Sequence and Addition Markers: Contrasts and Learner Traps

The closest Hungarian sequence and addition markers differ in what they ask the listener to infer. Először starts an ordered plan, while előbb compares times and elsőként identifies the first participant. Aztán moves a narrative forward, majd projects a later step, and utána explicitly locates something after a reference point. In addition, és, is, továbbá, ráadásul, and sőt range from plain coordination to scalar strengthening. Review the forms and usage pages for the core inventory; this page is a decision guide for the difficult edges.

Először, előbb, or elsőként?

Use először “first(ly)” to establish stage one in an ordered sequence. Use előbb “earlier/before” to compare the timing of events. Use elsőként “as the first person/item” when rank or participant order is central.

Először elolvassuk a szerződést, csak utána írjuk alá.

First we'll read the contract; only after that will we sign it.

Én értem ide előbb, de Dóra ment be elsőként.

I got here earlier, but Dóra went in first.

In the first example, először opens a procedure. In the second, előbb compares arrival times and elsőként selects Dóra from the possible entrants. English first can express all three, so translate the relationship rather than the isolated word.

Compare two readings created by information structure:

Először Júlia ismertette az eredményeket, aztán Gábor válaszolt a kérdésekre.

First Júlia presented the results, then Gábor answered the questions.

Júlia ismertette elsőként az eredményeket.

Júlia was the first to present the results.

The first orders two program stages. The second ranks Júlia among potential presenters. Strong focus on Júlia may add a correction: it was Júlia, not someone else.

Aztán, majd, or utána?

These three can all be translated as then, but they point differently.

MarkerCore contrastTypical setting
aztánadvance the story or sequence to the next relevant eventunmarked, especially frequent in conversation
majdplace an action later, often prospectively or after another planned stepunmarked; frequent in plans, promises, and deferred action
utánalocate an event after an explicit or recoverable reference eventunmarked temporal relation

Megittuk a kávét, aztán sokáig sétáltunk a rakparton.

We drank our coffee, then walked along the embankment for a long time.

Most befejezem a levelet, majd felhívlak.

I'll finish the letter now, and then I'll call you.

A vizsga után találkozunk; közvetlenül utána ráérek beszélgetni.

We'll meet after the exam; immediately afterward I'll have time to talk.

Majd is not a dedicated future tense marker, but it often supports a future or deferred reading. A bare Majd megcsinálom can reassure (“I'll do it”) or postpone evasively (“I'll get around to it”), depending on tone and history. Aztán more readily sounds like the narrator is stepping through events already conceptualized as a sequence.

💡
Choose aztán to advance a narrative, majd to project or defer a later action, and utána when “after that event” is the precise relation. English then hides all three choices.

Végül, utoljára, or végre?

Végül gives the final stage or eventual outcome. Utoljára means “for the last time/most recently” and identifies the last occurrence. Végre conveys that a desired or awaited event has at last happened, often with relief or impatience.

Három ajánlatot is megnéztünk, végül a helyi céget választottuk.

We considered three bids and eventually chose the local company.

Utoljára januárban beszéltem Emesével.

I last spoke with Emese in January.

Végre megérkezett az alkatrész, amire hetek óta várunk.

The part we've been waiting for for weeks has finally arrived.

Replacing végre with végül removes the overt relief and reframes arrival as the outcome of a sequence. Replacing utoljára with végül would no longer answer “When was the most recent occurrence?”

Plain addition: és, is, még, and továbbá

És coordinates two units without specifying that the second is surprising or stronger. Is follows the constituent it adds to a set. Még can introduce an additional amount or item. Továbbá (formal) organizes another parallel textual point.

Lili elkészítette a grafikákat, és Bence megírta a kísérőszöveget.

Lili prepared the graphics, and Bence wrote the accompanying text.

Bence is elkészítette a grafikákat.

Bence prepared the graphics too.

The position of is matters. Bence is adds Bence to a set of people; a grafikákat is would add the graphics to a set of things he prepared. This constituent scope differs from the wider textual function of továbbá.

A szerződés rögzíti a határidőt. Továbbá meghatározza az adatkezelés feltételeit.

The contract specifies the deadline. Furthermore, it defines the conditions for data processing. (formal)

In casual collaboration, és or a new sentence is usually enough. In a report, továbbá tells the reader that a new point of the same argumentative status is beginning.

Ráadásul or simple addition?

