varies is whether standard spelling displays the change or preserves the morpheme boundary.
This page organizes the patterns by communicative job. The forms page explains how to build them, and the contrasts page handles ambiguous and exceptional cases. Unlabeled examples are neutral modern standard Hungarian.
Accompaniment: who is together with whom?
The most concrete use of -val/-vel marks a companion. After a consonant, the initial v fully assimilates and the result is written: barát + -val → baráttal, testvér + -vel → testvérrel. After a vowel, v remains: Évával, apával.
A húgommal és két barátommal találkozom a pályaudvaron.
I'm meeting my younger sister and two friends at the railway station.
Évával jössz a koncertre, vagy egyedül?
Are you coming to the concert with Éva or alone?
English uses a separate preposition and leaves friend unchanged. Hungarian encodes the relation on the noun, so omitting consonant length can produce a form that is visibly malformed. Say and write the long consonant in baráttal.
Instrument and means: what do you use?
The same suffix marks an instrument, a means of transport, or a delivery agent. Context, not a different suffix, gives késsel “with a knife,” vonattal “by train,” and futárral “by courier.”
Vonattal megyünk Győrbe, onnan pedig taxival folytatjuk az utat.
We're going to Győr by train, then continuing by taxi from there.
A csomagot egy éles késsel bontotta ki.
She opened the package with a sharp knife.
Küldje el a szerződést futárral, kérem.
Please send the contract by courier. (formal)
Hungarian often prefers an instrumental form where English chooses by, with, or using. Do not translate the English preposition first and then guess the form. Identify the Hungarian relation and attach one suffix correctly.
Manner and abstract association
-Val/-vel also packages an attitude, manner, degree, or associated circumstance: örömmel “with pleasure/gladly,” figyelemmel “with attention,” nagy sebességgel “at high speed,” feltétellel “on condition.” These are not less “literal” versions of the suffix; they extend the same association relation into abstract discourse.
Örömmel segítek, de ezt a részt nagyobb figyelemmel kell átnéznünk.
I'm happy to help, but we need to review this section more carefully.
A kérelmet azzal a feltétellel fogadták el, hogy minden adatot ellenőriznek.
The application was accepted on condition that they check all the data. (formal)
The demonstrative az has two standard instrumental forms. In the more frequent azzal, suffixal v copies final z; in less frequent avval, demonstrative z copies suffixal v. Thus, in azzal a feltétellel, both suffixed words show the same direction: suffixal v copies the preceding z or l. The alternative direction remains visible in avval.
Transformation and resulting status
-Vá/-vé presents something as reaching a new role, material, or state. After consonants its v assimilates: porrá, vízzé, elnökké. After vowels it remains: kővé, érthetővé.
A szél néhány óra alatt porrá szárította a sarat.
The wind dried the mud to dust within a few hours.
A tapasztalat óvatosabbá tette, de nem vált bizalmatlanná.
The experience made her more cautious, but she did not become distrustful.
A közgyűlés nagy többséggel elnökké választotta.
The general assembly elected him president by a large majority. (formal)
The suffix commonly appears with válik “become,” tesz “make,” választ “elect,” and verbs of transformation. English may use into, as, an object complement, or nothing at all; Hungarian still marks the result on the noun or adjective.
j-initial endings in descriptions and requests
In the definite present, an ending containing j often signals that the verb acts on a definite object: átadja a kulcsot, látja a kijáratot, bánja a döntést. The consonants fuse in pronunciation, but these examples preserve the stem boundary in writing.
A recepciós ellenőrzi az adatokat, majd átadja a kulcsot.
The receptionist checks the details and then hands over the key.
Látja innen a kijáratot, vagy mutassam meg?
Can you see the exit from here, or shall I show you?
Sibilant-final verbs may show the assimilated result in writing: olvassa can mean “he/she reads it” or, with request intonation and a formal addressee, “read it.” Context and sentence type—not spelling alone—distinguish the indicative from the imperative.
A nagymamám minden reggel elolvassa az újságot.
My grandmother reads the newspaper every morning.
Olvassa el még egyszer az utolsó bekezdést!
Read the final paragraph once more! (formal)
English usually uses word order, pronouns, and intonation rather than an object-sensitive conjugation. A learner must therefore identify the Hungarian construction before deciding whether a heard long consonant is ss, dj, tj, or another boundary.
