The Essive-Formal -ként: Forms and Core Pattern

Essive-formal -ként presents someone or something in a role, capacity, classification, or stage: tanárként “as a teacher,” példaként “as an example,” gyerekként “as a child.” Despite its traditional name, “formal” here describes grammatical form, not necessarily formal register. -ként is common in ordinary modern conversation as well as official prose. This page builds its morphology; essive-formal usage and essive-formal contrasts cover the semantic choices.

One invariant ending

The suffix is always -ként. It has no back/front or rounded variant, so vowel harmony does not change it.

BaseEssive-formalSegmentationMeaning
tanártanárkénttanár-kéntas a teacher
szakértőszakértőkéntszakértő-kéntas an expert
eszközeszközkénteszköz-kéntas a tool
példapéldakéntpélda-kéntas an example
mesemesekéntmese-kéntas a story

Unlike many Hungarian case suffixes, -ként does not lengthen stem-final short a/e: anya → anyaként, példa → példaként, mese → meseként. Forms such as anyaként and meséként would contain a different stem shape and are not the ordinary singular role forms.

Tanárként sokat tanultam a diákjaimtól.

As a teacher, I learned a lot from my students.

A rendőrség tanúként hallgatta meg.

The police interviewed him/her as a witness.

Ezt csak példaként említettem.

I mentioned this only as an example.

💡
Memorize -ként as an invariant block. Do not harmonize it, and do not lengthen final a/e before it: kollégaként, meseként.

Role and capacity

The noun before -ként identifies the capacity in which a participant acts, is considered, or is used. It does not assert that the role is the participant's only or permanent identity.

Nóra tolmácsként dolgozik egy nemzetközi cégnél.

Nóra works as an interpreter at an international company.

A régi telefont ébresztőóraként használom.

I use the old phone as an alarm clock.

In the second sentence, the phone has the function of an alarm clock without becoming one in every respect. -ként marks capacity; accusative a régi telefont independently marks the object of használom.

Professional and institutional writing often stacks a more specific role noun before -ként:

Az ülésen a munkavállalók képviselőjeként szólalt fel.

At the meeting, he/she spoke as the employees' representative.

This is natural in official reporting (formal), but the same suffix occurs in the conversational Anyaként ezt nehéz hallanom “As a mother, this is hard for me to hear” (informal).

Classification and treatment “as”

Verbs such as kezel “treat/regard,” értékel “evaluate,” használ “use,” and említ “mention” can assign a temporary or functional classification with -ként.

A késést súlyos problémaként kezelték.

They treated the delay as a serious problem.

A kutatók az eredményt előzetes adatként közölték.

The researchers reported the result as preliminary data.

The classified phrase may itself contain modifiers, but only its head receives -ként: súlyos problémaként, not súlyosként problémaként. Hungarian adjectives before a noun normally remain uninflected for case.

“As an example” versus resemblance

Essive-formal can introduce an item in a representative or illustrative capacity.

Budapestet említette példaként.

He/She mentioned Budapest as an example.

This differs from resemblance with mint “like/as.”

A felhő olyan volt, mint egy hatalmas hajó.

The cloud was like an enormous ship.

The cloud is compared to a ship; it is not functioning in the role of one. English as/like does not reliably distinguish Hungarian -ként from mint.

Temporal staging

With human stages and viewpoints, -ként means “in the role/state of being X at that time.” Frequent forms include gyerekként, fiatalként, kezdőként, diákként.

Gyerekként minden nyarat a nagyszüleimnél töltöttem.

As a child, I spent every summer at my grandparents' place.

Kezdőként gyakran féltem kérdezni.

As a beginner, I was often afraid to ask questions.

The suffix does not itself mark past time. The verb töltöttem/féltem supplies tense; -ként supplies the perspective or life stage.

State versus change of state

Essive-formal describes the role in force during an event. Translative -vá/-vé marks becoming or turning into a new state.

Dóra orvosként dolgozik a kórházban.

Dóra works at the hospital as a doctor.

Dóra tavaly orvossá vált.

Dóra became a doctor last year.

The first does not encode the transition into medicine; the second does. Translative undergoes consonant assimilation: orvos + vá → orvossá. Essive-formal simply attaches: orvos-ként.

A raktárt ideiglenesen irodává alakították.

The warehouse was temporarily converted into an office.

A raktár egy hétig irodaként működött.

The warehouse functioned as an office for a week.

This matched pair separates transition irodává from temporary function irodaként.

💡
Use -vá/-vé for the boundary-crossing event “become/turn into”; use -ként for the role or capacity that holds during another event.

Plural and possessed forms

Plural and possessive morphology comes before -ként. The invariant ending remains outermost.

MeaningFormSegmentation
as teacherstanárokkénttanár-ok-ként
as expertsszakértőkkéntszakértő-k-ként
as my friendbarátomkéntbarát-o-m-ként
as our representativeképviselőnkkéntképviselő-nk-ként

Plural -k followed by -ként produces a visible kk sequence across the boundary: tanárok-ként → tanárokként. Both consonants are pronounced long. In képviselőnkként, possessive -nk is followed by -ként, again yielding kk at the boundary.

Barátomként őszinte választ várok tőled.

As my friend, I expect an honest answer from you.

Segmentation practice

  1. anyakéntanya-ként: no final-vowel lengthening.
  2. eszközkénteszköz-ként: invariant ending after a rounded-front stem.
  3. tanárokkénttanár-ok-ként: plural before case.
  4. barátomkéntbarát-o-m-ként: possessive before case.
  5. irodakéntiroda-ként: role/state; contrast irodává, change into an office.

Common Mistakes

❌ Anyáként sokat aggódom.

Incorrect for singular ‘as a mother’ — -ként does not lengthen final a.

✅ Anyaként sokat aggódom.

As a mother, I worry a lot.

❌ Péter orvosként vált.

Incorrect for becoming a doctor — -ként marks an existing role, not change of state.

✅ Péter orvossá vált.

Péter became a doctor.

❌ Ezt a dobozt asztallá használjuk.

Incorrect — -vá/-vé marks a resulting transformation, not the function assigned by használ.

✅ Ezt a dobozt asztalként használjuk.

We use this box as a table.

❌ Ő tanárul dolgozik.

Incorrect — -ul/-ül does not freely mark professional capacity; use -ként.

✅ Ő tanárként dolgozik.

He/She works as a teacher.

Key Takeaways

  • -ként is invariant: it has no harmonic allomorphs.
  • Final a/e do not lengthen: anyaként, meseként.
  • It marks roles, capacities, classifications, illustrative status, and life-stage perspectives.
  • Plural and possessive morphology precedes -ként.
  • -ként describes a state/role; -vá/-vé marks becoming or transformation.
