Infinitive Chains and Verbal Prefix Placement: Meanings and Usage

Prefix placement in a Hungarian infinitive chain tells the listener how the message is organized. Neutral meg fogjuk beszélni presents a future discussion as one event. Nem fogjuk megbeszélni negates it. Holnap fogjuk megbeszélni, nem ma corrects its timing. The prefix belongs lexically to beszélni in all three, but its position reflects the finite clause's polarity and focus.

This page organizes the system by communicative purpose. The formal layouts appear on the forms page; scope ambiguities and lexical exceptions are compared on the contrasts page. Unless labeled otherwise, all patterns are neutral modern standard Hungarian.

Announcing a future plan with fog

Hungarian uses fog + infinitive when a future interpretation benefits from explicit marking. In a neutral affirmative clause, a prefix belonging to the infinitive normally climbs before finite fog.

Este fel fogom hívni a nagymamámat.

I'll call my grandmother this evening.

A jövő héten meg fogjuk beszélni a részleteket.

We'll discuss the details next week.

Finite fogom/fogjuk carries subject and definite-object agreement. The infinitive is not itself “future”; the carrier and context locate it in time. With an indefinite object, the finite form changes:

Útközben venni fogok egy üveg vizet.

I'll buy a bottle of water on the way.

With no prefix available to climb, unprefixed venni itself occupies the neutral preverbal position before fogok. Hungarian often uses present tense for scheduled or naturally bounded future events, so Holnap felhívom is also normal. fog is useful when prediction, commitment, or explicit futurity matters; it is not required in every translation of English will.

Reporting intention with akar

With akar, neutral climbing packages the intended action as the content of the subject's will.

Be akarom fejezni a tanfolyamot.

I want to finish the course.

A gyerekek ki akarnak menni a kertbe.

The children want to go out into the garden.

Object agreement crosses the infinitive boundary. a tanfolyamot triggers definite akarom; the intransitive motion predicate selects indefinite akarnak. When one person wants someone else to act, an infinitive chain is not enough: Hungarian normally uses azt akarja, hogy + imperative–subjunctive.

A vezető azt akarja, hogy péntekig fejezzük be a munkát.

The manager wants us to finish the work by Friday.

That finite subordinate clause preserves the change of actor. English want us to finish conceals this structural switch.

Expressing ability with tud

Personal tud locates skill or practical capacity in its subject. A climbed prefix is natural in an unmarked affirmative answer.

Ki tudom nyitni az ablakot, csak egy kicsit szorul.

I can open the window; it is just a little stiff.

A szerelők holnap meg tudják javítani a liftet.

The technicians can repair the lift tomorrow.

Under negation, the prefix remains with the lexical infinitive:

Egyedül nem tudom kinyitni ezt az üveget.

I can't open this jar by myself.

Alkatrész nélkül nem tudják megjavítani a liftet.

They can't repair the lift without a replacement part.

English keeps open and repair in the same position in both polarities. Hungarian lets nem occupy the preverbal operator position, which removes the environment for neutral climbing.

Presenting necessity with kell

Impersonal kell has a different participant structure. A specific actor is dative when overt, and a possessive-like ending on the infinitive can identify that actor. Neutral prefix climbing still applies.

Délután vissza kell vinnem a bérautót.

I have to return the rental car this afternoon.

A jelentkezőknek ki kell tölteniük ezt az űrlapot.

Applicants have to fill out this form.

In the (formal) second example, jelentkezőknek and kitölteniük refer to the same plural participant. The prefix climbs, but participant morphology stays on the infinitive. With generic instructions, the plain infinitive is normal:

Belépés előtt ki kell tölteni az űrlapot.

The form must be completed before entry.

Negating kell removes necessity and blocks climbing:

Nem kell ma visszavinnem az autót.

I don't have to return the car today.

That sentence permits returning it; it merely says there is no obligation. For prohibition, use nem szabad visszavinnem or a negative imperative, depending meaning.

💡
In a kell chain, ask two separate questions: where does the lexical prefix go, and who must act? Vissza kell vinnem answers them independently with climbed vissza- and first-person vinnem.

Framing versus correcting

A time or object placed early in the clause can be a topic, merely setting the scene. In that case, neutral climbing remains. The same expression can be narrow focus when it explicitly excludes alternatives; then it immediately precedes the finite carrier and blocks climbing.

Holnap el fogom olvasni a jelentést.

Tomorrow I'll read the report.

Holnap fogom elolvasni a jelentést, nem ma este.

I'll read the report tomorrow, not this evening.

Ezt a jelentést el akarom olvasni.

As for this report, I want to read it.

