B2 Learner Path

This page is a route through the B2 material, not a substitute for the linked lessons. It assumes that you have completed a B1 course or can already perform the prerequisite tasks below. Each block is sized for one week of five focused sessions; if a retrieval checkpoint exposes a repeated error, repeat the relevant contrast before moving on.

At B2, Hungarian grammar does not become a collection of brand-new endings. Familiar resources begin to work together under heavier communicative pressure. The same harmony choice appears inside a longer noun phrase, the same definite ending must survive an embedded clause, and the same prefix changes position when focus or negation changes. The goal is coordinated control.

Prerequisites assumed

Before starting, you should be able to:

  • write á, é, í, ó, ö, ő, ú, ü, ű reliably and hear common vowel- and consonant-length contrasts;
  • select the core spatial and governed cases without translating an English preposition word for word;
  • use present and past forms, the conditional, basic imperatives, and common personal infinitives;
  • choose definite or indefinite conjugation with familiar direct objects;
  • keep a verbal prefix attached in a neutral affirmative clause and place it after the verb under ordinary negation, imperative force, or preverbal focus;
  • build complement, adverbial, and relative clauses with the appropriate correlatives and case-marked pronouns;
  • distinguish a discourse topic from immediately preverbal focus in controlled examples;
  • understand the main facts and argument in a two- to three-minute standard-Hungarian news or interview recording.

If several of these are not yet stable, use the B1 learner path first. B2 work will revisit them, but it will not rebuild every paradigm from the beginning.

Entry diagnostic

Complete the diagnostic without notes on two different days.

  1. Listen to ninety seconds of a standard-Hungarian news item. Give an oral summary, then transcribe thirty seconds with full accents and punctuation.
  2. Write 180–220 words about a local change you support or oppose. Include one definite and one indefinite object, two prefixed verbs in different orders, a relative clause, a conditional, and a nem… hanem… correction.
  3. Read the paragraph aloud. Mark the constituent receiving the strongest stress in four sentences and explain why it is there.
  4. Correct your work by error type: harmony, case, definiteness, prefix, clause structure, information structure, or spelling.

Ha a könyvtár tovább lenne nyitva, munka után is el tudnám vinni a lefoglalt könyveket.

If the library stayed open later, I could pick up the reserved books after work as well. (entry-diagnostic sentence)

Begin Week 1 if your message is intelligible but two or more categories repeatedly fail. You may begin Week 2 if you can explain every suffix and word-order choice in your own diagnostic and the recording preserves vowel length. Do not exempt accent errors as “only spelling”: an accent can distinguish a different Hungarian word or sound.

Week 1: reconnect the five core choices

Review these decision pages in order:

  1. Choosing a case
  2. Choosing a verb form
  3. Object definiteness
  4. Prefix order
  5. Topic and focus

Use one event to retrieve all five systems. Start with a neutral affirmative sentence, negate it, correct one constituent, replace an indefinite object with a definite one, and add a destination or source. Say each version before writing it; then annotate the relevant suffixes and prefix position.

Tegnap végigolvastam egy hosszú beszámolót, de a mellékelt táblázatot még nem néztem át.

Yesterday I read through a long report, but I have not yet looked over the attached table.

Milestone 1

Produce six five-sentence contrast chains. Accept a chain only if a change in meaning produces the expected change in case, conjugation, prefix position, or focus. This is deliberately harder than reciting six paradigms: it measures whether the systems remain connected.

💡
Keep a decision log, not a list of endings. Write “definite known object → átnézem” or “negation → nem néztem át.” The reason for a form is more retrievable than an isolated cell in a chart.

Week 2: make scope and information structure audible

Study constituent negation, quantifier scope, and recasting English clefts and stress. Work from a spoken question or contrast, never from shuffled words without context.

Control three readings: a broad denial, a constituent correction, and a limited quantifier claim. Record pairs with deliberately different nuclear stress. A listener should be able to tell whether you are correcting the person, time, object, or whole proposition.

Nem minden résztvevő küldte vissza időben a kérdőívet; négyen csak másnap válaszoltak.

Not every participant returned the questionnaire on time; four did not respond until the next day.

Nem a kérdőívet küldték ki későn, hanem az emlékeztetőt.

It was not the questionnaire that they sent out late, but the reminder.

