és, meg, vagy, de, viszont, and azonban: Contrasts and Learner Traps

No Hungarian connector is a permanent one-word equivalent of English and, or, or but. The choice depends on whether speakers neutrally add equal material, shift conversational topics, present alternatives, overturn an expectation, or balance two topics. Punctuation then reflects the size and relation of the coordinated units.

For formation and placement, consult Coordination: Forms; for central contexts, see Coordination: Usage.

Neutral és versus conversational meg

Anna és Gergő elkészítették a vacsorát.

Anna and Gergő prepared dinner.

Anna meg Gergő készítette a vacsorát.

Anna and Gergő made dinner. (informal)

Both join names, but és is neutral across registers while connective meg evokes conversation. The second also permits a collective singular construal; plural készítették is possible. In an official report, és is the reliable choice.

Topic-following meg has another discourse function:

Én elmosogatok, te meg töröld le az asztalt.

I'll do the dishes, and you wipe the table.

Replacing it with plain és remains grammatical, but weakens the balanced “as for you” topic shift. Conversely, prefix meg- cannot be replaced by és: megírom “I will write it” contains verbal morphology, not coordination.

💡
Use és when the link itself is neutral. Choose separate-word meg when casual rhythm, accumulation, or an “as for X” shift is part of the message.

Additive és versus alternative vagy

Kávét és teát is kínálunk.

We offer both coffee and tea.

Kávét vagy teát kérsz?

Would you like coffee or tea?

És includes both alternatives; vagy leaves a choice. Yet plain vagy is not inherently exclusive:

A jelentkezést elküldheti e-mailben vagy postán.

You can submit the application by email or by post. (formal)

This permits either method; the institution may not care if someone uses both. Repeated vagy ... vagy creates a stronger either–or frame:

Vagy ma döntünk, vagy elhalasztjuk a projektet.

Either we decide today or we postpone the project.

English or is equally ambiguous, so logic comes from context rather than a simple translation chart.

General de versus topic-balancing viszont

A szálloda kényelmes, de messze van a központtól.

The hotel is comfortable, but it is far from the center.

A szálloda kényelmes, a környék viszont zajos.

The hotel is comfortable, whereas the neighborhood is noisy.

De overturns an expectation within an evaluation of one hotel. Viszont explicitly balances two topics, a szálloda and a környék. In many contexts either could translate English “but,” but switching them changes discourse organization.

Viszont can also add a compensating advantage:

Nincs erkély, viszont gyönyörű a kilátás.

There is no balcony, but the view is beautiful.

The positive second fact counterbalances the lack. De would be grammatical and more neutral; viszont emphasizes the trade-off.

De versus formal azonban

Szeretnék maradni, de már késő van.

I'd like to stay, but it's already late.

Az elemzés ígéretes, az adatok azonban még hiányosak.

The analysis is promising; however, the data are still incomplete. (academic)

Everyday de introduces a direct counterexpectation. Azonban is common in formal exposition and often follows the new clause topic. Beginning every conversational objection with azonban sounds stiff, while using de repeatedly in a research paper can sound stylistically monotonous rather than ungrammatical.

Do not copy English comma placement after sentence-initial “however”:

Azonban ezt a lehetőséget sem zárhatjuk ki.

However, we cannot exclude this possibility either. (formal)

Hungarian does not insert a comma after initial azonban merely because English does.

Viszont versus azonban in second position

Péter korán érkezett, Júlia viszont késett.

Péter arrived early, whereas Júlia was late.

A kísérlet sikerült. Az eredmények azonban további ellenőrzést igényelnek.

The experiment succeeded. The results, however, require further verification. (academic)

Both may follow a topic. Viszont highlights a balanced contrast between comparable entities or properties. Azonban marks a discourse-level reservation and is more at home in planned exposition. They overlap, but English however cannot choose between them without context.

Comma or no comma?

No comma normally separates coordinated words or phrases:

A csomag könnyű és meglepően erős.

The package is light and surprisingly strong.