Use ráadásul when the extra fact reinforces an evaluation. It often translates as “on top of that,” “what is more,” or “moreover.” It need not be negative.

A lakás csendes, és van hozzá egy kis pince.

The apartment is quiet, and it comes with a small cellar.

A lakás csendes, ráadásul délutánonként besüt a nap a nappaliba.

The apartment is quiet, and what's more, the afternoon sun shines into the living room.

The first simply adds a feature. The second frames the sunlight as another reason for a favorable assessment. With bad news, the same marker accumulates burdens:

A járat késett, ráadásul a csatlakozó vonat sem várta meg az utasokat.

The service was delayed, and on top of that the connecting train did not wait for the passengers.

💡
Ráadásul is evaluative. If the speaker has no reason to present the second fact as an extra benefit, burden, or surprise, use plain coordination instead.

Ráadásul or sőt?

Both strengthen an argument, but they do so differently. Ráadásul contributes another relevant fact. Sőt moves upward on a scale, reverses a negative expectation, or replaces an initial description with a stronger one.

A feladat időigényes, ráadásul külön engedélyt is kell kérnünk hozzá.

The task is time-consuming, and in addition we need to request special permission for it.

A feladat nem lett egyszerűbb, sőt több új lépéssel bővült.

The task did not become simpler; on the contrary, several new steps were added.

Permission is an extra burden alongside time. More steps directly reverse the idea of becoming simpler; sőt instructs the listener to replace the weaker expectation.

Scalar force is contextual, not stored in individual adjectives. In jó, sőt kiváló, “excellent” outranks “good.” In an argument, an exact figure may outrank a vague claim because it provides stronger evidence.

Sokan támogatták a kezdeményezést, sőt a résztvevők több mint kilencven százaléka igennel szavazott.

Many people supported the initiative; indeed, more than ninety percent of the participants voted yes.

Paragraph placement and topic placement

At the start of a sentence, ráadásul or továbbá normally relates the new proposition to the preceding discourse. After a topic, it highlights how that topic contributes an additional fact.

A második terv ráadásul jóval kevesebb energiát igényel.

The second plan, moreover, requires considerably less energy.

The topic a második terv is already under discussion; ráadásul marks the predicate as an extra advantage. Initial Ráadásul a második terv... more readily presents the whole proposition as the added argument. Neither position is a word-for-word copy of English connector placement.

Decision tree

  1. Are you opening stage one of a plan? Use először.
  2. Are you comparing which event happened earlier? Use előbb. Are you ranking the first participant? Use elsőként.
  3. Are you advancing a story? Choose aztán. Projecting a later or deferred action? Choose majd. Pointing explicitly to “after that”? Choose utána.
  4. Are you giving the eventual outcome? Use végül. The most recent occurrence? Utoljára. Relief after waiting? Végre.
  5. Is the addition neutral and local? Use és or constituent-focused is. Is it a parallel point in formal writing? Consider továbbá.
  6. Is the new fact another evaluative reason? Use ráadásul. Is it stronger on the same scale or a reversal? Use sőt.

Diagnostic exercise

Choose the most precise marker.

  1. “Márta was the first person to answer”: először / elsőként.
  2. A promise about an action after lunch: majd / utoljára.
  3. The date of your most recent visit: végül / utoljára.
  4. Another parallel requirement in regulations: továbbá / sőt.
  5. “It wasn't merely warm; it was unbearably hot”: ráadásul / sőt.

Answers: (1) elsőként, because a participant is ranked. (2) majd, because the action is prospectively later. (3) utoljára, because this is the most recent occurrence. (4) továbbá (formal), because the point is parallel textual addition. (5) sőt, because the second description raises the temperature scale.

Common Mistakes

❌ Tamás első ért célba a versenyzők közül.

Incorrect: the ordinal adjective első cannot function as the required manner/rank adverb here.

✅ Tamás ért elsőként célba a versenyzők közül.

Tamás was the first of the competitors to reach the finish.

❌ Végül két éve jártam Pécsen.

Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘the last time’: végül presents an outcome, not the most recent occurrence.

✅ Utoljára két éve jártam Pécsen.

The last time I was in Pécs was two years ago.

❌ Én megyek is a szombati műhelyre.

Incorrect for the intended constituent addition: is must directly follow the added participant én.

✅ Én is megyek a szombati műhelyre.

I'm going to Saturday's workshop too.
