Contrast, Cause, Result, and Inference Markers: Contrasts and Learner Traps

Hungarian offers several words where English often settles for but, so, or therefore. They are not interchangeable decorations. Each one tells the listener how to relate the new clause to the previous discourse: as a counterpart, a reservation, a simultaneous consideration, a consequence, an inference, or a conclusion based on a source. Three kinds of contrast

Use viszont when two people, things, times, or alternatives are being set against each other. It is especially natural after the topic of the second clause. Use azonban for a counterexpectation or qualification, especially in planned and formal prose. Use ugyanakkor when both considerations remain valid, or literally when events occur at the same time.

The first sentence pairs én with Réka. The second overturns the positive expectation created by világos. The third asks the reader to hold an advantage and a disadvantage in view together. English but can cover all three relations, so English speakers must decide what the contrast is doing rather than translate mechanically.

Viszont can also begin a turn in conversation: Viszont akkor ki zárja be az irodát? “But then who locks the office?” That use is (informal) and often adds a new objection. In neutral written comparison, post-topic placement is clearer.

Result versus reason: ezért and emiatt

Both ezért and emiatt point back to an accessible fact, but they package it differently. Ezért presents the next event as the result: “for this reason; therefore.” Emiatt treats the previous fact as the cause or circumstance: “because of this.” The truth conditions may be close, yet the information structure differs.

The first directs attention forward to the action taken. The second makes the cancellation the cause of a resulting problem. Emiatt is not grammatically negative: A gyors válasz miatt időt nyertünk is possible. Nevertheless, emiatt occurs very often with inconveniences and problems, so it can acquire a negative coloring from context.

Contrast these with a noun phrase headed by miatt:

Here the cause is named directly. Emiatt normally retrieves a cause already mentioned or visible in the situation.

Consequence versus inference: ezért and tehát

Ezért describes a cause-to-result connection. Tehát presents the speaker's conclusion, summary, or inference. A real-world event may license both, but the speaker chooses which reasoning step to foreground.

In the first example, staying home is a consequence of the fever. In the second, the visible evidence supports the speaker's conclusion. Tehát is also common in presentations and explanations (formal/academic), but it is not restricted to formal logic. In conversation it can resume a thread or ask for confirmation.

That tehát manages the turn and summarizes an agreement; it does not claim a scientific deduction.

Inference versus source: tehát and eszerint

Eszerint means “according to this” or “judging by this.” It requires a recoverable source, statement, sign, or piece of evidence. Tehát foregrounds the inferential step itself. Compare:

The eszerint version keeps the report as the evidential anchor. The tehát version presents the conclusion more directly as the speaker's reasoning. In formal writing, eszerint can also refer to a rule or interpretation: Eszerint az eljárás szabályos volt “According to this, the procedure was lawful.” Without an accessible antecedent, it leaves the reader asking “according to what?”

Position and information structure

English learners often place every connector at the beginning of its clause. Hungarian allows clause-initial position, but the marker's location can reveal the discourse organization. A post-topic viszont makes the paired topics unmistakable; clause-initial azonban can frame an entire sentence as a reservation; a focused ezért can answer miért? “why?”

The last example makes éppen ezért the contrastive reason. Moving such markers is not merely stylistic: it changes what the sentence presents as the established topic and what it highlights.

Register contrasts

In everyday conversation, viszont, ezért, emiatt, and turn-managing tehát are all ordinary. Azonban is neutral in careful speech but especially common in formal prose. Ugyanakkor is frequent in analytical and institutional writing because it balances claims without canceling either. Eszerint is neutral when a concrete source is present, though abstract source-based inference is common in formal and academic argument.

Do not replace every conversational de with azonban to sound advanced. That produces stiff speech. These discourse markers add a specific relation; sophistication comes from choosing that relation accurately.

A practical decision tree

1. Are you contrasting two explicit counterparts? Choose viszont.
2. Are you adding a counterexpectation or formal reservation? Choose azonban.
3. Must both considerations remain simultaneously valid? Choose ugyanakkor.
4. Are you presenting an event as a consequence? Choose ezért.
5. Are you pointing back to a previously mentioned cause? Choose emiatt.
6. Are you drawing or summarizing a conclusion? Choose tehát.
7. Are you concluding specifically from an accessible source or sign? Choose eszerint.

Answers: 1 viszont (paired systems); 2 ezért (result); 3 eszerint (source-based conclusion); 4 azonban (qualification); 5 ugyanakkor (two co-valid considerations). In some wider contexts another marker could be defensible, but these clues select the unmarked reading.

Common Mistakes

English so encourages learners to ignore the difference between causal result and balanced contrast.

Do not stack synonymous result markers.

Do not use eszerint without a recoverable source.

Finally, do not use emiatt to name a new cause directly.