A comma separates coordinated clauses, even when the second subject is omitted but a new finite predicate forms a clause:

A futár megérkezett, és rögtön felhívott.

The courier arrived and called immediately.

In practice, the boundary between multiple predicates in one simple clause and coordinated clauses can be difficult. Hungarian orthographic guidance acknowledges genuine analysis choices. With adversative de, a comma is robust even between phrase-level contrasts: kicsi, de erős “small but strong.” Do not transfer the optional English Oxford comma into ordinary Hungarian lists.

Coordination versus correlate-based subordination

Elfáradtunk, ezért hazamentünk.

We got tired, so we went home.

Azért mentünk haza, mert elfáradtunk.

We went home because we got tired.

The first links two propositions through resultative ezért. The second makes the causal clause subordinate and optionally pairs mert with demonstrative correlate azért. Hungarian uses similar correlates in other subordinate relations—akkor, amikor; úgy, ahogy. Coordinators such as és and de do not select such correlates.

💡
If the main clause contains a demonstrative pointing toward a following clause, analyze a subordinate correlate pair before choosing an English-looking coordinator.

Register-sensitive alternatives

Jön a Dani meg a húga is.

Dani and his younger sister are coming too. (informal)

Dániel és a húga egyaránt részt vesznek a rendezvényen.

Dániel and his younger sister will both attend the event. (formal)

The formal sentence uses standard name form and és. This is a stylistic contrast, not evidence that meg is grammatically defective. In dialogue, meg can sound more natural than ceremonious azonban or repeated és.

Decision tree

  1. Are you neutrally adding equal units? Use és.
  2. Is the addition conversational, accumulative, or shifting to a new topic? Consider meg.
  3. Are you offering alternatives? Use vagy; repeat it for a strong either–or structure.
  4. Does the second proposition simply oppose an expectation? Use unmarked de.
  5. Are comparable topics being balanced? Use viszont, often after the second topic.
  6. Is this a formal reservation in planned prose? Use azonban, often after the topic.
  7. Are full clauses joined? Mark the boundary with a comma; omit it between ordinary coordinated nouns.

Diagnostic exercise

Choose the most informative connector.

  1. A casual division of chores: Én főzök, te _ mosogatsz.meg.
  2. A menu asks for one drink: Vizet _ limonádét kérsz?vagy.
  3. A paper introduces a reservation after a finding: Az eredmény jelentős. A minta _ kicsi.azonban.
  4. Two apartments are balanced: Az első olcsó, a második _ közelebb van.viszont.
  5. A plain counterexpectation: Hideg van, _ nem fúj a szél.de.

The choices reflect discourse, not only dictionary meaning. In 3 and 4, de remains grammatical, but it loses the formal reservation or balanced-topic nuance.

Common Mistakes

❌ Anna, meg Bence már itt van.

Incorrect punctuation—no comma separates simple coordinated subjects.

✅ Anna meg Bence már itt van.

Anna and Bence are already here. (informal)

❌ A szoba kicsi azonban kényelmes.

Incorrect punctuation—adversative azonban requires a marked boundary here.

✅ A szoba kicsi, azonban kényelmes.

The room is small but comfortable. (formal)

❌ Azonban, az adatok hiányosak.

Incorrect English-shaped comma after initial azonban.

✅ Azonban az adatok hiányosak.

However, the data are incomplete. (formal)

❌ Vagy felhívhatsz és írhatsz e-mailt.

Incorrect for a strict either–or instruction; the mixed connectors include an unintended combination.

✅ Vagy felhívhatsz, vagy írhatsz e-mailt.

Either you can call or you can write an email.

Key Takeaways

  • És is neutral; connective meg adds conversational rhythm and topic contrast.
  • Plain vagy is contextually inclusive or exclusive; repeated vagy forces a stronger alternative.
  • De is broad, viszont balances topics, and azonban frames a formal counterpoint.
  • Hungarian comma placement follows syntactic structure, not English visual habits.
  • Demonstrative correlates diagnose subordination, not ordinary coordination.
