Contrast, Cause, Result, and Inference Markers: Forms and Core Pattern | Hungarian Grammar

Hungarian distinguishes simple contrast, counterbalanced perspectives, real-world consequence, explicit cause, logical inference, and source-dependent conclusion. Viszont, azonban, and ugyanakkor relate opposing or balancing propositions; ezért and emiatt point back to a cause; tehát presents an inference or conclusion; eszerint makes that conclusion depend on the information just supplied. These markers are uninflected, but ezért, emiatt, and eszerint preserve productive case or postpositional patterns. Review cause-and-result conjunctions if you need the clause-building contrast between markers such as mert and ezért.

The English words but, however, therefore, and so do not preserve these distinctions consistently. Choose the relation first, then the Hungarian marker.

Viszont: place two alternatives in opposition

Viszont is natural when two topics or properties are compared on a parallel dimension. Clause-initial placement introduces the contrasting proposition; placement after a topic highlights that topic as the contrasting member.

A belvárosi lakás kisebb, viszont közelebb van az egyetemhez.

The downtown apartment is smaller, but it is closer to the university.

A hétfői időpont nekem megfelel. Zsófi viszont csak kedden ér rá.

Monday works for me. Zsófi, however, is only free on Tuesday.

In the second example, Zsófi is the contrasted topic. Hungarian does not require viszont to be the first word of its sentence. That flexibility lets information structure show exactly which participant stands in opposition.

Azonban: textual counterweight

Azonban often corresponds to “however” and is especially comfortable in formal exposition, reports, and careful speech. It can oppose expectations rather than compare two neatly parallel participants.

A kísérlet első eredményei biztatók. A résztvevők száma azonban túl alacsony a biztos következtetéshez.

The experiment's initial results are encouraging. The number of participants, however, is too low for a firm conclusion. (formal/academic)

Az útvonal rövidebbnek tűnt, azonban a felújítások miatt lassabban haladtunk.

The route seemed shorter; however, the roadworks made our progress slower.

Both initial azonban and post-topic a résztvevők száma azonban are standard. Do not force it into the rigid second-sentence position of English however.

Ugyanakkor: literal time or balanced perspective

The transparent temporal use of ugyanakkor is “at the same time.” From that relation comes a discourse use: two claims hold simultaneously and must be weighed together.

Ugyanakkor érkeztünk a rendelőbe, mégis külön sorszámot kaptunk.

We arrived at the clinic at the same time, yet we received separate queue numbers.

A digitális ügyintézés gyorsabb. Ugyanakkor azoknak is megoldást kell kínálni, akik nem használnak okostelefont.

Digital administration is faster. At the same time, a solution must also be offered to those who do not use a smartphone.

The first is literal simultaneity. The second prevents a one-sided conclusion by adding a valid counterconsideration. Ugyanakkor need not mean that the two abstract propositions occur at exactly the same clock time.

Use viszont for an opposition between parallel alternatives, azonban for a textual counterexpectation—often in formal writing—and ugyanakkor when both perspectives remain valid and must be balanced.

Ezért and emiatt: two ways to point back to a cause

Ezért consists of proximal ez “this” plus the causal-final case ending -ért. The suffix has one invariant vowel shape; there is no back-vowel alternative. Distal azért means “for that reason/because of that” and has several additional pragmatic uses covered elsewhere.

A műhelyben elromlott a fűtés, ezért a mai foglalkozást átköltöztetjük a könyvtárba.

The heating in the workshop broke down, so we are moving today's session to the library.

The broken heating motivates the resulting decision. Ezért behaves as a clause constituent and can answer Miért? “Why?” It can receive focus: EZÉRT költöztetjük át, “This is why we are moving it.”

Emiatt is the conventional proximal demonstrative form corresponding to the postposition miatt “because of.” Compare a noun phrase a vihar miatt “because of the storm” with the anaphoric proform emiatt “because of this.” Standard Hungarian does not build that standalone proform as two words ez miatt.

Több helyen felszakadt az útburkolat; emiatt ezen a szakaszon harmincas sebességkorlátozás van.

The road surface has broken up in several places; because of this, there is a thirty-kilometer-per-hour speed limit on this stretch.

Ezért readily presents a consequence as following from the earlier situation. Emiatt more explicitly packages that situation as the reason. In many contexts both are possible, with a difference in perspective rather than truth.

Nem kaptam meg az értesítést, ezért nem tudtam időben válaszolni.

I didn't receive the notification, so I couldn't reply in time.