Csak ezt a jelentést akarom elolvasni.

I want to read only this report.

The first member of each pair establishes a frame and retains climbing. The second narrows the alternatives and keeps the prefix attached to the infinitive. Spoken stress reinforces the distinction.

Contrasting the finite desire with the embedded action

Negation normally scopes over the finite modal: nem akarom elolvasni means that the speaker lacks the desire to read through the text. To contrast two possible embedded actions, Hungarian can front an intact infinitive before akar.

Nem akarom kidobni a régi széket.

I don't want to throw away the old chair.

Nem kidobni akarom a régi széket, hanem megjavítani.

I don't want to throw away the old chair; I want to repair it.

The second is corrective and prosodically marked, but fully standard. The prefix ki- stays attached inside focused kidobni. Do not imitate it unless an explicit alternative is being corrected.

Multiple infinitives and layered meaning

Multiple infinitives let Hungarian combine future, ability, and lexical action. Neutral long-distance climbing can move the lowest verb's prefix across an intervening infinitive.

Jövőre már meg fogom tudni érteni a szakmai előadásokat.

Next year I'll already be able to understand the specialist lectures.

Ezt a rendszert mindenkinek meg kell tanulnia használni.

Everyone has to learn to use this system.

In the first sentence, meg- belongs to érteni in the result-oriented megérteni “come to understand/understand successfully,” but appears before finite fogom. Definite fogom reflects a szakmai előadásokat. In the second, tanulnia carries the actor licensed by kell, while használni has the same controlled actor.

Negation reveals the layers:

Háttérismeret nélkül nem fogom tudni megérteni az előadást.

Without background knowledge, I won't be able to understand the lecture.

Nem kell megtanulnod használni minden funkciót.

You don't have to learn to use every feature.

Heavy chains can burden the listener. In (formal) technical prose they efficiently preserve dependencies; in conversation, two clauses may be clearer: Elmagyarázom még egyszer, és akkor meg fogod érteni “I'll explain it once more, and then you'll understand.”

A short planning dialogue

Nóra: Mikor fogod átnézni a pályázatot?

Nóra: When will you review the application?

Gábor: Holnap délelőtt át fogom nézni.

Gábor: I'll review it tomorrow morning.

Nóra: Ma már nem tudod átnézni?

Nóra: Can't you review it today?

Gábor: Nem, előbb be kell fejeznem a költségvetést.

Gábor: No, I have to finish the budget first.

The wh-focused mikor and negative nem keep át- on átnézni. Gábor's neutral answer permits át fogom nézni, and be kell fejeznem combines climbed prefix with a personal infinitive.

Informal and formal packaging

Conversation often tolerates compact chains and omits recoverable actors:

Ezt még meg kell próbálnom kijavítani.

I still have to try to fix this.

This is (informal or neutral). Formal instructions often make participants and scope explicit:

A pályázónak igazolnia kell, hogy képes lesz határidőre befejezni a projektet.

The applicant must demonstrate that they will be able to complete the project by the deadline.

This (formal) version avoids one enormous chain by using hogy and képes lesz. Clarity, not maximal compression, is the goal of formal prose.

💡
A grammatically possible chain is not automatically good style. When three or more nonfinite predicates obscure who does what, keep the participant relations but split the message into a subordinate clause.

Common Mistakes

❌ Holnap fogom elolvasni a jelentést.

Misleading for a neutral time frame — this order makes holnap contrastive focus.

✅ Holnap reggel el fogom olvasni a jelentést.

Tomorrow morning I'll read the report.

❌ Nem meg akarom nézni a lakást.

Incorrect for ordinary ‘I don't want to see it’ — negation must precede the finite modal.

✅ Nem akarom megnézni a lakást.

I don't want to see the apartment.

❌ A diákoknak meg kell érteni a szabályt.

Incorrect in careful standard Hungarian with the explicit plural actor — the licensed infinitive needs -niük.

✅ A diákoknak meg kell érteniük a szabályt.

The students have to understand the rule.

❌ El fogok olvasni a szerződést.

Incorrect object agreement — a szerződést requires definite fogom.

✅ El fogom olvasni a szerződést.

I will read the contract.

Key Takeaways

  • Neutral climbing packages a prefixed infinitive with fog, akar, tud, or kell as one event chain.
  • Ordinary nem, wh-focus, and contrastive focus keep the prefix attached to the lexical infinitive.
  • A topic can precede the clause without blocking climbing; focus does block it.
  • Personal finite carriers encode subject and object reference, while impersonal predicates can preserve the actor on a personal infinitive.
  • Multiple infinitives preserve layered control relations, but splitting an overloaded chain is often better style.