Voicing and palatalization in connected speech
Regressive voicing assimilation adjusts obstruents within clusters. In dobtam, final b is normally devoiced before t; in képben, p is normally voiced before b. These adjustments are standard pronunciation, but spelling keeps dob and kép visible.
Palatal fusion likewise affects adja, látja, bánja. It is not careless (informal) speech: it occurs in educated standard pronunciation too. A (formal) speaker may articulate phrase boundaries more carefully, but does not normally pronounce every written consonant as an isolated English-style segment.
A képet tegnap dobtam be, de a rendszer még nem látja.
I submitted the picture yesterday, but the system still cannot see it.
Harmony is a separate lexical layer
Before assimilation, choose the suffix vowel. Back-vowel stems take -val/-vá and front-vowel stems -vel/-vé, but neutral-vowel stems may belong lexically to either class. Thus híddal is back-harmonic, while vízzel is front-harmonic. A rounded front stem still takes -vel, not a rounded third member: földdel, tükörrel.
A híddal nem volt gond, de a vízzel igen.
There was no problem with the bridge, but there was with the water.
Suffix chains can change the nearest vowel without changing which earlier morphemes they contain. In barátommal, the possessive -om is already inside the suffixed word before instrumental assimilation. Analyze barát-om-mal: -mal is the assimilated case ending, not an independent preposition.
A short dialogue
This natural (informal) exchange combines accompaniment, instrument, and a polite-looking but friendly request:
– Kivel jössz segíteni a költözésnél?
– Who are you coming with to help with the move?
– A bátyámmal. Teherautóval hozzuk a szekrényt.
– With my older brother. We're bringing the wardrobe by truck.
– Ezzel a kulccsal nyissam ki a kaput?
– Shall I open the gate with this key?
– Igen, aztán tedd le a kulcsot az asztalra!
– Yes, then put the key down on the table!
Bátyámmal contains final-vowel lengthening and possessive morphology before -mal. Kulccsal respects the multigraph cs. The short imperative tedd belongs to an irregular high-frequency verb and should not be reanalyzed as -val/-vel assimilation.
Formal versus informal realization
Standard spelling is stable across registers. Institutional prose tends to use abstract -vá/-vé constructions, while conversation often chooses a more direct verb.
Az új eljárás átláthatóbbá és ellenőrizhetőbbé teszi a döntéshozatalt.
The new procedure makes decision-making more transparent and easier to audit. (formal)
Az új módszerrel sokkal könnyebb ellenőrizni, mi történt.
With the new method, it's much easier to check what happened. (informal)
Rapid speech may compress clusters more strongly (informal), while prepared delivery may preserve clearer boundaries (formal). Neither register licenses barátomval or phonetic spellings such as aggya in neutral writing. Deliberate eye dialect belongs only to marked characterization (literary) or joking messages (informal).
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English “with” as an unchanged suffix.
❌ A testvéremvel érkeztem.
Incorrect — suffixal v assimilates to final m.
✅ A testvéremmel érkeztem.
I arrived with my sibling.
2. Confusing accompaniment with result.
❌ A jeget lassan vízzel olvasztotta.
Incorrect for the intended result ‘into water’ — vízzel means ‘with water.’
✅ A jeget lassan vízzé olvasztotta.
She slowly melted the ice into water.
3. Inventing a rounded instrumental suffix.
❌ A földdöl együtt emelte fel a növényt.
Incorrect — -val/-vel has no rounded *-völ member.
✅ A földdel együtt emelte fel a növényt.
He lifted the plant together with the soil.
4. Writing a palatalized surface pronunciation.
❌ A portás haggya nyitva az ajtót.
Incorrect — the stem hagy- remains visible before -ja.
✅ A portás hagyja nyitva az ajtót.
The porter leaves the door open.
Key Takeaways
- Use -val/-vel for companions, instruments, means, and associated circumstances; use -vá/-vé for results and new roles.
- Complete v-assimilation is grammatical and written after a pronounced consonant.
- j-driven fusion may be written (olvassa) or morphologically transparent (adja), depending on the construction.
- Standard pronunciation includes voicing and palatal effects that standard spelling may leave unmarked.
- Harmony, rounding, stem class, and assimilation are coordinated layers, not one “match the nearest vowel” rule.
