Hungarian markers such as viszont, azonban, ugyanakkor, ezért, emiatt, tehát, and eszerint do more than join propositions. They show which fact is being contrasted, what earlier material a pronoun-like form points back to, and whether the speaker is reporting a consequence or drawing a conclusion. Their placement also helps organize turns and focus. The earlier forms overview introduces their syntax.
Contrasting counterparts with viszont
Viszont commonly sets one topic against another: one person acts one way, the other, by contrast, acts differently. It is especially natural after the contrasted topic rather than mechanically at the beginning of every sentence.
Én gyalog mentem haza, Dóra viszont megvárta az utolsó buszt.
I walked home, whereas Dóra waited for the last bus.
A leves finom volt, az adag viszont túl kicsinek bizonyult.
The soup was delicious, but the portion turned out to be too small.
In both examples, the item before viszont is the new counterpart. English however can occur sentence-initially, but copying that placement as a default loses this clean topic contrast. In spontaneous speech, turn-initial Viszont... does occur (informal), often when the speaker adds an objection; edited prose usually integrates it with the contrasted constituent.
Correcting expectations with azonban
Azonban introduces an obstacle, qualification, or contrary fact. It is neutral to (formal) and more typical of planned speech and writing than casual de. It may begin a clause or follow its topic.
A javítás egyszerűnek tűnt. Azonban egy fontos alkatrész hiányzott.
The repair seemed simple. However, an important part was missing.
A második megoldás azonban jóval több energiát igényel.
The second solution, however, requires considerably more energy.
Clause placement changes discourse rhythm, not the basic logical relation. Initial azonban signals a new counter-move; posttopic a második megoldás azonban keeps the alternative itself prominent.
Balancing two valid considerations with ugyanakkor
Literal ugyanakkor can mean “at the same time.” As a discourse marker it balances two facts that remain simultaneously valid, often without directly canceling the first.
Az új rendszer gyorsabb, ugyanakkor több képzést igényel.
The new system is faster, while at the same time it requires more training.
A környék csendes; ugyanakkor a központ húsz perc alatt elérhető.
The neighborhood is quiet; at the same time, the center can be reached in twenty minutes.
The second sentence adds a complementary advantage rather than an objection. Translating every English however as ugyanakkor can therefore invent a “both are valid” stance the speaker did not intend.
Naming a consequence with ezért
Ezért is historically and transparently an anaphoric “for this”: ez + -ért. It points back to a stated reason and presents the following event as its consequence. It often occupies the preverbal focus position when the reason itself is contrasted.
Éjjel megfagyott az út, ezért a buszok lassabban közlekednek.
The road froze overnight, so the buses are running more slowly.
A régi munkakörömben már nem tudtam tovább fejlődni. Éppen ezért váltottam munkahelyet.
I could no longer develop professionally in my old position. That is precisely why I changed jobs.
Here strongly focused éppen ezért points back to the preceding explanation and occupies the preverbal focus position. When the explicit reason comes later, standard Hungarian normally uses the paired pattern azért ... mert: Azért váltottam munkahelyet, mert fejlődni szerettem volna “I changed jobs because I wanted to develop professionally.” Do not mechanically extend anaphoric ezért into that cataphoric frame.
Highlighting the cause with emiatt
Emiatt means “because of this” and profiles the preceding situation as a cause or problem source. It can modify one clause internally rather than simply coordinate two clauses. Negative consequences are frequent but not grammatically required.
Elromlott a fűtés, és emiatt két napra bezárt az óvoda.
The heating broke down, and because of this the kindergarten closed for two days.
Megváltozott a menetrend; emiatt most könnyebben elérem a reggeli csatlakozást.
The timetable changed; because of this I can now catch my morning connection more easily.
The positive second example shows that emiatt itself does not mean “because of this bad thing.” Ezért would foreground the resulting decision or event; emiatt more explicitly packages the prior situation as a cause.
Drawing a conclusion with tehát
Tehát often marks an inference or summary: the following statement follows from the evidence, reasoning, or previous exchange. In speech it can also hold the floor, resume a line of thought, or announce a conclusion.
Minden ajtó zárva van, tehát valószínűleg már senki sincs az épületben.
All the doors are locked, so probably nobody is left in the building.
Tehát abban maradtunk, hogy hétfőn újra egyeztetünk.
So, we agreed that we would consult again on Monday.
The first is logical inference, qualified by valószínűleg. The second organizes the conversation and records its outcome. Tehát need not claim formal deduction.
Interpreting evidence with eszerint
Eszerint means “according to this” or “on this interpretation.” Its ez points to a document, statement, sign, or newly established fact. The speaker infers what follows from that source.
A visszaigazolásban kedd szerepel. Eszerint hétfőn még nem kell bemennünk.
Tuesday is shown in the confirmation. According to that, we do not have to go in on Monday yet.
A mérés eredménye alacsonyabb a vártnál; eszerint módosítanunk kell a modellt.
The measurement is lower than expected; on this evidence, we need to modify the model. (academic)
Unlike neutral source phrase a jelentés szerint, eszerint normally takes its antecedent from the immediately accessible discourse or situation. Without a recoverable “this,” it sounds unanchored.
A short dialogue
– A szálloda közel van, viszont nincs saját parkolója. – Akkor busszal menjünk? – Vasárnap ritkán jár, ezért inkább taxit foglalnék. – Eszerint induljunk fél órával korábban.
– The hotel is nearby, but it has no parking of its own. – Shall we go by bus then? – It runs infrequently on Sundays, so I'd rather book a taxi. – In that case, let's leave half an hour earlier.
The speakers use viszont to add a counter-property, ezért to motivate a preference, and eszerint to derive a joint plan from the available information.
Formal and informal choices
Everyday speech often uses de, szóval, or a short juxtaposition. Planned prose favors explicit distinctions among contrast, cause, and inference.
Drága volt, de végül megvettük, mert sürgősen kellett.
It was expensive, but we bought it in the end because we needed it urgently. (informal)
A berendezés költséges volt; ugyanakkor azonnal rendelkezésre állt, ezért a beszerzése mellett döntöttünk.
The equipment was costly; at the same time it was immediately available, so we decided to purchase it. (formal)
The formal version explicitly balances evidence before presenting the consequence. More markers are useful only because each performs a distinct job.
Common Mistakes
❌ Eszerint holnap esni fog.
Unanchored in the intended opening statement: eszerint requires accessible evidence or a prior source.
✅ A friss előrejelzés esőt mutat; eszerint holnap szükség lesz esernyőre.
The latest forecast shows rain; according to that, an umbrella will be needed tomorrow.
❌ Júlia viszont eljött, én otthon maradtam.
Poor placement for the intended ‘I versus Júlia’ pairing: the counterpart structure is obscured.
✅ Én otthon maradtam, Júlia viszont eljött.
I stayed home, whereas Júlia came.
❌ Késett a vonat, ugyanakkor lekéstük a csatlakozást.
Misleading balance for a straightforward cause-result relation.
✅ Késett a vonat, ezért lekéstük a csatlakozást.
The train was late, so we missed the connection.
Key Takeaways

- Ezért presents a consequence, while emiatt profiles an accessible situation as its cause.
- Tehát draws or manages a conclusion; eszerint interprets accessible evidence.
- Anaphoric markers need a recoverable antecedent; when the explicit reason follows, use the established azért ... mert frame.
- Clause position organizes topic, focus, evidence, stance, and conversational turns—not just logical relation.
