Hungarian sequence and addition markers tell the listener how to integrate one step or claim with what came before. Először, aztán, végül build a progression; továbbá, ráadásul, sőt add material with increasingly specific textual or scalar force. They are uninflected, but several preserve recognizable Hungarian derivational patterns. Their position matters because a marker can organize a whole paragraph, a clause, or one highlighted constituent. For the simpler architecture of és and other coordinators, see coordination forms.

The markers do not carry tense. Past, present, future, and imperative meanings come from the surrounding verbs and situation.
Recognizable formation—and lexicalized forms
Először contains elő “front/first” and the multiplicative suffix -szor/-szer/-ször, also seen in háromszor “three times” and ötször “five times.” The rounded front vowel ő in elő selects -ször. Although its internal shape is transparent, the discourse meaning “first(ly)” is conventional; do not freely attach the suffix to any adjective to manufacture a connector.

Végül is historically and synchronically relatable to vég “end” plus the harmonic adverb-forming ending -ul/-ül. The front-vowel noun selects -ül. Ráadásul relates to ráadás “addition, extra” plus back-vowel -ul. These words are now established lexical units, so their spelling and meaning must be learned as wholes.
A javítás végül kevesebbe került, mint amire számítottunk.
The repair eventually cost less than we had expected.
A szoba világos, ráadásul az erkélyről a folyóra látni.
The room is bright, and what's more, the balcony overlooks the river.
Továbbá is a fixed extension of tovább “farther/further,” with final long á. Aztán and sőt should be treated as lexicalized markers rather than segmented by beginners. Their accents are not optional: aztán, sőt, továbbá.
Sequence across events, instructions, and paragraphs
The basic progression is először ... aztán ... végül .... A clause can contain all three, or each marker can open a separate sentence or paragraph.
Először összekeverjük a lisztet a sóval. Aztán hozzáadjuk a vizet. Végül tíz percig gyúrjuk a tésztát.
First we mix the flour with the salt. Then we add the water. Finally we knead the dough for ten minutes.
At paragraph scale, the marker tells the reader that the author is moving through an ordered plan. It does not have to describe clock time: an essay can say először before the first reason and végül before a conclusion.
Először a költségeket vizsgáljuk meg, aztán a környezeti hatásokat.
First we will examine the costs, then the environmental effects.
Hungarian normally does not require a comma immediately after these clause-initial adverbs: Először megnézzük..., not automatically Először, megnézzük.... Punctuation depends on the larger sentence, not on an English rule that inserts a comma after every introductory connector.
Addition: parallel, evaluative, or scalar
Továbbá adds a parallel item to an organized account. It is particularly natural in reports, regulations, minutes, and formal correspondence.
Továbbá kérjük, hogy a jelentkezéshez csatolja a nyelvvizsga-bizonyítvány másolatát.
In addition, please attach a copy of your language certificate to the application. (formal)
Ráadásul does more than append another fact. It presents that fact as an extra reason to strengthen the current positive or negative assessment.
Lekéstük a buszt, ráadásul az eső is eleredt.
We missed the bus, and on top of that it started raining.
The additive particle is attaches to az eső “the rain” as the added participant, while ráadásul frames the whole event as an extra burden. Their functions cooperate rather than duplicate each other.
Sőt raises the scale or corrects the first description upward: not merely X, but a stronger Y. Within one sentence, the comma normally stands before sőt.
A bemutató érthető volt, sőt még a bonyolult részleteket is könnyű volt követni.
The presentation was clear; in fact, even the complicated details were easy to follow.
Elfogadta a javaslatot, sőt rögtön vállalta a megvalósítást is.
She accepted the proposal and even immediately volunteered to implement it.
The second formulation is stronger than the first. Simple és would merely coordinate two facts; sőt tells the listener to revise the rhetorical scale upward.
Clause position and scope
A clause-initial marker normally organizes the entire proposition:
Ráadásul a tulajdonos azonnal válaszolt minden kérdésünkre.
Moreover, the owner answered all our questions immediately.
After a topic, the marker can make that topic the contrasting carrier of the additional property:
A tulajdonos ráadásul azonnal válaszolt minden kérdésünkre.
The owner, moreover, answered all our questions immediately.
The truth conditions are close, but the second version keeps a tulajdonos as the established topic. English speakers who memorize only “moreover” often ignore this information-structure difference.
Segmentation exercise
Identify the stable marker and any productive piece you recognize.
- elő-ször: relational stem elő
- rounded-front multiplicative -ször; lexical sequence meaning “first.”
- vég-ül: noun vég
- front -ül; lexical “finally/in the end.”
- ráadás-ul: noun ráadás
- back -ul; “in addition/on top of that.”
- tovább-á: lexicalized extension of tovább; learn the final long á.
- aztán, sőt: do not force a productive modern segmentation.
The exercise explains spelling and recognition. It does not mean that every connector is assembled online from free morphemes.
Common Mistakes
❌ Első felhívjuk az ügyfelet, aztán elküldjük az ajánlatot.
Incorrect: első is an adjective or ordinal form; the clause needs the sequence adverb először.
✅ Először felhívjuk az ügyfelet, aztán elküldjük az ajánlatot.
First we'll call the client, then we'll send the quote.
❌ A szálloda közel van, ráadásül reggelit is adnak.
Incorrect vowel harmony: ráadás takes the back-vowel ending -ul.
✅ A szálloda közel van, ráadásul reggelit is adnak.
The hotel is nearby, and what's more, they serve breakfast.
❌ Sőt is eljött a teljes kutatócsoport.
Incorrect additive structure: sőt cannot simply take the place of constituent-focused is.

In fact, even the entire research group came.
❌ Végűl a kisebb lakást választottuk.
Incorrect vowel length: the established marker is végül, with short ü.