Milestone 2

Take eight neutral statements and answer a follow-up question that shifts focus. Rewrite only what the new discourse requires. Then listen back without the script and label the intended correction. If prefix placement is right on paper but stress makes the answer ambiguous, the task is not complete.

Week 3: connect aspect, telicity, and prefix placement

Study lexical aspect and telicity before its usage page. Revisit familiar prefixes as parts of event structure, not one-to-one translations of English particles. Compare an ongoing activity, a bounded achievement, an interrupted attempt, and a repeated event.

Use short narratives in which the result matters. Ask whether the event reached its endpoint and whether a focused constituent or negation displaces the prefix. Keep object definiteness in the task, because a completed event with an identified object often requires both a prefix choice and the definite conjugation.

Mire megérkezett a szerkesztő, Ági már átírta a bevezetést, de az utolsó bekezdést nem fejezte be.

By the time the editor arrived, Ági had already rewritten the introduction, but she had not finished the final paragraph.

Retrieval checkpoint 1: one narrative, five systems

After forty-eight hours without review, listen to a two-minute report and retell it in 150–180 words. Include a completed and an incomplete event, an identified object, a source or destination, a negated prefix, and one focused correction. Transcribe your retelling from the recording.

Score each system separately. A polished past-tense narrative with random accusatives is not a pass; neither is a correct written text whose stress hides every correction. Repair only the weakest two categories, then retell a new report.

Week 4: reduce clauses with participles

Begin with the already familiar present participle, then study past and prospective participle forms and their usage. Only after reviewing the full relative clause should you compress it.

Build controlled pairs: relative clause → participial modifier → relative clause again. Preserve the semantic role of the head noun and every governed case inside the modifier. Hungarian participles do not agree with the head noun, so do not import English or Romance agreement expectations.

A tegnap közzétett felhívásra jelentkező önkénteseket pénteken tájékoztatják a részletekről.

The volunteers who apply in response to the notice published yesterday will be informed of the details on Friday.

Milestone 4

Compress six relative clauses and expand six participles drawn from a short news report. Reject any answer that silently changes who acts, what has been completed, or what is only intended for the future.

Week 5: add causatives and passive alternatives

Study the forms of causatives, passives, and impersonal strategies, followed by the usage guide. You already control case roles and object definiteness; now use them to track the causer, causee, and affected object.

Contrast megíratta a jelentést “had the report written,” megíratták vele a jelentést “they made/had them write the report,” and an agentless third-person plural. Do not force English passive syntax into every translation. Hungarian often foregrounds the result, uses an impersonal plural, or chooses a participial state.

A pályázókkal újra kitöltették az űrlapot, mert két kötelező rovat üresen maradt.

The applicants were made to fill in the form again because two required fields had been left blank.

Milestone 5

Rewrite five short institutional notices in two ways: one version names the responsible agent, and the other backgrounds it naturally. Explain what each version highlights. Accuracy includes the causee’s case and the finite verb’s definite or indefinite ending.

Week 6: build longer dependencies without losing the thread

Work through subordination contrasts, relative-clause contrasts, correlative contrasts, and the full conditional system. Practice clause boundaries aloud before writing dense sentences.

Controlled work should alternate expansion and reduction. Join three simple clauses with an explicit relation, then divide the result again. Make sure azt, arról, or another anticipatory pronoun carries the case required by the matrix verb.

Arra számítottunk, hogy ha csökken a részvételi díj, többen jelentkeznek majd a hétvégi képzésre.

We expected that if the participation fee decreased, more people would register for the weekend course.

Retrieval checkpoint 2: edit for two audiences

Write a 250-word account of a proposed community project. Prepare an (informal) version for a friend and a (formal-neutral) version for a public meeting. Both must retain the same facts, but the second should use explicit discourse relations, controlled clause compression, and appropriately measured claims.

After a two-day delay, highlight every suffix and finite verb in one paragraph. Check harmony, case government, object definiteness, and prefix placement before judging style.

Week 7: calibrate stance, evidence, and register

Study stance and turn management, contrast and inference markers, formal interaction, and journalistic style.

Rank claims from directly evidenced to tentative. Practice agreeing with one proposition while rejecting another, attributing evidence, and interrupting courteously. Register is not ornamental vocabulary: pronoun choice, conditional softening, sentence density, and explicit source marking all change together.

