Sequence and Addition Markers: Meanings and Usage | Hungarian Grammar

Sequence and addition markers do more than label the first, next, or extra fact. They create expectations about how a text or conversation will develop. Először opens an ordered path, aztán moves the narrative forward, and végül closes it or presents an eventual outcome. Továbbá adds a parallel formal point, ráadásul adds evaluative weight, and sőt replaces a description with a stronger one. Their core shapes are introduced on the forms page; this page shows what speakers accomplish with them.

Giving instructions: planned progression

In a recipe, route, setup guide, or explanation of procedure, először ... aztán ... végül ... makes the steps easy to recover. Each marker points to the stage's place in a plan rather than carrying its own tense.

Először kapcsold ki a nyomtatót, aztán húzd ki a kábelt!

First switch off the printer, then unplug the cable! (informal)

Végül indítsa újra a programot, és ellenőrizze, eltűnt-e a hiba!

Finally, restart the program and check whether the error has disappeared! (formal)

The first marker creates an expectation that a later step will follow. If there is only one action, először can still be natural when the speaker means “do this before we consider anything else.”

Először nézzük meg, valóban ugyanarról a fájlról beszélünk-e!

First, let's check whether we're actually talking about the same file.

This example manages the discussion, not clock time alone. It temporarily postpones proposed solutions until the participants establish a shared reference.

Telling a story: aztán moves the floor forward

Aztán is especially common in everyday narrative. It marks the next relevant event and can be repeated as a speaker builds a story. In a listener's question, És aztán? means “And then?” and returns the floor to the storyteller.

Bezártuk a boltot, aztán még beültünk egy teára a sarkon.

We closed the shop, and then we stopped for tea on the corner.

– Találtam egy régi dobozt a padláson. – És aztán? – Kiderült, hogy tele van nagyapám leveleivel.

– I found an old box in the attic. – And then? – It turned out to be full of my grandfather's letters.

In the dialogue, aztán organizes turns: it signals interest and requests continuation. A bare question about time would not perform the same conversational job.

There is also an (informal) warning or insistence use, often with distinctive stress: Aztán időben gyere haza! It evokes what must happen next but functions pragmatically as a reminder.

Aztán el ne felejtsd felhívni a nagymamádat!

And don't you forget to call your grandmother! (informal, emphatic reminder)

This construction is not a neutral substitute for every English then. The negative imperative and tone create insistence.

Végül: final step or eventual outcome

In instructions, végül introduces the last planned step. In stories and decisions, it often means “eventually/in the end”: several alternatives, delays, or difficulties preceded the outcome, even if they are not all stated.

Sokáig kerestünk megfelelő helyszínt, végül egy régi malmot béreltünk ki.

We searched for a suitable venue for a long time and eventually rented an old mill.

Végül csak ketten maradtunk, ezért taxival mentünk haza.

In the end, only two of us remained, so we went home by taxi.

English finally can express impatience (“Finally!”). Hungarian végre is normally the marker for relief that a delayed desired event has at last occurred; végül neutrally identifies the outcome. That close contrast is developed in the decision page, but learners should already avoid attaching English emotional force automatically to végül.

Use végül when you are locating an outcome at the end of a process. Use an emotional marker such as végre only when relief, impatience, or satisfaction at the delay is part of the message.

Továbbá: another parallel point in an organized text

Továbbá (formal) adds an item at the same organizational level. It is at home in applications, reports, meeting summaries, academic prose, and carefully structured presentations. It often opens a new sentence or list item.

A pályázónak szakmai önéletrajzot kell benyújtania. Továbbá csatolnia kell két ajánlólevelet.

The applicant must submit a professional résumé. In addition, they must attach two letters of recommendation. (formal)

Az átszervezés csökkentette a várakozási időt; továbbá javult a betegek tájékoztatása is.

The reorganization reduced waiting time; in addition, the information provided to patients improved. (formal)

In casual conversation, ordinary és, meg (informal), még, or a new sentence is often less ceremonious. That is a register choice, not a claim that továbbá becomes ungrammatical in speech.

