B1 Learner Path

This page organizes existing lessons into a B1 route; it does not reteach their full paradigms. B1 assumes completion of the A2 learner path, or equivalent control: fully accented spelling, vowel harmony, definite and indefinite conjugation in the present and past, ordinary future reference, all three spatial triples, possessive endings, comparison, commands, and polite everyday interaction.

At B1, accuracy must survive longer clauses. Stem alternation, harmony, object agreement, governed case, focus, and prefix position continue to interact, so the route recycles them inside increasingly connected speech.

Entry diagnostic: connect events without losing morphology

Without notes, record a two-minute account of a recent problem and its solution. Include why it happened, what you had to do, a person who helped, one definite object, and one destination and source. Then transcribe the account with every accent and mark each verb prefix, object, and case ending.

You are ready if A2 endings remain stable while you connect events. If prefix placement or object agreement collapses, repair the relevant A2 milestone first; B1 assumes productive retrieval.

Week 1: learn principal parts, not imaginary regular stems

Study vowel-dropping and vowel-lengthening stems, v-stems and other allomorphy, and the major noun stem classes. Then connect them to verb stem classes and principal parts.

Build small lexical families: út–utak–úton, bokor–bokrok–bokorban, ló–lovak–lóval, and tesz–tettem–tegyen. The alternation and the suffix solve different problems. In lovakkal, the stem supplies lov-, plurality supplies -ak, and the instrumental ending assimilates to -kal.

There is no one-rule shortcut for every stem class. Record principal parts with the word and test them before several suffixes; reliable lexical families matter more than a recited chart.

Milestone 1

Take fifteen unfamiliar prompts drawn from studied stem classes. Say the plural, one possessed form, and one case form for each noun; for each verb, produce present, past, and imperative forms. After a delay, use eight altered forms in a short account rather than reciting them in isolation.

Week 2: control prefix separation across clause types

Review neutral attachment, then study prefix-placement contrasts and word order with verbal prefixes. Practice one lexical verb in four frames: neutral completion, negation, a narrow-focus answer, and an imperative or infinitive chain.

The prefix is not permanently attached punctuation. Compare neutral elküldtem, negative nem küldtem el, focused tegnap küldtem el, and modal el tudom küldeni.

Milestone 2

Transform ten neutral sentences into a negative, a focus answer, and a command or modal construction. Read them aloud with appropriate preverbal stress.

Week 3: give an infinitive its own understood subject

Study personal infinitive forms, their usage, and prefix placement in infinitive chains. With impersonal predicates such as kell, lehet, szabad, the person who must or may act can appear in the dative, while the infinitive carries a person ending: nekem el kell indulnom.

Hungarian divides work between the optional dative experiencer and the personal infinitive. In neutral el kell indulnunk, the lexical prefix stands separately before kell; compare the distinct scope of nem kell elindulnunk and nem szabad elindulnunk.

Milestone 3

Write six household or workplace rules for different actors, then state them aloud without the written dative pronoun where person marking makes the actor recoverable. Include kell, lehet, szabad, a negative, and two prefixed infinitives.

Retrieval checkpoint 1: stem → prefix → infinitive

After two days without notes, combine an irregular stem, prefix, actor, and modal. Build a sentence, then negate or focus it. Mark stem allomorphy, infinitive person, and prefix position independently; vary elmennem with behozniuk, megtenned, and felhívnunk.

Week 4: build complement and adverbial clauses

Study complement and adverbial clause forms, then their usage. Begin with hogy complements after speech, thought, knowledge, and intention. Add temporal amikor/mire/amíg, reason mert, condition ha, and concession bár/pedig only with tense and case forms you already control.

Hungarian reported speech does not mechanically backshift tense as English often does. Present elkészül can remain oriented to a still-relevant Friday; choose time reference from meaning.

Milestone 4

Combine eight pairs of simple sentences with a connector that expresses the intended relation. Then retell a scheduling problem with a hogy complement, condition, reason, temporal boundary, and concession. Check conjugation and prefix placement inside every clause separately.

Week 5: attach relative clauses to identifiable nouns

Study relative pronoun forms, then relative and correlative clause structure. Use aki for people and ami/amely according to the antecedent and register described on those pages. Inflect the relative pronoun for its role inside the relative clause, not for the case of the head noun.

In the first example, kolléga is the main-clause subject, but akivel is instrumental because the embedded verb is beszél valakivel. English who/that hides this case decision.

Milestone 5

Describe four people and four objects through relative clauses; at least four pronouns must carry a non-nominative case. Then transcribe clause boundaries from audio using intonation and finite verbs.

Week 6: make focus answer the current question

Review topic structure and immediately preverbal focus, then study the B1 focus contrasts. Start from a spoken question, not from shuffled word cards. The answer constituent normally occupies the preverbal focus position and receives strong stress; a verbal prefix follows the finite verb.

Hungarian coordinates prosody, preverbal position, and prefix separation. Diagnose the discourse question and stress: not every preverbal phrase is exhaustively focused.

Milestone 6

Record five neutral statements. For each, answer who, when, where, or what with a minimally changed focused sentence. A partner or your later self should be able to recover the intended question from the stress and word order alone.

Retrieval checkpoint 2: clause boundary → focus → reference

Divide a one-minute news or interview clip into clauses; mark focus, relative pronouns, and separated prefixes. Reconstruct it first from annotations, then from six keywords the next day.

Week 7: learn case government with the predicate

Study transitivity and case government, then revisit the B1 contrasts for the dative, instrumental, delative, and ablative. Learn vár valamire, örül valaminek, beszél valamiről valakivel, fél valamitől, and segít valakinek as predicate-plus-frame units.

No rule maps every English preposition to a Hungarian case. Learn lexical government with the predicate and contrast near-synonyms.

Milestone 7

Create twelve predicate-frame cards and use each in a question, answer, and relative clause. At least six cards must contrast an English preposition that maps to different Hungarian cases. Review them by producing the complement from the predicate, not by naming the case from a list.

Week 8: sustain a narrative across genres

Use the formal request email, short news report, job interview, rental advertisement, and Hungarian folk tale. They test politeness, compact information, reported events, participant tracking, and narrative results.

For each text, listen without reading, shadow a paragraph, then transcribe it with full accents. Identify every clause boundary, understood subject, definite object, governed case, focus, and prefix. The next day, retell the content for a different audience: conversational for a friend, neutral for a news summary, or (formal) for an email.

Final B1 productive milestone

Tell a coherent six- to eight-minute story about an application, journey, housing search, or unexpected problem. Establish background, narrate at least eight completed events, report what someone said, explain one obligation with a personal infinitive, identify a person through a case-marked relative pronoun, and focus one corrective contrast. Finish by stating the consequence and your present evaluation.

Then write a fully accented 190–230-word version for a specified audience. Pass only if participants and chronology remain clear and no error pattern recurs in stems, harmony, agreement, case, clause linkage, focus, or prefix position.