A rendelkezésre álló adatok alapján valószínűnek tűnik, hogy az intézkedés csökkentette a várakozási időt.

On the basis of the available data, it seems likely that the measure reduced waiting times. (formal evidential claim)

💡
At B2, reread a text for grammar in passes: cases first, finite-verb definiteness second, prefix placement third, and information structure last. Trying to notice everything at once hides systematic transfer errors.

Week 8: read news and opinion as grammar in context

Read a short news report, then an opinion column and a popular-science paragraph. For each text, first listen without reading, then reconstruct its argument from notes. On the second pass, mark evidence, concession, participial modifiers, nominalizations, and focused corrections.

Milestone 8

Record a two-minute news summary with no personal evaluation. Then record a two-minute response that makes your stance explicit. A classmate should be able to identify which recording reports and which argues even without seeing the script.

Week 9: participate in structured disagreement

Use the structured debate exchange as a model. Shadow each role, including its hesitation, contrastive stress, and turn-closing intonation. Then replace the issue and evidence while retaining the interactional moves: partial agreement, evidential qualification, corrective focus, and a polite request for the floor.

Abban egyetértek veled, hogy változtatni kell, de a javasolt határidőt a jelenlegi létszámmal nem tartom reálisnak.

I agree with you that a change is needed, but with the present staffing level I do not consider the proposed deadline realistic.

Week 10: integrate, retrieve, and publish

Choose a local issue for which you can obtain two short Hungarian sources. Create a claim map, distinguish reported evidence from your own assessment, and draft a 450–550-word opinion text. Then convert the main argument into a six-minute moderated discussion with another speaker or two self-recorded roles.

Final B2 productive milestone

Submit the written argument and recording together. The text must contain:

  • a clear topic and at least three purposeful focus choices;
  • two correctly attributed evidence claims and one concession;
  • one participial reduction and one full relative clause;
  • one causative or natural Hungarian alternative to an English passive;
  • controlled case government, object definiteness, and prefix placement throughout;
  • fully accented Hungarian from first draft to final copy.

Pass when a reader can follow the argument without reconstructing missing case relations, and a listener can hear the intended corrections. Repeated loss of ő/ű, three unexplained case choices, or a recurring definite-conjugation error sends the work back to the appropriate checkpoint rather than forward to C1.

Common Mistakes

❌ Nem mindenki megértette a javaslatot, mert túl gyorsan mutatták be.

Incorrect for the intended scope — preverbal megértette conflicts with the neutral ‘not everyone understood’ reading.

✅ Nem mindenki értette meg a javaslatot, mert túl gyorsan mutatták be.

Not everyone understood the proposal because it was presented too quickly.

❌ A tegnap publikált cikket elolvastam, de nem egyetértek vele következtetés.

Incorrect — negation separates egyet, and the possessed noun needs its governed instrumental form.

✅ Elolvastam a tegnap közzétett cikket, de nem értek egyet a következtetésével.

I read the article published yesterday, but I do not agree with its conclusion.

❌ A vezető javította a munkatársakkal a hibás adatokat.

Wrong for ‘had the employees correct’ — a simple verb does not express causation.

✅ A vezető kijavíttatta a munkatársakkal a hibás adatokat.

The manager had the employees correct the faulty data.

❌ Szerintemmel a cikk bizonyítja, hogy az intézkedés mindig működik.

Incorrect — szerintem takes no added case ending, and one report rarely warrants an absolute mindig claim.

✅ Szerintem a cikk azt mutatja, hogy az intézkedés bizonyos körülmények között működhet.

In my view, the article shows that the measure may work under certain circumstances.

Key Takeaways

  • B2 assumes B1 control of core morphology and clause structure; it develops coordinated use under discourse pressure.
  • Revisit harmony, case, definiteness, prefix placement, and information structure inside every new task.
  • Learn scope and focus through contextualized spoken contrasts, not shuffled-word puzzles.
  • Establish aspect and participial roles before adding causatives, passive alternatives, and denser clauses.
  • Move from controlled contrast chains to news summaries, opinion writing, and structured debate.
  • Require full accents, audible length, and explainable suffix choices at every checkpoint.