Nem kaptam meg az értesítést; emiatt maradt el a válaszom.

I didn't receive the notification; that is why my reply was missing.

The first advances naturally from cause to result. The second makes the missing notification the explicit explanation for the absent reply.

Tehát: infer rather than merely cause

Tehát is a lexicalized, uninflected marker. It instructs the listener to accept the next proposition as a conclusion, summary, or inference from the preceding material. The evidence need not physically cause the conclusion.

A kulcsa nincs a fogason, a kabátja sincs itt, tehát valószínűleg már elindult.

His key isn't on the hook and his coat isn't here, so he has probably already left.

The missing objects are evidence for the inference; they do not cause the departure. Ezért már elindult would instead suggest that their absence somehow motivated him to leave, which is not the intended reasoning.

In a presentation, tehát can mark a conclusion; in conversation, it can also resume or press a line of reasoning. Repeated turn-initial tehát may sound insistent. That discourse extension does not change its spelling or inflection.

A két mérés ugyanazt az eltérést mutatja. Tehát nem egyszeri hibáról van szó.

Both measurements show the same deviation. Therefore, this is not a one-off error. (academic)

Eszerint: a conclusion dependent on this account

Eszerint is the proximal demonstrative counterpart of szerint “according to”: compare a jelentés szerint “according to the report” and eszerint “according to this/on this account.” The conventional form is one word, with a single s between the vowels. Its distal partner is aszerint.

A tájékoztató szerint hétvégén is nyitva tartanak. Eszerint vasárnap is átvehetjük a csomagot.

According to the notice, they are open on weekends too. So according to this, we can collect the parcel on Sunday as well.

Eszerint mégsem kell új kérelmet benyújtanunk?

So, according to this, we don't have to submit a new application after all?

The question invites confirmation of an interpretation. Tehát would state or test the logical conclusion more directly; eszerint keeps the conclusion explicitly anchored to the account just heard or read.

Separate cause from evidence. Use ezért/emiatt when the earlier situation is a reason, tehát when it licenses an inference, and eszerint when the conclusion remains conditional on the current account or source.

Clause position is part of the form

These markers can stand before the topic or after it. The post-topic position is especially useful with viszont, azonban, and tehát.

A külső burkolat viszont sértetlen maradt.

The outer casing, by contrast, remained undamaged.

A második mérés tehát megerősítette az első eredményt.

The second measurement therefore confirmed the first result.

In both, the initial noun phrase is the established topic. Initial Viszont a külső burkolat... or Tehát a második mérés... would more strongly present the entire proposition as the discourse move. Punctuation follows the clause structure; Hungarian does not automatically place a comma after every initial marker.

Segmentation exercise

ez-ért: proximal demonstrative + invariant causal-final -ért.
az-ért: distal demonstrative + the same ending.
e-miatt / a-miatt: conventional proximal/distal pronominal forms related to miatt; written as one word.
e-szerint / a-szerint: conventional proximal/distal forms related to szerint; written as one word.
ugyan-akkor: recognizable elements “same” + “then/time,” lexicalized both temporally and contrastively.
viszont, azonban, tehát: learn as fixed uninflected markers rather than productive segmentations.

This architecture explains why emiatt and eszerint are not built by placing free ez before a postposition. It also shows that harmony does not create alternative forms of -ért.

Common Mistakes

❌ Ez miatt zárták le a hátsó bejáratot.

Incorrect standalone demonstrative form: standard Hungarian uses the single word emiatt.

✅ Emiatt zárták le a hátsó bejáratot.

This is why they closed the rear entrance.

❌ Ez szerint a vonat húsz percet késik.

Incorrect pronominal form: ‘according to this’ is the single word eszerint.

✅ Eszerint a vonat húsz percet késik.

According to this, the train is twenty minutes late.

❌ Nem működött a beléptetőrendszer, mert kézzel ellenőrizték a jegyeket.

Incorrect causal direction for the intended message: mert makes the manual checks the cause of the system failure.

✅ Nem működött a beléptetőrendszer, ezért kézzel ellenőrizték a jegyeket.

The entry system wasn't working, so the tickets were checked manually.

⚠️ Az irodában nem égnek a lámpák, emiatt valószínűleg már bezártak.

Misleading for the intended inference: emiatt presents the dark office as a cause of closing rather than as evidence for a conclusion.

✅ Az irodában nem égnek a lámpák, tehát valószínűleg már bezártak.

The lights aren't on in the office, so they have probably already closed.