Ráadásul: an extra reason that changes the evaluation

Ráadásul tells the listener that the added fact reinforces why the situation is especially good, bad, surprising, difficult, or attractive. The evaluation may be positive or negative.

A bicikli könnyű, ráadásul összecsukva a vonaton is elfér.

The bicycle is light, and what's more, when folded it fits on the train.

Egész délután állt a forgalom, ráadásul a telefonom is lemerült.

Traffic was at a standstill all afternoon, and on top of that my phone died.

The second fact is not merely item number two. It makes the speaker's evaluation stronger. Ráadásul can therefore reveal stance even when no evaluative adjective is present.

Sőt: strengthen, exceed, or correct upward

With sőt, the second expression outranks the first on a contextually relevant scale. It may move from a moderate adjective to a stronger one, from a general statement to an exceptional detail, or from an initial approximation to a more accurate claim.

A koncert jó volt, sőt az utolsó két szám egészen lenyűgöző volt.

The concert was good; in fact, the last two songs were absolutely stunning.

Nem csökkent az érdeklődés, sőt idén több jegy fogyott, mint tavaly.

Interest did not decline; on the contrary, more tickets were sold this year than last year.

In the first, “stunning” is stronger than “good.” In the second, the prior expectation is not merely denied but reversed. English in fact, indeed, even, and on the contrary can all correspond to sőt in different contexts; no one gloss defines its use.

Before using sőt, name the scale: good → excellent, many → even more, not decreasing → increasing. If you cannot identify a stronger second point, simple addition is probably better.

Concrete addition and abstract argumentation

The same markers work with physical events and abstract reasons because they organize how information accumulates.

Először megjavították a tetőt, aztán kicserélték az összes ablakot.

First they repaired the roof, then they replaced all the windows.

Az új rendszer átláthatóbb; ráadásul kevesebb személyes adatot kell tárolni.

The new system is more transparent; moreover, less personal data needs to be stored.

The roof example describes temporal succession. The system example offers a second argument and marks it as added evaluative support.

Formal and informal comparison

Továbbá megállapítható, hogy az intézkedés nem növelte a működési költségeket.

Furthermore, it can be established that the measure did not increase operating costs. (formal/academic)

És még csak nem is került többe az egész.

And the whole thing didn't even cost more. (informal)

Both add favorable evidence. The first packages it as another point in an impersonal argument. The second uses és, még, and sem in a conversational evaluation. Translating both as furthermore would erase their register and interactional design.

A short planning dialogue

– Először hívjuk fel a helyszínt. – Rendben. És aztán? – Aztán véglegesítjük a névsort. Ráadásul a meghívókat is el kell küldenünk. – Jó, végül pedig egyeztetek a zenekarral.

– First let's call the venue. – All right. And then? – Then we'll finalize the guest list. What's more, we also need to send the invitations. – Fine, and finally I'll coordinate with the band.

És aztán? yields the turn. Ráadásul inserts an extra obligation that increases the workload. Végül closes the plan. The markers shape the shared task and conversational sequence simultaneously.

Common Mistakes

Incorrect: the established sequence adverb először does not take this dative ending.

Incorrect clause structure: továbbá does not introduce a subordinate hogy-clause by itself.

In addition, every participant needs a separate entry card. (formal)

❌ A tanfolyam hasznos volt, sőt is sok új embert ismertem meg.

Incorrect particle combination: sőt cannot be followed by is in this position.

✅ A tanfolyam hasznos volt, sőt sok új embert is megismertem.

The course was useful; in fact, I also met many new people.

❌ A vendégház olcsó, ráadásül közel van az állomáshoz.

Incorrect harmony: the marker is ráadásul, with back-vowel -ul.

✅ A vendégház olcsó, ráadásul közel van az állomáshoz.

The guesthouse is inexpensive and, moreover, close to the station.
